      Hi Bob

Excuse my ignorance. I assumed that the reason that the 0-200 had been
removed was that it was not a success rather than politics. I still feel
that 212lb is still rather heavy. I estimate that this is a weight penalty
of about 40-50lb over the Rotax. In my case the numbers stack up as follows:

      Empty weight (Rotax engine) 850lb
      Fuel 120lb
      Pilot & Pax 330lb
      Baggage 70lb

      MTOW 1370lb

If I was to use an 0-200 my baggage limit would become 20-30lb. This is not
very practical when touring. Also I doubt whether the 0-200 will be quite as
fuel efficient which would reduce range. Those of us that pay nearly $7/US
gall would not be impressed by the increased costs either.

      Regards

      Nigel Charles

I would like to make a public apology to the Europa Club and in
      particular to Jeremy.
We seem to be very like mined people who are separated by a common
language. We've had our go arounds before, only to to end up in
agreement with neither changing his original position.
The reason I posted publicly was to get enough attention to make sure
that no one is left behind. I gain nothing from this, I have every nut
and bolt sitting in the garage. I'm very passionate about making sure
every builder gets what he or she needs to finish their project. To
that end, I continue to offer any and all help to Europa Aircraft, The
Europa Club, and any builder I can. I'll put my project on hold to make
calls, enter data, run down loose ends. The Europa builders/ flyers is
an international group and together we'll see the next 1000 planes
built. Email me off list and we'll start working on what needs to be
      done.

      Sincerely,
      Steven Dunsmuir

P.S. Jeremy, as I've said before, I'd never join a club that would have
      me as a member.

      Dear Sven,

We tried the IVO PROP on G-YURO with its 912 engine and the performance was notably
poor. The cooling efficiencey on the ground also suffered. Unless the prop
has changed radically in the years since, I would not recommend its use on
      a Europa.

      Greetings All and Commiserations,

I have no facts, only opinions based on my four years of
association as a customer with Europa.

      OPINIONS Follow:
Bankrupcy is no surprise, it naturally follows when subcontractors stop
shipping needed parts for lack of payment and customers stop paying for
kits and parts that are late for months to years.

New investors, motivated by profit margin are highly unlikely given
the company's track record. Builders as investors who have faith in the
products are another story. Other troubled kit companies have in fact
      been rescued this way.

Keith has been a poor CEO. He as been an absent landlord in many senses,
with little to no communications to customers or even to at least some
of the present investors. No appropriate financial controls. No attention
paid to the new markets in the west. Inadequate investment in R&D, no
new product development for years, etc., etc. Surely no one should be
surprised that he made no public appearance at the recent PFA meeting.

Key staff (from the builder/customer viewpoint) have served well and
      beyond
the call of a "day job" but have been shabbily treated. I include John,
      Nev and Andy
      here.

Builders without a firewall forward kit may not be as screwed as they may
think, fortunately. There are really only two items which are not COTS
(commercial, off the shelf): the cowl and the engine mount. There is
      reason
to hope that a well known builder assistance group in the US may produce
such items. I'll leave it to them to announce this at the appropriate
      time, but
they read this list and would no doubt be encouraged by positive comments
here. (Don't EMail me about them though)

      Opinions off

Does anyone have a glider wing kit they want to sell?

I've basically finished everything in the builders manual and firewall forward
book but it still seems like I have another year of work left. At this point
I'm mopping superfill on the fuselage to catch the imperfections, dings, and
ripples. My wings and flight control surfaces have been done for years and have
been primed with UV smooth prime. I have caught some issues with paint problems
concerning this manufacturer though specifically haven't heard problems
with the primer. It fills in real nice and sands good. Though if there is anyone
with some bad history to relate I don't want to commit to doing the fuselage
with it . Better to regroup before the whole job is done. Lets have some

Based on my experience your time estimate of a year is about right. On the
subject of paint my advise is do nothing until you have decided on who is
going to paint the bird and what with. Then between you, you can decide
what you do and what the paint shop will do. This can save a lot of wasted
      effort (and paint).

to new names (although I don't guarantee all those neural pathways
      will stick!).

Among the stuff we cleared up at the end, we found a jacket and an
umbrella. If you can describe them, you can claim them.

Thanks to everyone for their support and good wishes. I'm still
clearing up the aftermath, so to those who were promised CDs, etc,
and to those waiting for access to the Members-only area of the
website - please be patient while I sift through everything that
needs attention. And maybe after all that I'll get some work done on
      the Europa this month ....

      regards

Well, there's always me, still lurking here on the list and trying to get things

almost nil progress the last 6 months (damn job).

For those still considering which paint/primer to use, let me share my
experience. I sanded out and filled the control surfaces for A055 in
the standard manner. The primer I chose was recommended by my paint
guy, who paints a lot of Corvetts and other "glass" vehicles. It's an
RM product (German origan, I believe) Called NP80 with a hardner, PA80.
This product flows on very well and does a great job of filling all the
nicks and scratches. It builds up, fast, and sands easily, leaving a
very slick finish. Once the surfaces were prepped, he shot them with an
RM two stage, base/clear by the same manufacturer. Two coats of clear,
then sanded and two more coats, then buffed. The whole job is only a
few mils thick. Finish is slick as glass and mirror deep. Pictures are
on the July page at http://www.N55XS.com Anyone interested in a durable
finish, deep shine and light weight, may want to consider these products.

I have no connection to RM, other than being a very satisfied customer...

      Good question Alan.

While I know little about the aircraft parts industry, other than the many I
have purchased over the years, I can speak on this subject about automotive
parts; A business that I have been in for some 20 years now.

In most cases, small design changes can be made that will skirt such issues
as copyright, and intellectual property rights of the Original Equipment
Manufacturer. Many times these design change will also incorporate enchantments
      for
longer wear or better function. We call them after-market parts.

      Hi Paul,
I used smooth prime on my fuselage and used Sherwin Williams
"Concept" to finish it off. The key is to let the smooth prime "dry"
completely. Mine was at least 30 days before I put Sherwin Williams
primer on and then finish coat. I actually did a different type of
application. I did a wet-on-wet application. The primer went on and
then about 20 minutes later I had the finish color coat applied. Its
been two years + and it looks as good today as it did the first day.

I've called Aircraft Spruce and Wicks Aircraft here in the states, and explained
the situation to them. Aircraft Spruce is sending me dealer paperwork, and associated
      discount information.
Wicks would apply a discount for bulk purchase. Items would have to sorted and
packaged here by me. I'm faxing them the hardware list for FWF 912s as a starting
point, then see what happens if I multiply the order.
For people wishing to make orders on their own, Wicks will be offering 10% on all
orders placed during the week of Oshkosh, July 27.

Anyone having a parts database, please email it, or post it to me on the site in
a PM. We'll need all the different parts lists.

I've got Sikkens Urethane over Smoothprime and it really worked well.
The absolute key thing is to make sure that the smoothprime is really
dry before overspraying otherwise the top coat can blister. I was told
to leave it at least two months before over spraying.

      Bob,
Sorry to hear of your troubles so vividly and amusingly portrayed in your
e-mail. Equally sorry that you did not make it to Leicester today for the
really pleasant fly-in we had. No doubt we will see you soon enough though
once you have solved your problems.
We did talk about them at bacon butty time, but soon dismissed them as
rantings of a past his sell-by trike owner.
All that's best. Bryan PS. Was that '60' cab fare?

      Hi Duncan,
Several years ago we tried the VP on G-ELSA 914 equipped here in the US at
the request of Rotax. It was fitted but the vibration was so bad that we
had to send it back to the factory. On the second try the vibration was
still not tolerable but we flew it and found the performance less than with
the Fixed Pitch Warp Drive. We recently installed one on a 912 but could
not get it to work properly. Not long ago a Velocity went down after losing
a blade on one with 4 people losing their lives. Hard for me to give it any
      kind of recommendation.

      Steve,

Please understand that Europa is not out of business. In fact we may still be
going to Oshkosh. I was also firmly told that the demonstrators will not be sold
untill they have replacements. Yes, changes are being made, and there is
a very positive transition going on in the UK. Actions like calling one of our
vendors who I have a good relationship with in the US, like spruce, and telling
them that we are out of business dosen't help the situation at all.

What the builders, and Europa needs right now is your support. Lets do what we
can to make sure the company not only survives, but offers better service, and
sells even more kits than ever. That is the best thing you, and I can do for
      the current, and future builders.

Can you please tell me who you talked to & what you said to Spruce so I can call
      & do some damage control?

      Finally, please stay positive!

      John

      discount information.

      Steve,

I used Superfil, Smooth prime and Sikkens base + clear. It turned out
great. The only thing I would change is how I approached the wing. It was
perfect when it went to the painters but when he baked it the underlying
substrate moved and you can see it. I have since looked at a few XS wings
and they are all the same. I would try baking the wing and then doing a
final go over with primer. Any paint shop with an oven could bake it for
      you.

It took me the best part of a year to sand and fill, but I estimate 50% of
that time was spent whining about the task and 50% was actually doing it. I
got on best by applying the Superfil with long flexible spreaders with a
little heat to help it along, and I found spraying on the Smooth prime made
the finish sand go faster. My 914XS came in at 860 lbs, I think I over did
the filler/primer by about 10 lbs.

      Paul

      Fellow builders:

Today was a landmark in the construction of A055. At about 3PM CDT (US
time) the family and I bonded on the top fuselage. As John said, Mr.
level and Mr. plumb bob agreed that all was straight. What a relief to
get that one under the old belt. Took about half a can of Redux (I hate
trying to convert metric.. :)), with the scrapings going to bond in the
fuel filler neck. All in all, a very successful day...

I used Smooth Prime and it seemed to work well. I finished with Top Gloss
and found it a lot of work. It required much sanding and buffing to get a
fair gloss(not a high gloss). I decided I wanted to fly in this lifetime
and called it quits on more buffing. In two years it still looks about the
same. Polyfiber has discontinued Top Gloss and now recommends Aeropoxy.
Recently I had need to repaint a couple areas one on the cowl and one on the
wing(damage from experiments and hanger rash). The patched areas look good
and are hard to find except they look better than the rest of the finish.
If I had it to do over, I would go with Aeropoxy or maybe Imron.
Flightcrafters finished my glider wings with an automobile equivalent of
Imron. They look fantastic after about eight months use.

forward book but it still seems like I have another year of work left. At
this point I'm mopping superfill on the fuselage to catch the imperfections,
dings, and ripples. My wings and flight control surfaces have been done for
years and have been primed with UV smooth prime. I have caught some issues
with paint problems concerning this manufacturer though specifically haven't
heard problems with the primer. It fills in real nice and sands good.
Though if there is anyone with some bad history to relate I don't want to
commit to doing the fuselage with it . Better to regroup before the whole
job is done. Lets have some input.

      Ah!
      There is life out there!
Perhaps it is my light humour that has stopped folks recognising the problem
as being life threatening, or even they are so used to engine talk they
      can't revert to aircraft problems!????

You need a new connector part, the bit that goes into the tank and is
clipped into place with a piece of large rubber hose.
If you take a look down it from the tank side prior to fitment of the
strainer gauze you will see that the hole which is to be the main exit hole,
which is drilled with its centre offset and parallel to the main body of the
connector (not the angled screw threaded hole) ,is restricted by the fact
that the drilling can not be drilled right through (otherwise it would break
out ). Then imagine how much the restriction is made worse by insertion of
the gauze and redux down the inside and you should get the problem.
The hole is restricted even more by the presence of the gauze.
      Regards

| Subject: | exhaust fumes/ cockpit |

--> Europa-List message posted by: "Jon Smith" <jon.smith680@tesco.net>

Hi everyone, I'm a new boy to Europa's, having just bought a completed one (G-TERN)
about 4 months ago - and have enjoyed every minute of it so far!

I've noticed that I'm getting exhaust fumes into the cockpit (faint smell from
time to time). On a two hour flight recently my CO detector (plastic card type)
started to go grey - not good! Also, at high angles of attack and power -
like just after take off - rather hot air is finding it's way in to the cockpit
      - seems to be up through the tunnel. Not too bad in winter but quite unpleasant
      in summer!

Could anyone advise me if these are known problems with Europa's and what I should
be looking at to cure it.

My cockpit is not upholstered yet but a kit came with the plane to do it. None
of the gaps into the cockpit are sealed - ie I can see the ground through the
undercarriage and brake levers! Also through the rudder pedal tube exit holes.

Should I be looking to seal every gap like this up? (Good to do before the upholstery!)
If so, what do people use to block the gaps - some sort of door draft
excluder brush strip, or soft rubber perhaps?

Any advice would be very much appreciated!
      Jon Smith
