I have spoken to Sheffield Air Traffic. They are pedantic that they must have a
copy of their approach procedure FAX signed by the pilot, and in their hands
before clearance can be given.
Accordingly, I have attached a copy of the FAX to be signed and posted, or Faxed
back to them in time for departure. There is really nothing difficult, or contrived
about joining them. Indeed the tower people are really welcoming, but
Sheffield itself is still emerging from its' days as a communist state, so you
vill comply if you have not visited before.
The alternative is to join us at Sandtoft at 12.30.
Happy days. Bryan

I deleted the information about the June fly in in Tenn. Where is it, and
what commercial airports are near? It looks like we will need to come
commercial unless someone in FL has a couple of seats open. We are anxious to
go,
sounds like a great time!
Jim and Lynne Puglise, N283MG
Hi All,
John Lawton here, aka Europa A-245. My brother and I are hosting the first
annual Europa Fly-In at our field (TN89, Atlanta Sectional, north side, shown as
"Matthew's). The field is located near Whitwell, TN, about 20 miles due north
of Chattanooga. The Fly-In will be on June 5-6, 2004. Although this is an
informal gathering, we are planning a cookout for Saturday night, rain or shine,
and I would imagine that Saturday and part of Sunday will be spent swapping
stories and building tricks with other Europaphiles.
The closest commercial airport is Chattanooga (CHA), although it's cheaper to
fly into Nashville (BNA) and rent a car. We're about 2 hours drive Southeast
from Nashville.
Depending on which airport you'd like to fly into:
From Chattanooga, take I-24 north towards Nashville to Exit 155 (Jasper,
TN/Hwy 28). Go North on Hwy 28 18.1 miles and turn right onto Condra Switch. There
will be a sign and balloons at the turn. Proceed 3/4ths of a mile and turn
right onto Condra Road. You will see the airport on the right. Approximate drive
time is 30 minutes.
From Nashville, take I-24 south to Exit 155 (Jasper, TN/Hwy 28) Go North on
Hwy 28 18.1 miles and turn left on Condra Switch. There will be a sign and
ballons at the turn. Proceed 3/4ths of a mile and turn right on Condra Road. You
will see the airport on the right. Approximate drive time is 2 hours.
If anybody would like to see an overhead picture of our field check out
www.airnav.com. Click on "Airports" and enter TN89 as the identifier. Other contact
information, long and lat, etc., is also available here.
If anybody needs a list of nearby hotels and motels contact me off list and
I'll e-mail a list to you. We will have a courtesy van available for those
staying in motels. We have on field showers and toilet facilities for those who
wish to camp.
For those flying in, we monitor 123.5 Mhz. Please call us on approach to
announce your arrival as we do run a glider tow operation from the field and
depending on the weather I might be towing gliders also. There is also fairly
intense hang glider activity in the area, so keep a sharp lookout for slow moving
traffic in the vacinity. Contact Chattanooga approach on 119.2 Mhz or 125.1 Mhz
for vectoring to the field.
We hope to see everyone there! If anyone has any other questions I can be
reached via e-mail or on my mobile at 423-240-0064.

Hi Ferg,
I'm just now working on installing my mass balance tower and getting the stabs
correctly aligned. My problem is that even before installing the tower, with the
weights contacting the pitch push rod, I only get 12.8 deg. of trailing edge
up pitch. When I trial fit the tower, I get 9.6 deg trailing edge up and 6.5
deg trailing edge down. These measurements are when using the incidence setting
block. Should I use something else? I must be doing something wrong in my measurements.
Anyone who wants to throw in on this is welcome.
Thanks,

However, just before fitting on the fuselage top, I took a last-minute
test of stab travel and found that in intervening months the range of travel
had reduced for some reason - and I got but 2.8deg nosedown and 11.6deg
Noseup travel! The trim travel works well, but the stab itself has reduced
.
As well, I found the counterweight travel did not allow full noseup
travel, and I had not cut the trim slots long enough to permit full travel.
I lengthened the slots 1/8inch and the slot problem receded.
It was obvious I had failed to centre the TP18A swivelling rear end of
the counterweight arm to allow the arm to descend slightly into a happier
area, so I removed the two AN-3 bolts at the back and swivelled the TP18A
four turns shorter [1/8"]. Too much!
So I calculated the ratios of TP18A turns (32thread) to front end travel
of the counterweight and degrees of stab travel. At 2" +/- between aft bolts
and 30" length of applicable c/w arm I figured one turn [1/32" travel] of
TP18A equalled 1/2" change of countertweight position, and THAT equalled
2deg of stab position.
I'm wondering if anyone else ran into this condition, and whether my
calcs gibe with another's. If all is well, I will increase the travel of
the
big pitch push rod to permit a greater range of stab travel [12deg to -4deg
in the book].
Any comments gratefully received.
Cheers, Ferg

Ok, I took a look at Steve D's site and saw the photos on how he measured, took
out the incidence block and re-measured. I'm getting 12.8 up and 6.9 down now
without having the mass balance weights in play. Will go for the 14 deg that
the manual asks for then will start on the tower and such. Thanks Ferg for the
tip on adjusting the TP18.

I need to get in touch with them regarding the replacement of Warp Drive blades

You can find photo's of with incidence block and without. Without you have to do
the math. What I finally did was, with the elevator in neutral and the plane
level, I adjusted the block under the level to read Zero. I then pitched up and
down to get the correct readings. Some adjustments were required and my counter
balance arm is not level when the elevator is in neutral. I have a slight
weight high pitch.

I read a message less than a week ago from one of us, stating that
the fuel pump (a FACET part no. 40108 in the Aircraft Spruce catalog) needed
to be mount6ed at 45deg to the horizontal. I had read that somewhere else
but cannot find either reference and beg to know if this is so.
The pumps go in on conformation of same, or otherwise.

I had the same issues, maybe not to your extent. What I did was to take
and cut away some of the front flange tip of the offending rib and then
formed the remaining horizontal section to fit in closely to the profiile
of the vert stab leading edge. Then used a layup of fiberglass in that
area as there wasn't a flange area there for redux to bond to. From what I
can remember I removed some of the nose section and about 3/4 - 1" along
each side.

Anyone who wants to throw in on this is welcome.
Dan,
I would suggest you not worry at first about UP and DOWN deflections.
The important thing is to first obtain the correct total movement of the
tailplane which is 18 degrees. (13 Up and 5 down eventually)
Assuming no "T" bar is yet installed for the trim (remove it if it is),
if you cannot obtain the total 18 degrees of movement, the most likely
reason should be that the distance between your Up and Down Stops for
the mass balance weight is insufficient. After you have
adjusted/altered the stops to obtain the total deflection of 18
degrees, you can then screw the adjuster on the end of the lower support
tube for the mass balance weight in or out to obtain the correct
apportionment Up and Down. This adjuster only alters the position of
the tailplane relative to the mass balance weight and in so doing,
alters both deflections. Whatever it adds to one, it subtracts from the
other. The sum of the two deflections should always remain 18 degrees.
When you measure the individual deflections, first establish the level
position by accurately aligning the tailplane with the fuselage fairing.
Up and Down measurements are then relative to this level position. Your
incidence block on the tailplane will be fine. If you have a digital
level or protractor (I used my Warp Drive Propeller protractor), when
you are holding the tailplane aligned with the fairing, place your level
on the board and note the reading. (lets say it is X degrees). Now
your Up reading should be X+13 and Down X-5
Hope this helps.

I had to do some extra work because of lack of travel. For the bottom stop
I had to dispense with what was detailed in the manual. Circular dowel
covered with rubber is what I believe it was. I made a new stop out of
a bolt and covered with a Delrin tube that I turned down. I think it is
only about a half to a third diameter of what was originally called for.
for the top stop I selectively milled away the section of the tip of the
weight that contacted the roof first of the fuselage.

According to the instructions with my Facet pump Ferg, the 45deg angle
is correct. I.e. when mounted on a vertical surface, turn it 45 left or
right. The plane of the mounting surface does not have to be at 45deg.

I have not seen an answer to this one, so I will jump in. IT is really
easy.
The problem is the bulkhead , so cut the rib and just make it fit. I had to
trim the front of mine a little. You are just putting in rib to stiffen up
the skin and it is not too critical.
I did try to get a good bond with the "green goop from Hell" so the ribs
could do there job. It is a tricky job to get them in and clecoes in place
and not smear all the redux off.

Faxed back to them in time for departure. There is really nothing difficult,
or contrived about joining them. Indeed the tower people are really
welcoming, but Sheffield itself is still emerging from its' days as a
communist state, so you vill comply if you have not visited before.

Hi Brian
You cannot send attachments to the forum address. You will need to use our
individual addresses. As indicated by my last e-mail Paddy and I are both
interested. Please send your fax attachment to nigelcharles@tiscali.co.uk
and paddyclarke@lineone.net.
Regards
Nigel

Hi Ferg
> I read a message less than a week ago from one of us, stating that
the fuel pump (a FACET part no. 40108 in the Aircraft Spruce catalog) needed
to be mount6ed at 45deg to the horizontal. I had read that somewhere else
but cannot find either reference and beg to know if this is so.<
Both my Facet pumps are mounted on their side horizontally (ie the flange
face vertical with both inlet and outlet at the same level). The system
works fine. I think it is more of a problem should the pumps be mounted
above fuel level where they have to suck fuel upwards. This should not be an
issue in most Europa installations.

>Does anyone out in Europa land have contact info for NSI other than their
Arlington, WA address and phone? I have tried to contact them to no avail.
The tenant of a building adjacent to NSI's informed me that they are no
longer there. I need to get in touch with them regarding the replacement of
Warp Drive blades for their hub. <
Sorry cannot be of any help but this doesn't surprise me. Both I and David
Hunter (UK contact for NSI) have had very poor customer liason from this
company in the past. The product is good but don't expect good customer
support (even if you can get in touch with them).
