Gents,
I know this isn=92t Europa-related, but we get around in our wonderful type,
so thought it worth posting in case anyone happens to see it on their
travels this summer. Before anyone asks, it is a genuine email that came in
through the PFA=92s communications to the Struts (sub-groups), not some chain
spam!
Dear All
I have been asked to circulate details of an aircraft which was stolen from
a locked hangar in Belgium during 22 - 23 June.
The aircraft concerned is a RANS S-6S Coyote II Wing 116, Kit number
02001357S, construction year 2001. At the time of the theft, it was French
registered 54-TP and was coloured green and white.
The owner has also sent a detailed description of the equipment and other
distinguishing features of the aircraft, which I can pass on to anyone
interested. I can also pass on the full name and contact details of the
owner.
The owner would be grateful if you are all able to bring this to the
attention of your members through newsletters or any other mechanism.

Club Committee title is "The Rottweiler", but those of us close to
him can't imagine why that should be so .... anyway, it was clearly a
mistake to let him off the leash!
And as for me, I freely admit to being self-serving - I just want to
have fun in my Europa whenever I get it finished - but wait a minute,
doesn't that apply to all of us, wherever we are?

Wow!!!
I just got into the office to check my e-mails and what a surprise. I am still
in disbelief. To John and Patti, thanks for all you have done. What else is
there to say that hasn't already been said.
Regarding OSH, Misti and I are still planning on attending. We were planning on
staying at the rental house John had arranged, so... if we can get a small group
together this might be a very attractive option. So with that, I put my
name in the hat. Anyone else care to join me? As John points out we need to
act quickly.
Regarding the Europa Club, will there be any presence at OSH? Being an early building
A028 I have been a member of the Europa Club since '96. Back then we
were a very small group of builders US and UK. I am still a member today and
will continue to support the club for many years to come. Steve D. I appreciate
all that you have done with your web site although I have yet to fully utilize
it. As mentioned by many others, the Europa is a fantastic aircraft in all
variants. The design will survive...that is for certain. In the meantime,
we as Europa builders/flyers/owners will need to unite to the benefit of all.
To those still building, fear not. Given this forum, the Europa Club, and hopefully
a reorganized Europa you will finish your plane.
This will be my first trip to OSH and to boot it will be in a plane I built. Can't
beat that. I hope to meet as many of you as possible and encourage you to
make this trip if at all possible.

Hi All,
If I gave the impression that the sky was falling, with my post about the US
office, that was not my intention, and I apologize.
I want to make it clear to everyone that the powers that be have assured me
that Europa has every intention of staying in the US. If we sell the US
demonstrators, as we normally do every few years, we will likely get new
ones shortly. Now is a good time to do that as we don't have as many air
show commitments.
As we all have discovered from Keith's email to Dave, the company is going
through a transition right now. I am sure that after this is completed,
things will be much better for all of us than before.
Unfortunately, this transition has proved not to be a seamless one for the
US at least.
Many of you have asked me what you can do to help - what you can do is be
positive!

On to other topics, I've been in contact with John and we're going to post
the US inventory on the site. As items get sold the post will be updated.
Tentative plans are for sales to be through emails or PMs on the site, with
sales completed on the phone at an agreed upon time with John.
I'm also setting up a Forum to post the parts that a builder still needs.
Each builder can post his list of parts. This will be added to a separate
database, ie: order 5 engine mounts, 4 front forks, etc. So, if I have four
builders, money in hand, that need glass, and you have three we can throw in
together. Great (The first order we get out I'll join twice, and I don't
even need any parts.)
I'm also looking for my database of parts, so off the shelf items can be
listed. If someone has such a list please email it to me so I can edit and
source it. My file is on a hard drive that's been in storage for 3 years.
Believe me, I know that the Europa Club has the best interest of the Europa

keen to get the US Europa guys more involved in the Club, so I'd like to
nominate SteveD! Am I allowed to pay his membership to make him eligible?
(Steve, the job's a doddle, honest, mate! The VC has nothing to do unless
the Chairman stuffs his plane really, really, really badly and becomes
DaveDoesn'tBuzz. The Webmaster job you've shown you are already well capable
of doing - the only other part of the job is to fend off 30 emails a day
asking for links to the sender's EC-lobbying-services web site and their
lowest-airfares-between-Azerbaijan-and-Uzbekistan web site. The NC Rep job
is the hardest one - staying awake 4 times a year for the best part of a day
while 40 impending octogenarians (plus Twiggy - he's OK actually, you'll
like him) discuss the merits of different approaches to European airspace
regulation.)
I'm keeping the Rottweiler job, though. I like that one :-)

OK, OK, OK, enough of this.
I do believe that we need to band together now to insure parts
availablitiy and other forms of support. I need glass, and fwf for my
kit. i have not yet joined the club, but you can be sure that i will
now. There is power in numbers. Steve's bulletin board is wonderful
and i am looking forward to its growth. That seems a good forum for
the club and i i hope it can be integrated one day. There is no need
for bad blood between any of us. We are all on the same team, and i
don't believe anyone is here to make a runaway profit. There are much
easier ways to do that than at $25 a pop.
I think i will be going to Oshkosh to meet some of y'all and see
hopefully a nice flock of Europas. Erich, i would be interested in
hearing about the cost of joining you at the house. I will be there
with my woman from thursday or friday through sunday. We were planning
on camping but she is not too keen on that.

The very cordial contact person is Sue Nickson and the most surprising
(anyway for a dutchman) was the price: GBP 54,38 per set instead of the
factory price of about GBP 90,00. I was not charged for VAT whilst the factory
always has charged me, so the factory price would have been about GBP 110,00
total per set. The double! But this will only be for export I suppose.

I would like to make a public apology to the Europa Club and in
particular to Jeremy.
We seem to be very like mined people who are separated by a common
language. We've had our go arounds before, only to to end up in
agreement with neither changing his original position.
The reason I posted publicly was to get enough attention to make sure
that no one is left behind. I gain nothing from this, I have every nut
and bolt sitting in the garage. I'm very passionate about making sure
every builder gets what he or she needs to finish their project. To
that end, I continue to offer any and all help to Europa Aircraft, The
Europa Club, and any builder I can. I'll put my project on hold to make
calls, enter data, run down loose ends. The Europa builders/ flyers is
an international group and together we'll see the next 1000 planes
built. Email me off list and we'll start working on what needs to be
done.

Richard - no factory rep if that's what you mean - but a high
proportion of Europa builders in EAA Chapter 222 (ie Sweden) are also
Europa Club members. If your member list is out of date, contact me

Nigel,
The 0-200 is slightly heavier than the 914 with all up weight of 212 lbs
installed with tuned exhaust and 4 inch prop extension. Much lighter than
the Subaru and it does work quite well with 1 builder in US having over 150
hours. Two more are being installed at this time. It is not an engine to
be discounted as any FBO can work on it with parts available everywhere.
You can spend days waiting for parts on Rotax and Jabiru while being
grounded somewhere. There are unfortunately not many service centers here
in US where the Rotax can be worked on by qualified technicians. The Europa
is designed around the Rotax and it is still the best installation but
probably would be best not to discount engines that you are not familiar
with to say they are unsuitable. I fitted the first 0200 here in the US to
the company demonstrator and found the installation very suitable. It fits
inside of the classic cowling quite comfortably. Ivan flew the airplane and
it flew nicely without any added weight in the tail. The decision with new
management at Europa at the same time elected to only Market Rotax engines
so I was asked to remove it from the aircraft. It is now being installed in
Claud Tugwell's Europa Tri Gear.

Your choice of engine is the most expensive individual choice you can make
during the manufacture of your Europa. Several engines have come and gone
but no engine has proved its worth any better than the Rotax. Some of them
have proved totally unsuitable whilst others have added weight which reduces
payload (a valuable commodity). As Ivan said in the early days 'There is
more work developing a new engine installation than designing the airframe'.
So be sure that you make the right choice before you commit yourself. The
factory problems are not a good reason to change your choice of engine.
Whatever happens, I know first hand that there is very likely to be a Rotax
firewall forward package available. Whether it comes from inside or outside
the company time will tell.
For what it is worth my input on the engine choice is as follows:
Rotax
Well proven, good power to weight, good reliability, good fuel consumption,
expensive to buy
Subaru
Cheaper to buy, heavy (expect to waste about 60lb of payload), slightly more
difficult to handle with a monowheel setup (due to the pitch moment couple-
applicable to all heavy engines), slightly greater fuel consumption,
statistics tend to show a slightly poorer reliability
Jabiru
Cheaper to buy, some cooling aspects to address, direct drive and high prop
revs lead to inefficient power delivery, still quite early days to fully
assess as few flying in Europas
BMW
Much development work done by one builder in UK but torsional vibration
amongst other problems made it an unlikley contender (this builder now uses
a Rotax)
Wilksch Diesel
Lovely engine as a replacement for Lyco/Continentals but weight is still an
issue for the Europa installation, still only one flying in development, not
reccommended by manufacturer for trigear as weight is already critical in
monowheel installation
Other engines such as the Mid West Rotary, and an 0-200 have been tried and
found unsuitable.
Final observations
You only want to buy one engine no matter how expensive it is, changing your
mind later is time consuming and expensive
Rotax powered Europas fetch more secondhand.
The Europa is a great touring aircraft so maximising payload by keeping the
empty weight down is helpful.
Heavy engines require balancing - mounting the battery in the tail is not
ideal.
The cheaper options might save 10% on the whole project price but you might
not think it worth the saving later.
These are just a few personal observations picked up over the last 10 years.
I hope they are useful to those who have yet to commit themselves on engine
selection.

that's a bit unkind. The Club is certainly not self serving, maybe some
people get a bit over focused on occasion, not surprising in a situation
like this. Saturday night was more than somewhat emotional for all of us
here at Kemble.
The important point is that as a cohesive organised and recognised Group we
do have some muscle, the more the better and remember, the UK people also
have an agenda for persuading our PFA to be less obstructive. That tends to
colour one's attitude somewhat, perhaps in a way not obvious to
you overseas guys.

In fact it's in Lapland, 2 or 3 hundred miles north of the arctic circle.
Dave Buzz and three other disciples (inc. myself) were there three weeks
ago and the hospitality was outstanding. It included our first rides in a
floatplane.

I would not go the Jabiru way. It's an air cooled engine. It is not
possible to optimise engine performance without liquid cooling unfortunately
It's not possible to optimise propeller performance without a gearbox to
slow the prop down from the 4000 (+) rpm necessary for optimum engine
performance.
