Hi Hat Droppers,
As the weather of late has been much better than forecasted, I am suggesting Wolverhampton
for tomorrow. Might have to skirt the odd shower. Venue is good
as is the grub. Might see Kev if he is about.
If the weather is unflyable and nobody can make it, can someone else choose the
next venue. I can't make Tuesday or Wednesday and then I am off on Dave Buzz's
Scandinavian Trip.
Hope to see some of you tomorrow. Best wishes,
William

This is entirely 'hear say' but I thought the sensor was a standard bit
out of the RS Components catalogue. AFE, what was RD Aviation, at
Oxford should be able to tell you they used to supply them.

Does anyone have a contact for Benwick FM 1053 fuel flow computer spares
in the UK? In particular I would like to change the fuel flow sensor
unit. Is it a standard item, or is it commissioned specially for
Benwick? Many thanks, William

Don't do it!
Put a proper flow sensor on; one that has far less risk of constriction and
blockage. ie a Flowscan sensor.

Hi, Paul!
Any of the motorcycle specific oils will work in the Rotax application -
Castrol, Valvoline, etc. Just hit up your local shop (not usually a
Harley dealer - they run some much heavier weight oil) and get some good
stuff. Motul is also an excellent brand.
From what I've read, using auto oils can cause problems in the Rotax as
well as the motorcycles with the friction modifiers causing the clutches
to slip.
A synthetic oil would also be best for the 914 due to the turbo bearings
being cooked with heat after shutdown.
Best,
Chris

Check with Rotax on the recommended oils. There has been a change on some
of the recommended 4 cycle motorcycle oils. I believe that Valvoline Dura
Blend is still recommended.

Bob,
You are correct, in the new service bulletin Motul and Castrol have been
removed from the list of approved oils. I have a note into Lockwood to ask
there opinion, if anything comes back I'll post it.

I totally agree with Duncan. The Floscan is far superior. Paddy found that
it was impossible to satisfy the fuel flow test with the restriction of the
Benwick sender. If you take one apart you will be horrified to see how small
the aperture is. Conversely the Floscan causes minimal flow restriction. If
my memory is correct the pressure loss @15gall/hr and the impellor stalled
is only 0.15psi. As it is suitable for much higher fuel flows restriction
should not be an issue. In terms of accuracy Paddy and I are both recording
figures of less than 0.1% which is well within their quoted accuracy of 2%.

Paul - not sure about the version on John Cliff's site, but if you
take a look in the "calculations" folder of the Europa Club CD (sent
to you when you joined last year), you'll find several flavours of
this calculation, all of which require only 3 tracks. If you haven't
flown exact cardinal tracks (ie N S E W) then the one to use is Doug
Gray's which simply requires 3 widely-separated tracks.

Rowland

Paul,
I located the Shell Advance Website
(http://www.shell.com/home/Framework?siteId=advance-en). There is a
"Shell Advance in your country" selection. I went there and they did
not list any country in North America (Canada, Mexico or U.S.A.). Just
out of curiosity, I queried them under their "Contact us" section. If
I receive a reply, I will post it.
I sure would like some good suggestions on what to put in the oil tank
of my 914 when the time comes.

Brian,
If you get your eye down close to the fuselage flange and look down the
length of the fuselage, you can make out the line fairly well. You
should be able to see the line on the tail flange this way as well.
The line on the angle up from fuselage to tail is a lot harder to see
but is there.
Personally, I left a radius at the firewall juncture and on the
interior angle from the fuselage to the angled portion. I don't like
the potential for stress risers that a sharp angle might leave.
Good building,
Bob Borger

Good Day All,
For those that have recently finished their aircraft painting......what did
you do about the gel coat that covers the wings and fuselage? Sand it off?
Roughen it only?
Not near that point but inquiring minds, you know.
Also, is anyone else having to wait months to receive parts from Europa? I'm
going on thirteen weeks for the electric flap actuator for the Mod 68. It
seems a bit long.

Many thanks for the replies, Pete, Duncan and Nigel.
I was unaware of this knowledge about Benwick, but I must say I have never
seen a drop in fuel pressure (sample point down stream of Benwick) at full
throttle (mine's the 912). Where can I buy a Flowscan sensor and are they
directly interchangeable, or do I have to throw the Benwick unit away?

Mike Hi!

My painting is now complete and the following actions concerned Gel-coat.
I had originally applied Polyfiber Super prime to Wings and Fuselage after
sanding back Gel coat to flat/roughened condition. When the same parts
arrived at Paint Shop (Composite Aircraft/Glider Repair and Paint Company)
they were processed again with most of the Super prime and gel-coat being
removed prior to the primer they use. Everything was primed and flattened
back and then painted on 2 pack Acrylic, in fact BMW base white. This makes
matching in at any point later much easier it seems.
The bottom half of Fuselage was painted 'flat' Silver in exactly the same
way but lacquered in some way to ensure consistency of 'silver'.
All this done with the Europa held on a 'spit' and turned as required!
The reason to attack gel-coat was to get a good paint 'key' and also to
remove any residue from original gel-coat process.
Interestingly enough the guy who owns and worked on Aircraft has more than
20 years experience of composite products and prefers that owners of Kit
built Aircraft just send them as completed without any action around
preparing for painting. His point being that he cannot rely on the process
or sometimes the products used. Saying that.... He has one or two Europa's
that were prepared in Super prime and other processes and have turned out
well over past 5 years and endured.
I filled and primed all my Control surfaces and they were processed at this
same Company and turned out very well. They were completed 4 years ago and
stored and I've seen no problems other than me dropping Tailplane and
creating a very unpleasant 'ding'. No repaired!
I'm pleased with the finish of mine. Others may judge otherwise.
I have fitted the shoulder width Mod that entails cutting out and gluing in
a replacement interior bottom Panel to each Door. I was made to sand back
the Doors skins until NO trace of sheen from Gel coat was present. The 2
interior skins took a full day to get to that condition and will be painted
using an epoxy coating/paint as used in Grob Aircraft. It comes as a two
pack and will be 'rolled' on. Extremely hard finish. The whole interior was
sanded and finished in this way too even though it will have full interior
fitment.
Hope that makes sense.
Regarding Europa supply chain.
If you haven't done so E-mail Ray Bedford at Europa: ray@europa-aircraft.com
He has always sorted things out for me. If necessary ask where it comes from
or what it is and try another Supplier in US.
