I have read with concern the comments surrounding Europa, its management and
continuing existence. I have also experienced some problems with some staff
and lack of supply of goods that have been paid for.
As an accountant I have tried to carry out research on the company's
financial activities eventually leading me to have candid discussions with
Keith Wilson directly in an attempt to possibly offer my professional
assistance to ensure all things remain well with the company, its product
and future existence.
Following those discussions I am convinced that there will be some changes
made by Keith to make big improvements to the way things happen at the
moment. However, he will need some time to make those changes. I think it
will be in all our interests not to make waves and be patient for a little
while longer. I firmly believe that the company will deliver and if you have
parted with cash for Europa products I believe you will (subject to supply)
receive them.
Obviously I cannot give any guarantees personally, but I am happy with
Keith's proposals and it takes a lot to make an accountant happy (building a
europa helps!)

I am told there is an up rated starter motor available that cures the
problem.
The motor is about an inch longer and turns the engine over faster
during the start.
I have not tried it myself.

Hi all,
I am a bit of a "list lurker" these days, however this email chain did
generate some concern. Like Peter I also had some very candid conversations
with Keith. My area of expertise is integrated software systems for
manufacturing and supply chain. During our conversations Keith acknowledged
that his current processes and systems were designed for a company handling
a fraction of the transactional volume it is trying to execute today.
I do know from my conversations that Keith is actively addressing the supply
chain and internal systems / process issues at Europa. While I can't
predict the timing or outcome of these changes I am confident that the
intent is there and that they are directionally correct.
Just my two cents worth.

Yes there is and I know that it ceratinly helps to spin the engine quicker.
However as it is longer I am told it cannot be used with Classic engine
mounts so this is an option for XS owners only.

Nigel et al,
I too had "kick-back" from time to time when very cold on my 912S.
I came to the same conclusion as you, Nigel, that starting on one mag. only
could slow the combustion just enough to avoid the problem.
So, about 18 months ago I installed a short link-wire to the appropriate
terminals on the back of my (Bendix-type) starter/mag switch to earth the
"A" mag. when the key is turned to the "start" position.
Since then I have had no "kick-backs" at all - even after standing in snow
and ice for 3 weeks on one occasion !
Well worth trying - IMHO.

Ron Jones. (XS G-RJWX. No. 359)

Hi Everyone,
Does anyone still use the white tape to cover the pip pins on the tail
plane? If so, does anyone know what it is and, where I can get some in the
UK? Obviously, I dont want to stick tape on that will lift the paint off
when removed. What did Europa recommend all those years ago?

Hi All & Nigel,
We investigated the starter kickback issue on the 912ULS a great deal at the US
office lately. Basically, it is down to a number of issues.
Including the following:
1. Carbs out of balance.
2. Gearbox too loose, dog gears may need to be shimed. Skydrive, or Lockwood can
do this.
3. Insufficent power to the starter. On cold days, unless you have a large battery,
external power may be nessicary on the 912S.
4. Sprag clutch loose or warn - replace this last as it is the hardest.
The high torque starter also helps, however, with enough power you should still
be fine.
Also, carbs out of balance, a loose gearbox, or weak battery can damage the sprag
clutch, so you may have more than one issue.
We have also found that is is helpfull to get the prop spinning fast before pulling
the choke to prevent kickback due to flooding.
Hope that helps!!

In the factory newsletter issue 25 a case was reported of an 'imprint' of the
moulded pipe appearing on the aircraft outer skin. It was suggested, as a
precaution, that several plies of BID be applied to the fuselage inner skin, to
prevent this from happening.
Has anyone else (who has not made the suggested reinforcement) seen this
'imprint' appear ?

The stuff RD sells, at least that which they sold me a few weeks ago, is
just white electrical tape. RD sell wider tape, about 1 inch, and I
have not seen that in Focus. However, the ordinary electrical tape does
fine to seal the wing root, hold on the trim tabs and all those other
jobs that have somehow never become permanent fixtures.

John,
I have seen this and I did follow the advice of adding another couple of
layers of bid. My project is too new to tell if it worked or not.

If this has happened before I will be very surprised, but I need advice. I purchased
my kit a few months ago from another builder. The wings had been in his
shop for about four years. I just unwrapped the starboard wing from the box
and have discovered that sometime in the past rodents, probably mice, had nested
there. The smell is strong. Does anyone know if the urine could have caused
any degradation that might make the wing unsafe? Assuming the wing is O.K.
what is the proper way to clean this?

Eddie,
Any sign shop should be able to supply you with a bit of vinyl which you
can cut to the right shape. The standard grade would be fine and is
very inexpensive. I plan to cut lots of little patches and carry them
with the trailer, so that I may cover the holes, every time I rig the
plane. This is the same vinyl we commonly use in auto graphics and it
can be removed, easily, without damage to the paint...

hello all ,
i`d just like to say that when i collected my fast build kit
with europa uk , ( # 573 ) , in
jan 03` , i also had to wait for the pre skinned control surfaces to arrive
, however , this gave me plenty of time
to get on with the rest of the build ! i have found that all the people at
europa have always been helpful
and efficient ! ( you can see some on my build pics at http://www.ace.aerials.btinternet.co.uk/europa.htm ),
cheers

Gidday Ed,
You'll get better answers from others but the tape is gap tape for gliders. Contact
your local glider organisation/club and they will put you straight. The other option
is to have a look on the web now that you know what it is, order it online no doubt,
and wait a day or two. This internet stuff is great!!
