Hi All,
When you fit a Subaru powerplant to a Europa [whoever makes the conversion kit],
because of the extra weight over and above that of a Rotax, the increased polar
inertia totally messes up a very fine handling aeroplane.
Look at the AAIB records to see that most of the Europa's involved in ''engine
failure incidents'' have been powered by Subaru. There does not seem to be any
problem with the Subaru part of the equation, only the add on systems.
Cheers,
Nev.

I had that problem with the standard SAF drain valve. Solution was to
replace the O-ring; it seems the slightest amount of damage, scuffing or wear
makes them leak.
I also carry spare O-rings (Viton).

I'm considering getting a trailer for my XS mono.
I understand that later models are greatly superior to the original. Should I be
looking for any particular extras/additions?
What's the going rate for a second hand one just now.
I think the factory price is a little over the top.

Subject: | RE: Subaru engines |
--> Europa-List message posted by: "GLENN CROWDER" <gcrowder2@hotmail.com>
Hello all!
I have never posted to the list before, being somewhat of a list lurker
having never felt that
I had anything much positive to contribute. I have been flying a Subaru
EA81 powered Monowheel Classic since 1999 with slowly improving success. I
am the second owner, the plane being the first Europa completed in the US
and had one of the first NSI (claimed 108 hp) firewall forward units. The
plane has been down at least 75% of the time I have had it since I cannot
seem to resist the urge to make changes and improvements! I have now made
most of the XS mods, and have spent a lot of time making cooling system and
engine upgrades which I feel were necessary to get performance to the level
I thought was appropriate for this plane. The performance with the original
NSI conversion was not good enough flying in Denver Colorado at 5280 msl. I
am 220 lbs and my instuctor is 180 and typical hot summer day density
altitudes are close to 8000 ft! I was getting about 130 mph top speed and
about 650 fpm climb, 350 with passenger.
After one particularly "interesting" downwind uphill takeoff on a hot day
with my instructor aboard, I decided I needed more power and had the
original NSI version EA81 modified by Ram Performance in Ohio
(Ramengines.com). There is a picture of my engine on his site. He used a
distributor for
his in house testing, but I am using the original NSI dual electronic
ignition, which has been flawless. Ron at Ram Performance claims 137 hp,
and does have his own dyno, but all I can go by is performance. Performance
numbers are greatly improved from the previous engine and I have been very
pleased. Climb rate went to 1100 fpm solo and top speed went up to 150 mph
(GPS @ 7000' msl). Since installing this engine about a year ago the
biggest problem I have had is finding an appropriate propeller to match the
higher engine performance. The Warp Drive propeller blades just don't seem
to allow much higher speeds than about 150 mph, not having enough blade area
or twist. I tried a Warnke 2 bladed prop that got 1300 fpm climb solo and a
top speed of 160 mph but created a bad prop resonance that could only be
fixed by staying with a 3 bladed prop (like the Warp Drive).
I am just now installing a Catto 3 bladed composite custom unit that I've
waited on 5 months that I hope will make a big improvement. I'm also
installing the speed fairing kit that hopefully should get 5 mph and
starting on a wheel fairing around the monowheel that should clean up
the underside a bit. I am still waiting for a roller rocker kit from Ram
that could provide another pony
or two - Ron claims 5 hp. I can provide more information and performance
numbers and post pictures if anyone is interested.

Hello All,
As a result of reading the recent postings in respect of seating, I
emailed Oregon Aero to enquire if they manufacture seats specifically
for a Europa.
FYI their reply is below.

Hello Kingsley,
Unfortunately we have not manufactured a cushion set for the Europa. We
do not have a working pattern. We have worked with a few Europa owners
to try and get a design, however none of them have stuck with the
program long enough to make a cushion set and send it for trial fit. So
we need some pictures and very detailed drawing to start this program
again. Also after we make a set of cushion, we need to trial fix them in
a Europa aircraft. Because you live so far away, it would not be
practical to send cushions back and forth to Australia for trial fit.
Hopefully we can find someone in the USA with a Europa, who is willing
to work with us.
I can only guess at what the price would be somewhere around $300.00 per
seat for un-upholstered cushions. If you wanted Fabric (cloth)
Upholstery the price range would be about $700.00 per seat. We also do
Custom Leather Upholstery; the price range would be about $950.00 per
seat. I will let you know if we ever manufacture a cushion set for a
Europa.

Craig,
I'm told that the unit without the remote mag sensor, is good for
only about 10 degrees. With the remote sensor its good for about 2
degrees.

I have a Dynion D10 in my "Wile E. Coyote" (A229 XS N229WC )
I also installed the external manometer with the OAT probe. It is worth the
money in my opinion. Works very well and easy to install and set up. (be
sure to wire up the RS232 serial port wires for your laptop computer)

Jim,
I was hoping the internal sensor was good enough without the added hastle of
mouting the external sensor. By looking over the install instructions it
seems somewhat complicated getting it lined up exactly in the same position
as that of the main unit.

I did not have a hard time putting the magnetometer unit under the pilots
seat in the outer knee space. I made a little platform with studs sticking
up that the unit just slides down over. The calibration procedure is much
easer to do than swinging the regular magnetic compass.
In flight the heading reading is very easy to use. I was flying today out to
the most Western tip of the "lower 48". Betty and I and a full load of sand
bags made the 2 hour round trip in bright sunshine. It was a beautiful day,
a very appreciated thing up here in this part of the world.
We are making plans to fly to Oshkosh in July. Hope to see many other
Europa people there. See you all at the Europa tent at the North end of the
display aria. Special parking is being set aside for all Europes that fly
in !!!!!

Hello All,
Airventure is getting closer and now is the time to really start thinking
about going. John has reserved a special parking area for Europas that will
hold up to 30 airplanes. He has also moved the Europa booth so it will
adjacent to the parking area.
This will allow us to have an excellent presence and also to keep an eye on
everyones airplane during the event. We will have some type of special sign
so event parking staff will know where the Europa's go.
John is also planning some special events that involve FOOD! like dinners
or breakfasts for all Europa builders and pilots.
But we NEED TO KNOW if you are planning on being at Airventure this year.
Double check the infomation at www.europa-usa.com
If you are not listed as attending and are going to be there please drop me
(Bob) an e-mail at info@galaxyhobby.com or reply to this one and we will add
you to the list. Best to contact me (not John) and I will keep the list up
to date every day.
If you are planning on flying - this is the year to do it!!! I would love
to have 20 Europa's show up. Cliff, Jerry & I are planning on leaving the
Seattle area on July 23rd and flying back basically along the I-90 route -
If anyone wants to join up with us along the way let me know that also.
Time to get cracking!!! I know there are more of you going then I have on
the list now so please let me know.
Happy building - or even better flying!!

My 2c worth :-
While I wont ever have this problem, if I did, I would be looking very
hard at a Rospeller Prop from Germany.
Barry Wrenford from Jindabyne in the Snowy Mountains of Australia had
the very same problem. See his solution at >>

All
OK, today was the day I measured the airspeed with the wheel pants
installed. I had them on before, but did not know the airspeed. I am sure I
got 4 MPH more today than last week with out the wheel pants installed. I
had the landing gear leg faring on each time, so the over all improvement
with the speed kit is well within the 5 MPH that has been reported earlier.
I thing the pants are well worth the trouble of installing. I do have a tip
for locating the mounting holes in the pants when you have the brackets
installed on the legs. I put four hi-intensity mag light bulbs taped on the
brackets shinning outward. (soldered wires to the bulbs and to clips on a
battery) Slid the fiberglass wheel pants over the brackets and used a
marking pen to mark the bright spot of light shining through the fiberglass.
