--> Europa-List message posted by: "nigel charles" <nigelcharles@tiscali.co.uk>
I will be holding another Fly In/BBQ at my airstrip (Lydeway Field) this year.
The event will be on the same setup as last year (ie free fly in, free BBQ and
drink in exchange for taking a few of my neighbours on short local flights).
The date for the event is Sat 17th July (weekend after Kemble) with a possible
backup day of the Sunday.
For those unfamiliar the strip is 790m grass (10/28 ) which makes it very easy
for those not familiar with farm strips. The surface is firm and smooth making
it useable for trigears as well as monowheels. There are a few trees/hedges to
watch out for and I do ask that visitors respect the noise abatement procedures
to avoid irritating nearby residents. Further details will be included in
the briefing sheet provided.
I will be limiting this to 10 aircraft due to the congestion having to backtrack
during departure/arrivals. Anyone who is interested in attending this event
should send an e-mail to nigelcharles@tiscali.co.uk.

Paul,
Thanks for the brief write-up on your flying experience so far.
> I am wondering what to do about my WEB site (

a trip diary?

If it isn't too much bother, I'd like very much to hear about your test
period plans and flying. The trip diary would be nice as well. These
things serve us folks without the resources of our own web site as a
great source of motivation and inspiration. I spend a couple evenings
a week checking out other folks building and operating sites. Yours is
at the top of my Europa Builders Bookmarks.
BTW - Thanks to Steve "El Roto" for reinstating your site. And I
wonder about Steve Dunsmuir and N59XS who hasn't updated since November
2003?
I have thought about trying to post my builders diary out there
somewhere, but it is HUGE. Y2002 is 29MB, Y2003 is 108MB, Q1-Y2004 is
143MB and Q2-Y2004 is 118MB. If anyone out there has any
ideas/suggestions, I'd be happy to discuss them.
Good building and fantastic flying,

It's amazing how much you can get done in a long weekend.
Top on 2 weeks ago. This weekend------Sternpost in, rudder installed and working,
baggage bay bulkhead glassed in (what a miserable job glassing the back of
that). Still a little more to trim off of the port side on the sternpost to get
a full 30 deg's travel (figuring the finish of the rudder). Wound up taking
about 3/8" off the port side to get full travel. May have to take off approx 1/8"
more to get enough travel to include finishing with no rubbing.

Hi ALL,

Hi Mike,
This subject came up a while back and according to Neville, it isn't gel
coat, but rather expancel and resin used to fill the weave of the cloth.

I guess this is because you have lots of hi resolution pictures taking up 1,
2 or even three mB each. The resolution on a computer screen is such that a
cut down file size of about 150k is at the best resolution that can be
displayed. All bigger and better resolutions are a waste and just waste
bandwidth when accessing the site.
Pictures should be made smaller in file size before uploading to your web
site.
Comments from me - without a broadband connection. (ISDN only). However even
with a Broadband connection 3mB files take longer than you want to wait !
Especially if there are 50 to arrive !
Just my two worth !

Hi! Peter.
May I suggest you contact Watts Aviation Tyres.01594 847290 and speak to the
Technical Guy. (Male not Female)
and remind him of my problems and the 11 x 4.00-5 tube being slightly too
large in sectional diameter.
By accident they fixed me up with a King Tire 11 x 3.5 -5 tube with the
bent valve tube. I think this is a more suitable fit than the Cheng Shin
original tube.
Also they have supplied me with a harder compound main gear tyre which is
better wearing than the Cheng Shin originals but of slightly square section
instead of round section.

it would be. It fly's hands off and seems to stall straight ahead, although
I haven't tried it with the flaps / gear down yet and based on Graham
Singletons mishap I have decided to fit some stall strips. The only
adjustment I might have to make is to the C of G, it seems further forward
than my calculations would suggest. . Take offs are quick, I operate off a
5000' runway and I can be at pattern altitude by the time I get to the end
of the runway. I haven't tried it with the prop set to takeoff pitch and
kicking in the turbo charger, I suspect that it would climb like a scolded
cat. The local grass strip is too wet at the moment so I have been working
of pavement. Its a bit of a handful and I don't fly if there is more than
20 degrees of cross wind component. I will have to work up to cross wind
landings very slowly.

good for 135 knots TAS without the speed kit on. I took it up to 10,000
feet to check the turbo charger waste gate adjustments to check to ensure it
would hold 34". A very rough speed check indicated a 160 knot TAS.

some one, Benwick? used a sensor that had a slot as restrictor in the flow
sensor. That one did cause a problem I remember. The width of the slot was
much less than the width of a circle of the same area, hence more prone to
blocking.

I have used rubbing alcohol with great success for removing Redux prior to it hardening.
The best results are after an hour or two of curing, at this stage
the Redux is gooey and the rubbing alcohol works well if you keep the cloth well
saturated. Works a treat.

The manual forbids us strictly to use acetone ( 'at all cost, even the apours

Does somebody know a way to remove the very thin remnants of Redux from the

I tried vinegar and that worked, but very hard. I'm sure there must be an

On a Few of the RV's the owners are putting NACA vents just back of the
trailing edge of the wings to help exhaust the cabin air and relieve
cabin pressure. That may not be a place for positive air flow.

Dave,
Thanks for the information. I considered the exhaust gas problem, but
assumed that it would not be a problem on the lower starboard side of
the fuselage, due to the prop wash lifting it upward. I also assumed
that the lower fuselage, being fairly flat would give a good airflow
through the vent. Anyone have any experience with vent inlets in these
positions? Would it be possible for someone, with a running Europa, to
make a few CO2 measurements in the areas I'm talking about? Any
assistance would be greatly appreciated...

Dear Lister,

Europa-List Usage Guidelines
******************************************************************************
The following details the official Usage Guidelines for the Europa-List.
You are encouraged to read it carefully, and to abide by the rules therein.
Failure to use the Europa-List in the manner described below may result
in the removal of the subscribers from the List.
Europa-List Policy Statement
The purpose of the Europa-List is to provide a forum of discussion for
things related to this particular discussion group. The List's goals
are to serve as an information resource to its members; to deliver
high-quality content; to provide moral support; to foster camaraderie
among its members; and to support safe operation. Reaching these goals
requires the participation and cooperation of each and every member of
the List. To this end, the following guidelines have been established:
- Please keep all posts related to the List at some level. Do not submit
posts concerning computer viruses, urban legends, random humor, long
lost buddies' phone numbers, etc. etc.
- THINK carefully before you write. Ask yourself if your post will be
relevant to everyone. If you have to wonder about that, DON'T send it.
- Remember that your post will be included for posterity in an archive
that is growing in size at an extraordinary rate. Try to be concise and
terse in your posts. Avoid overly wordy and lengthy posts and
responses.
- Keep your signature brief. Please include your name, email address,
aircraft type/tail number, and geographic location. A short line
about where you are in the building process is also nice. Avoid
bulky signatures with character graphics; they consume unnecessary
space in the archive.
- DON'T post requests to the List for information when that info is
easily obtainable from other widely available sources. Consult the
web page or FAQ first.
- If you want to respond to a post, DO keep the "Subject:" line of
your response the same as that of the original post. This makes it
easy to find threads in the archive.
- When responding, NEVER quote the *entire* original post in your
response. DO use lines from the original post to help "tune in" the
reader to the topic at hand, but be selective. The impact that
quoting the entire original post has on the size of the archive
can not be overstated!
- When the poster asks you to respond to him/her personally, DO NOT
then go ahead and reply to the List. Be aware that clicking the
"reply" button on your mail package does not necessarily send your
response to the original poster. You might have to actively address
your response with the original poster's email address.
- DO NOT use the List to respond to a post unless you have something
to add that is relevant and has a broad appeal. "Way to go!", "I
agree", and "Congratulations" are all responses that are better sent
to the original poster directly, rather than to the List at large.
- When responding to others' posts, avoid the feeling that you need to
comment on every last point in their posts, unless you can truly
contribute something valuable.
- Feel free to disagree with other viewpoints, BUT keep your tone
polite and respectful. Don't make snide comments, personally attack
other listers, or take the moral high ground on an obviously
controversial issue. This will only cause a pointless debate that
will hurt feelings, waste bandwidth and resolve nothing.
