I am not familiar with the main gear attach points so this may not be
appropriate but....
You could consider cutting away the cockpit module where it interferes
with the extra layups, just enough so that the CM fits snugly once again.
After you have bonded it in but before the redux has gone off replace what
you have cut away with a couple of layers of bid.
I think that if you bond it in as is, you will not only use more redux
(and eat fewer steaks) but you risk distorting the CM which may cause
problems later on, as you suggest.

My cockpit
module doesn't seem to sit as flat as it might because there is a several
ply buildup on the flange that attaches the vertical front face of the
thigh support to the floor. The reason for this is that my maingear attach
points required some thickening there. If I now weight down the module, I
seem to have a see saw effect, and whilst my flight controls sit all on one
side of the fulcrum, I don't want to force the issue. I think I will resign
myself to a little extra redux, and a diet post build.

I would like to monitor my fuel flow to determine what speed and
throttle settings give me the most economical cruise. I don't have the
panel space to fit a flow meter permanently. Can one be hooked up as a
temporary measure and if so, Is there anywhere I could hire or loan one

Richard and Steve,
I made enquiries tonight for you about the Microair / XCOM Intercom
combination.
From the man who designed the Microair :-
The Microair has a hot mike as do the ICOM A200 and King KY97 and others.
When the PTT is pressed, both mics can transmit.
There is no intercom mute / squelch available.
This method was used because it was a cheaper way of doing it and I
understand it was originally thought most pilots would be on their own
(gliding ops).
Definitely need an external intercom to overcome your problems and the XCOM
Intercom is recommended.
The XCOM Intercom has a second input for a second com, is voice activated,
has a music input and also works very well with UHF radios too.
Hope this is of some assistance.
Regards
Kingsley

I have requested from the US office of Europa a bill of sale for my kit on
three separate occasions but I have not received it yet. I took delivery of
the major portion of the kit back in February. There are still some
backordered items and they have possession of my Plexiglas. My question is:
What additional exposure do I have by not having the Bill of Sale beyond any
issue with their going under? I don't consider that a serious risk at this
point but I am keeping my ears open after the recent thread.

Steve,
You might try and contact my IP who checked me out. His name is
Lee Omernik. He did my first flight and is a top notch IP. His phone
no. is 813-681-3907. He is listed on my insurance as a second pilot.
With the a/c in your possession and Lee as your second pilot / check
pilot, you could get it put to bed in a week down here. Possibly solves
that problem!

Paul,
The language should already be specified in the operating limitations. The FAA
initially provided me limitations that did not reference aerobatic maneuvers
so I inquired. The FAA inspector didn't realize the Europa was rated for mild
aerobatic maneuvers and she therefore had to re-issue new operating limitations
with the requisite language for aerobatics for the airframe log book endorsement.

In the previous edition of the Pilot magazine there was a news item about
a company providing TAFs and METARs via SMS messaging. This is very useful
when trying to obtain weather whilst away from normal services at small
airfields. I tried it out by using it to request the TAF for La Rochelle
whilst I was abroad in the USA and it worked great. Subsequently when I
was in France with my Europa I could not get it to work although we were
able to use the system using a friend's mobile. I assume that it must be
something to do with the fact we use different mobile phone system providers.
Anyway my problem is that, as I disposed of that copy of Pilot, I have no
way of getting back to the company having lost the website address. Does
anyone have last month's edition of Pilot and can check for the website
details of this company for me?

If you have wap or gprs then try www.wapmx.com which will give you metars
and both short and long tafs. There are no charges for using the site other
than what your phone company charges you for the call/data.

I had a hard time finding insurance as well.
Europa XS Tri-Gear --
First they had down that it has a retractable landing gear. After a few
phone calls, and
a picture the price dropped down 1/2.
So In Amarillo Texas, with three people flying it, one of them with only 175
hours Total Time,
our insurance is 2,200$ a year. Each of us had to fly 5 hours with a CFI.
The CFI had never even
heard of an Europa much less fly one! However the insurance company did
approve him.

It seems that the insurance market is restricted to a couple of underwriters
who will provide coverage for experimental aircraft in the US. Also it is
still be a cost issue in that coverage would still cost about $2500.00 US
whether conventional or tri-gear.

I read all this about the "high" prices for stuff in the US with amusement.
I know a guy in DE who built an RV6A and he thought that $900 for insurance
was high. And you think $2200 is high for three people one with quite low
hours.
You guys should think yourselves lucky.
Over here insurance is at least $2500 and maybe more. My first year was
$3000.
And I also read of people who say that they spent $55000 building their
Europa. Here if you buy the kits and the rest of the stuff including
reasonable instrumentation and the sensible mods like the speed kit it works
out at close to 50,000 which is $85000. I wonder why everything works out
more expensive here ? Understandable if it was a US kit (like a RV which
would have to be shipped over here). But this is an English kit.
PhD thesis - Explain this phenomenon :-) Tax (VAT) at 17.5% explains some of
it (10 % more than the average sales tax there), although when I think about
it you don't pay sales tax on Europa kits unless you live in FLA - right ?
I also see that there are complaints there that AVGAS 100LL is now up to $3
a US gallon - here it went past $7 a US gallon some time ago !
Lots of smilies :-)))))))))))))))))

I think the problem with an internal intercom within a radio us that there
is just one mike circuit. So to have two mikes working they have to be wired
in parallel on the same circuit. This leads to the well known problem of DCs
not being compatible with anything else if connected in parallel. (Reason -
low impedance mike but I won't bore you with details).
So these internal to radio intercoms are OK if there is only one
mike/headset. Otherwise a separate intercom is required. Certainly my KX125
has an intercom internally but I am not using it as I want voice activated
for me and P2 and independent circuits.

Hold the phone folks on the Microair and the Xcom. I have two microairs
and an Xcom intercom. I also paid them $100USDs for a harness to tie
the works together. The harness had a zillion errors that took me a
looong time to find them all. When corrected, it still didn't
work....... I began a loooong process of trying to get Xcom to remedy
things to no avail. I was about to s-can the works when they finally
started responding. They sent me another intercom which didn't work
either, interestingly in a different way! They now sound more
interested in making things right. Both intercoms and the harness are
back in Oz and I am breathing hard waiting to see what happens. Sooo,
hold the phone! I'll report what happens.

You will need the bill of sale, before the FAA will register you as the owner
when you apply for registration and "N" numbers.
The bill of sale is part of the required documents for the FAA.

Gidday,
About the imprint..............YES. Mal Mc Lure's a/c here in Aussie, which
took out the "Tour de Elegaunce" and "Members Choice" awards is faultless,
except for this imprint. For a couple of plies of BID its well worth it. I
know I will be doing it, with carbon, or a carbon/kevlar mix cloth I have.
I'm not sure about how many layers you need, but probably a single ply of
carbon would be enough, or two would be plenty, even BID for that matter.

I'm hoping that's true. I used two ply of carbon fiber bid over the entire
fuel filler area. This finishing stuff is lots of work, hate to see stuff

Tom (Oh yes, I know of another builder who has been waiting a looooong
time for delivery of his paid for Xcom vhf 760.)

hello all,
thanks for the replies , it looks as though the external
intercom is the way to go for the microair ,
- or even the xcom 760 radio - it`s internal intercom is more
conventional ,

If only that were so. Any State of residence which has a sales tax can
hold you liable for sales taxes not collected by an out-of-state vendor.
Some also have a kissin' cousin called a "use tax," wherein they can wait
until the aircraft receives its airworthiness cert before commencing the
assessment process.

I feel slightly ashamed Bryan, I would have written earlier but I've been
yanked away again to mend a Cozy
There were 3 of us who were lucky enough to go on Dave Buzz' Arctic Circle
tour. It was fantastic. Dave is a brilliant leader, so professional and
competent. (he was a weatherman once) We got to meet a lot of nice people,
Jos Okhuijsen, Svein Johnsen and his DC3 flying friend not least, I saw my
old friends Harald Linke and Norbert Hoffman. Norbert is fighting to get
his medical back, he has a nasty attack which his doctors said they
couldn't cure. Anyone who knows Norbert prays that his body can cure it.
Norbert, I hope you won't mind me mentioning this but when I had my problem
the good wishes of all of you helped me enormously. Just remember everyone
who knows you loves you.
The scenery north of Stockholm is daunting, nothing but 800 miles of trees,
sea, lakes and tundra but the Rotax never missed a beat. Ivalo, 68 north 27
east is a beautiful place, totally dependant on our Gulf Stream for it's
life style, is very hospitable, that's where our Club web site lives. I am
amazed by the log cabins, they look so basic but I just know they must be
adequate at 30 below. Hospitality is wonderful, even better than we
Europeans get in the USA, reindeer steak is much better than cow steak and
the fresh water "whitefish" was superb.
We had fantastic sky scapes both north and south. One of which stopped us
reaching Narvic. The lady ATC at our diversion still had a smile when we
went up to her tower. Our leader found it necessary to park in the first
turn off of the runway she specially opened for us, it was closed so we
declared an emergency at her suggestion, to look at the cowling. (It was
still shaking with cold.!?!) So was I, but it was rough at 500 feet over
the lake, well below the mountain tops. Laster the same day we eventually
landed in Oslo, around 10:30 PM to be very adequately looked after by
Svein. ( I'd love to sail one of those Trimarans we watched racing!)
The people were the best part, when you get into a group like ours the
friendship and mutual help available is so uplifting. We can all give a
little and it is always amazing that always so much more than we give comes
back. Makes life worth living.
Thanks again Dave for ten days of wonderful memories.
Graham

For your information EAA is working on making this bill of sale issue easier
on manufacturers & builders both.
Bob Jacobsen
N165BB
June 2, 2004 - EAA's recently submitted a request to change a Federal
Aviation Regulation (FAR) that would ease administrative burdens on for
homebuilders when they register their kit-built aircraft. FAR 47.33
currently requires the owner of an aircraft built from a kit to submit a
bill of sale with the application. The problem is most manufacturers do not
provide a bill of sale with the delivery of a kit. However, they do provide
an invoice.
EAA's recommends adding the words "or invoice" to FAR 47.33(c) as follows:
"If he built the aircraft from a kit, the applicant must also submit a bill
of sale or invoice from the manufacturer of the kit."
In February this year, FAA requested public comments for amending, removing
and simplifying any FAR. EAA's Aviation Services department routinely helps
EAA members sort out problems encountered while registering their aircraft.
the lack of a bill of sale is by far the biggest cause for delays in the
process.
"The requirement of a bill of sale causes a disproportionate number of
rejected registration applications that results in an administrative burden
on both the FAA and the aircraft builder," said Aviation Services Director
Charlie Becker. "Nothing is more frustrating to a builder than having the
paperwork process unnecessarily delay the first flight of the aircraft that
they worked so hard to complete."
The FAA's goal in requiring this documentation is to establish that a
particular kit was the starting point in the construction of the aircraft
regardless of the make or model listed by the amateur builder.
"This can be accomplished with an invoice," Becker said.
EAA members should note that it could take the FAA up to one year to
implement the requested change. EAA will continue to monitor the progress of
this change request as it works its way through the FAA/DOT rulemaking
system.

Here is a new one to be aware of?!
On a recent long flight I was having a great time zipping along enjoying the
view. As usual when I'm flying for a long stretch I put my feet up between
the rudder pedals to strech out my legs.
Everthing was fine as usual until I pulled my feet out and found out my shoe
lace had looped over the right rudder pedal. Pulling on the foot just
pulled on the pedal and trying to reach way up in the foot well to untie
myself was, umh.. interesting (takes a good bit of contortion!!).
Anyway I finally freed the foot, retied the shoe and finished my trip - good
thing I didn't find out about it on short final.
I think I'm going to buy some new flying shoes - velcro anyone.
Still grinning everytime I fly!

With ZK-UBD we've noticed that the cruise speed improves with a
passenger on board. It improves even more as the CofG is pushed back.
I didn't mention it at the time for fear of being flamed but I have
documentary and photo evidence of UBD flying straight and level at
146knots Indicated, 149knots True at 1000amsl during a test flight ...
while being tracked by military radar who confirmed my ground speed. To
achieve this the aircraft was loaded at its maximum aft CofG.
Photos of the instrument panel from this flight are available upon
request.
For those who have been following my log I apologise for the lack of
updates but I've been getting my life back in order.
Regards
Tony

Hi, Bob...
One quick war story... On a solo flight one day, I kicked my T-28 into a
spin and held it there for the required two turns. When I tried to recover,
I discovered that the heel of my low-quarter had stuck under the rudder
pedal, quite effectively jamming it in place. Just about pulled the shoe
apart. Interesting few seconds.
Cheers,
Brad
