I looked at the X-com radio last year. I was interested in it because (like
the ups/Garmin sl-40) it has a sort of dual receiver system so you can
listen to two frequencies on the one box at the same time.
Unfortunately neither are JTSO'd so out of bounds for us in Europe. In the
end I went for the Filser Atr 600 which has the basic sort of built in
intercom but at least it is voice activated.

I have been considering the Xcom with its built in intercom for my Europa.
Very interested to hear what anyone with experience with this very new
product has to say.

Hold the phone folks on the Microair and the Xcom. I have two microairs and
an Xcom intercom. I also paid them $100USDs for a harness to tie the works
together. The harness had a zillion errors that took me a looong time to
find them all. When corrected, it still didn't work....... I began a
loooong process of trying to get Xcom to remedy things to no avail. I was
about to s-can the works when they finally started responding. They sent me
another intercom which didn't work either, interestingly in a different way!
They now sound more interested in making things right. Both intercoms and
the harness are back in Oz and I am breathing hard waiting to see what
happens. Sooo, hold the phone! I'll report what happens. Tom (Oh yes, I
know of another builder who has been waiting a looooong time for delivery of
his paid for Xcom vhf 760.)

hello all,
thanks for the replies , it looks as though the external
intercom is the way to go for the microair ,
- or even the xcom 760 radio - it`s internal intercom is more conventional ,

Hi, Paul. I've got a great way to test this - I'll sit in the right
seat and act as ballast.... :-)) I can even read the instruments and
log data as a side benefit!
Congrats on getting her flying! I think Nathan is ready to help us
finish our Europa now. We have him trained to wave at planes flying
overhead, and he reads AOPA Pilot and Sport Aviation before bed. Well,
*reading* as far as a 19 month old can read, that is.

I agree!
I am using gas at 1.85$ per gallon.
Three of is are splitting the insurance, hanger rent, and maint cost..
I figure it costs around 22$ an hour to fly, but we charge ourselves 25$ to
fly (help build up the account).
Insurance to me is a rip off, not just for airplanes, but cars, houses..
etc.
But, I agree we need it..

I read all this about the "high" prices for stuff in the US with amusement.
I know a guy in DE who built an RV6A and he thought that $900 for insurance
was high. And you think $2200 is high for three people one with quite low
hours.
You guys should think yourselves lucky.
Over here insurance is at least $2500 and maybe more. My first year was
$3000.
And I also read of people who say that they spent $55000 building their
Europa. Here if you buy the kits and the rest of the stuff including
reasonable instrumentation and the sensible mods like the speed kit it works
out at close to 50,000 which is $85000. I wonder why everything works out
more expensive here ? Understandable if it was a US kit (like a RV which
would have to be shipped over here). But this is an English kit.
PhD thesis - Explain this phenomenon :-) Tax (VAT) at 17.5% explains some of
it (10 % more than the average sales tax there), although when I think about
it you don't pay sales tax on Europa kits unless you live in FLA - right ?
I also see that there are complaints there that AVGAS 100LL is now up to $3
a US gallon - here it went past $7 a US gallon some time ago !
Lots of smilies :-)))))))))))))))))

Here in UK the Fuel price is the real rip off for all those uses at up to
$6.0+ per US gallon.
The Tax on that is a huge percentage so we have a Government quite happy to
let Fuel prices rise as an increasing price yields more Tax.

Gerry et al,
Aside from fuel prices and taxes (you are 2-1/2 times our
prices - perhaps because of the puny Can. $), we pay 15% on everything -
everything - we buy; and our income, road, tire, excise taxes etc are all
equal or heavier than yours.
DIFFERENCE is I see that your road taxes build you roads, your
government services actually produce a service - perhaps not to your taste -
whereas we are taxed and the money wasted, corrupted, secreted, and thrown
at friends. Many of our taxes are taxed! Our roads are becoming tolls, our
school facilities (which we have paid for) are "too expensive to run", and
our national debt (all they talk about is deficit) requires two years work
for every man, woman and child for free, to pay for if we starve and freeze
in the interim.
Oh yes, and we have FOUR levels of government to pay for - and they all want
the same tools........ Be content.
Ferg

Subject: | Radio interference |
--> Europa-List message posted by: "geoffrey LEEDHAM" <geoff@gleedham.freeserve.co.uk>
A friend of mine with a Kitfox fitted with the Rotec 7 cyl. radial engine has a
problem with radio interference when receiving and I would like to know if anyone
has a solution.
The noise is a ticking sound (which I guess is ignition) which increases with
revs, making radio reception very difficult.
The engine is fitted with 1 magneto type ignition and 1 Hall effect ignition which
depends on battery power.(similar to a car type)
Switching off either ignition does not remove the fault, and neither does wiring
the radio (Icom IC-A200) to an independent power source.
He has resistor plugs, has tried fitting resistor caps, and has fitted a suppressor
to the positive side of the Hall system coil. Also have tried swapping the
radio with the King KY97A.
The external antenna is mounted on the rear top fuselage about 6 Ft behind the
panel.
Any ideas would be helpful.

Could you elaborate ? What governs what radio one may fit in a homebuilt in the
UK ?

JTSO now overrides the CAA's own approved list.

26 Jun 2004 Tour Match
Australia (51) v England (15)
Wallabies gain revenge in emphatic style
World champions England suffered a crushing defeat at sold-out Suncorp
Stadium as Australia gained emphatic revenge for handing over the Webb
Ellis Trophy seven months ago.
And now I'm sore about Mark Philippousis ! ! God, how can I ever win
Jeremy ?? Tell you what, I'd be a lot sorer if I had a bird like his !
! Who said that ?
> What rugby match? It's summer time here and we are flying or playing
cricket.
Mind you I hear Wilko was teaching Beckham how to kick over the bar!.
Also I
was amazed to find that the Swiss are no longer neutral !
Yeah Bob, I believe you mate. Anyway, what's this about you playing
Cricket ? Since when could England play Cricket ?
> Not that
the ancestors of Mr. Hurst were born Aussies, of course, but they don't
like
us mentioning them :-)
That's only because my ancestors were Pommies mate ! !
Still waiting for Nev's clanger. I see he has attempted something but
the attachments were stripped off.
Thanks fellas

OK OK !
We have had other things on our minds recently.... in the Euro 2004
football [soccer] championship, we [England] were knocked out by
Portugal, who had a devious plan.... they had twelve men on the pitch,
instead of eleven, the extra player was cunningly disguised as a Swiss
Referee................
Cheers,
Nev.
Sorry Nev, this came in after the others.
Excuses Excuses, funny how the referees are always seen to be on the
winning side. Never have I heard supporters of a winning team
complaining how the ref was on the losers side ! Strange thing that !
Isn't it ?
Cheers
Kingsley

Subject: | Setting the mixture - 914 Rotax |
--> Europa-List message posted by: "Paul McAllister" <paul.mcallister@qia.net>
Hi all,
I was wondering how the correct air / fuel ratio is set for a 914. I
suspect that mine is running a bit rich. I see black soot on the cowling
and on the under side of the wing. I think that the fuel flows are on the
high side. I am seeing the following numbers.
- 4500' @ 30' x 5000 rpm = 6.2 US Gallons per hour.
- 4500' @ 28' x 5000 rpm = 5.5 US Gallons per hour
- 4500' @ 26' x 5000 rpm = 4.5 US Gallons per hour
I am also suspicious that it uses more fuel at the same power settings at
higher altitudes. I will connect my laptop to my EIS latter this week and
collect a larger data set to verify my measurements.
I'd appreciate anyone's opinion as to what I am seeing so far.
Thanks, Paul
