--> Europa-List message posted by: Andrew Sarangan <asarangan@yahoo.com> I recall speaking to the Europa factory, and was adviced that it was not necessary to treat the parts that are being bonded into the rudder, tailplane, flaps, ailerons etc.. The manual mentions corrosion treatment for the first time in chapter 8 (wings). I am wondering what's so special about the wing hardware that needs protection? Since I prefer a DIY process, alodine appears to be the easiest. A google search revealed that there is no such thing as "Alodine", but names like Alodine 1001 or Alodine 5200 etc... Being no expert in metallurgy, I am at a loss which one to buy. Don't I also need an acid cleaning agent prior to applying the alodine itself? Does this come with the Alodine, or should I buy this seperately? Is there a FAQ I can read about the alodine process? Thanks! ===== Andrew Sarangan http://www.geocities.com/asarangan

--> Europa-List message posted by: "Rob Housman" <RobH@hyperion-ef.com> If you mean towing great distances on a public road with the aircraft's landing gear on the pavement, that is a really bad idea. Aircraft tires are not designed to tolerate the heat buildup that road vehicle tires tolerate so well, and about the only thing the two types of tires have in common is color and that they are both made of rubbery stuff (but not the same stuff). My primary flight instructor insisted that I keep my taxi speed at about the pace of a fast walk because even the normal taxi distance from the ramp to the runway could tax the tires at any faster pace. Josok, My fuel system piping is all 3/8@ alum tubing. I did essentially the same as Steve, using Safiar drains as he, but was warned not to buy auto parts unless the flaring cones were at 37deg. Most auto parts here and U.S. (Weatherhead by name) are at 45deg for the bulk of fittings, but aviation I believe are 37deg. The two are not compatible I am told. Weatherhead sell 37deg bits but you must confirm same................ I guess this is not a problem if you are all flexible conduits. FWIW Ferg A064

    Subject: Alodine advice
--> Europa-List message posted by: "Rob Housman" <RobH@hyperion-ef.com> Aircraft Spruce has exactly what you need: Metalprep 79 (P/N 79-QT for the one quart size) and Alodine 1201 (P/N 1201-QT, and I think you can guess the size). Sufficiently detailed instructions are on the labels. The Metalprep is a mixture of phosphoric acid (the stuff in cola drinks!!) and glycols in water and it will remove any minor crud including oxides on the surface of the aluminum (and factory parts very likely arrived needing nothing more than this treatment). The Alodine contains the somewhat nastier chromic acid in water and should be handled with care and only while wearing eye protection and gloves, although prudence suggests the same for handling Metalprep. Should you prefer another source, the manufacturer is Henkel Surface Technologies at http://www.hstna.com/index.cfm Check out http://www.buyhstna.com/docs/235110.pdf for details on Alodine 1201, and http://www.buyhstna.com/docs/234461.pdf for Metalprep 79. Subject: Re: Alodine advice
--> Europa-List message posted by: Mike Baker <galahav@yahoo.com> Alodine is a chromate chemical conversion coating. search using that application is easy. wear rubber gloves. usually degrease, Scotch brite, acid etch, and apply alodine, then rinse in water. this is a loctite site that gives the numbers. http://www.loctiteaero.com/index.cfm?ID=170 I don't know where you live but chromate's are heavy metals and have a bunch of restrictions. water soluble and reactive(EPA) might be better to make parts and find a local fab shop to do the metal prep and eroxy prime. even thru color coat. you may be able to order alodine thru aircraft spruce. 1201 is gold, 1001 is no color. most unpainted brite surfaces use the no color, most painted parts use the gold. plastic containers for etch and alodine because the chromate will react with metal and weaken (even eliminate the chromate from) the broth. . mechanical application for touch up usually is to wipe surface with rag coated in liquid. most specs say that wiping of the surface is treatment enough. a long soak in the alodine bath will give a nice gold color but it doesn't add any more protection than the wipe. some paints use other metal preps for conditioning the metal surface prior to paint application. you can ask your local paint rep. --- Andrew Sarangan <asarangan@YAHOO.COM> wrote: > --> Europa-List message posted by: Andrew Sarangan > <asarangan@yahoo.com> > > I recall speaking to the Europa factory, and was > adviced that it was > not necessary to treat the parts that are being > bonded into the rudder, > tailplane, flaps, ailerons etc.. --> Europa-List message posted by: James Nelson <europajim@juno.com> Hi Augustine, I put a "boot" around my gear retraction arm by using a very thin buna rubber sheet that I "glued" together with super glue. I purchased it from that big supply house in Atlanta with the big yellow catalog. The name skips my memory banks at the moment. Super glue is a really good adhesive and it does not forgive if you put it in the wrong place. It also sticks your fingers together :-))) I used the stuff to glue it to the underside of the tunnel as it works very well there also. The tunnel needs to be clean for all to work together. I also made a boot around the fuel tank protrusions as they enter the cockpit area. This sealed the undercarriage area from the cockpit area. Seems to be working after two years with no problems.
