Hi,
The Europa Trailer hitch coupling is 50mm, a 1 7/8'' ball is required.
Cheers,

Europaphiles,
Does anyone out there know the size of the ball hitch required for the
Europa factory trailer?
Looks like I will be bonding the top on N914XL this Monday, 31 May 2004.
Thanks.

On a classic Europa Monowheel, after fitting the full speed kit, I
measured a ~ 5 - 6 kt improvement in speed for the same RPM. Not as much
as that originally claimed by Ivan Shaw (9kts?) but nevertheless
worthwhile because it gives a permanent improvement in either cruise
speed or fuel consumption. It also smartens up the flap brackets and
outrigger mechanisms.

Another advantage of speed kit is that it helps to keep clean the outrigger mechanisms.

Hi All
I've recently had fairings on and off my trigear with the 914 /airmaster combo
and I get at least 8-9 kts more in the cruise, giving me - 125-130 kts at 5000
rpm 29 in.boost 67 % power setting 20L ph fuel flow, altitude 3500 , OAT 22
C - so they work for me.

Dear Jim,
When I did the flight testing for the speed kit on the mono-wheel, I was careful
to conduct the two comparison flights (each with at least 3 speed runs each
way) within an hour of each other to minimise errors. The aircraft weight was
also the same at each take-off and the runs were conducted at full throttle and
5500rpm. Having corrected for temperature and altitude the speeds were converted
to TAS. A full 9 knots was gained with the fairings in place, so your
2 - 3 knots gain may indicate a measurement issue?
The Tri-gear showed a 10 kt improvement using the same techniques.
Regards
Andy

We have the XS mono wheel with a 914. After installing the speed fairings we picked
up 2 or 3 knots at best.
I thank that maby the tri -gear may show more improvement than the mono-wheel
What about it, tri gear owners??????????

Good Morning all from West Virginia (USA)=85.great Memorial Day,
I am interested in trailers for the Europas.
I know that there are two basic models (wheel footprint) of Europas (mono
and tri) and even a few conventional gear model out there=85=85my questions are
what kind of trailers does everyone have to transport your Europas?
1. Are there commercial, manufactured trailers? (Which manufacture)
2. Did you build one yourself, either completely or partial?
3 Are there any plans out there that are available to build a trailer for
an Europa (or sailplane)?
4. If you use a manufactured trailer, what key components or modifications
are needed to make it work for a Europa?
5. Are there any covered trailers available?
6. Can you use a sailplane (glider) trailer from Cobra (or others brands)
for an Europa?
7. Are there any horror stories out there where you tried to tow an Europa
and it didn=92t work=85.I am only interested in the corrections of how and why
it didn=92t work, and what you did to the trailer to make sure it didn=92t
happen again.
8. If you had to do it all over again, what would you do different in your
trailer area?
The reason I am inquisitive about the trailer details is that I am getting
ready to purchase a trailer (or two) for transporting some =BE scale (24 feet
long fuselage, 24 foot wingspan) static display models (P51 & P40 & Corsair)
for Civil Air Patrol. If I can purchase or build (or partially build from a
basic manufactured trailer) a trailer that fits ALL these needs, I would
like to hear your input and advise.
Any feedback, good or bad is what I am asking for. Any trailer details,
schematics, measurements, etc. would be great. What are you all doing?
Thanks,
Rick Heis

Good day All,
Here in the US the 1 7/8" ball hitch (Class 1) is rated at a maximum 200 lb
tongue weight and maximum load of 2000 lbs. That's the weight of your airplane
plus the weight of the trailer plus any other items carried on the trailer.
The 2" ball hitch (Class 2) is rated at 300 lb tongue weight and maximum of
3500 lb load.
So when you are checking out trailers, find out how much they weigh, then add
the plane weight at MTOW, add any boxes or fuel cans that you will mount to
the trailer for misc. stuff, and keep a margin below the hitches maximum
pulling capacity.
Also find out what the maximum towing capacity of the vehicle that is going
to pull your trailer/plane.

Rick, I'll be using my 18' construction trailer to transport my
tri-gear. It has a wood plank floor and very short rails. As a dual
axel it was priced at around $1100. US. You can pay more, but won't
have the versatility of this kind of trailer.

On the tri-gear 'lookalike' (i.e. proper taildragger) there is a 9 knt speed
improvement (126 knt to 135 knt) with leg fairings alone. But the leg is
rectangular in section and offers a "flat plate" of about a third of a
square foot, so a significant improvement would be inevitable.
A further 8 knt speed improvement (135 to 143 knt) occurs with mainwheel
fairings similar to the Europa product, but closer in appearance to those
shown at:
http://www.teamrocketaircraft.com/TeamRocketAircraftcgi/hazel.exe
(let me know if you want some; I have moulds).
Flap hinge fairings aren't fitted (I await to be convinced that they are
beneficial) and some intersection fairings in the acute angle between legs
and wheels may net a little more.
Still trying to get to 150 knts! Will an extra 10% hp from cold air get me
there?
Duncan McF.
