The common fiberglass "repair kits" are polyester resin, and besides dissolving
polystyrene (blue) foam, polyester has other annoying characteristics. Home Depot
sells epoxy laminating resin as a pint each of resin and hardener. As a
50/50 mix, the stuff is simple to work with.

Dear fellow Europeans !
After having crossed the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific
Ocean in my quest to circumnavigate the world in a
westerly direction - I am now getting ready to fly
N81EU from Central Asia to Germany.
Plans are to leave on a commercial airliner from my new
home - Los Angeles - tonight and reactivate the plane
in Ulan Bataar before flying her across the endless
steppes of Central Asia some time towards the end of
next week.
Please follow the events on my website:
www.thomas.scherer.com
Right after recovering from the parties in Bonn,
Germany, I hope to do the Atlantic ocean one more time
and be in the US in time for Oshkosh 2004.
I would love to hear from folks on the way - or who
might want to join in across the Atlantic.
Happy Landings !

There will be a Builders Forum at OSH. It is scheduled for Tuesday, 7/27 from
4:00 pm to 5:15 pm in pavillion 02. They assigned the date and time - I asked
for later in the week but this is what I got!
There is no set agenda, just questions, answers, discussions etc. regarding building
and flying Europas. An opportunity to meet other builders and put faces
to names.
Hope to see you there.

Cliff & Steve,
You can say that again about them not being the cheapest. I just got my quote
from the info I gave them at Sun-N-Fun.
Use: Pleasure & Business (I told them pleasure only?)
Pilots: Me, Age 51, Private Pilot, Total Time 225hrs, Tailwheel 25hrs, Time
in Type 0hrs
Training: To be approved by underwriter
Aircraft: 2004 Europa (Boy! Are they optimistic), 2 seat, Engine - Rotax912S
Based at: California, Hangered @ Public airport, hard surface 3000ft.
Agreed Value: $70,000
Deductibles: $0 in Motion, $0 Not in Motion
Liability: $1,000,000 Combined Single Limit subject to $100,000 per passenger
Medical Payments Including Crew: $10,000 (Not enough!)
Annual Premium: $2,735
Does this seem a bit much? The medical payments would be $5k per person. That
wouldn't even cover a broken bone in the ER! They may treat you nice.....and
I don't like the lowest bidder either.....but there should be something
better. Or I think that I'll give them a call to see what can be adjusted to bring
the rate down. Like the zero deductible.....

While at Home Depot you can pick up one of the foam house insulation panels.
Not the white Styrene that have the large granules but the blue or pink rigid
stuff.
Another means of separating the results from the mold would be to wrap the
mold in SaranWrap (plastic food wrap). You can then reuse the mold.

Most builders have probably got bin bags full of blue foam - the remains
of the blocks of foam from which all the flying surface cores came. If
there is someone close you might be able to 'borrow' some. If not ACS
sell it, don't know if Europa could supply a small amount - you're not
going to need big bits.
We made the ducts and the housings for the eyeball vents separately and
then joined them with tapes of glass cloth and resin but your summary of
blue foam shape, cover with glass/resin (2 layers is plenty) allow to
set then get rid of the foam is essentially correct. If you decide to go
this way and you wan't more details of what we did, drop me a line of list.
Regards
Paul

I got "building" insurance while the kit was being assembled. When I went to
fly, I got liability insurance for 1M and no hull. They required 10 hours
duel in type before I would be covered. Premium $775 mono or trigear.
the underwriter is Global. Worked through Falcon (EAA)

Matt,
I tried to have a look at your pictures on the link you put in your e-mail.
Did you know you can put the link right to the photo, or at the very least
into the directory you put them in. I did a search using your name to no
avail. So, if you could repost with the link that would be great. If a link
leads to a search, its not much good.

I don't think Matt posted any pictures or links. Paul has some photos in the Gallery.
http://forum.okhuijsen.org/modules.php?set_albumName=album57&op=modload&name=gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php
( I got to get those URLs down in size)
The Gallery has its own search engine, so when you're in the Gallery type "vents"
in the search window and they'll come up.
chat later,

Good to hear from you. I am in Ulan Bator - the plane
is in surpisingfly good shape. Engine sprang to life
rite away.
I need some Europa apparel for the landing in Germany -
there is supposedly some media attention. Maybe arrange
with my webmaster, Dietmar.
Be well !
