I am ready to instal the glass in my trigear but should I be painting the doors
with UV undercoat first? The doors seem to be a different finish than the fuselage
(all bought at the same time 6 years ago) a dark grey flat finish.
Thanks in anticipation of advice.

Hi Steve,
The doors [ and other grey bits] are made in Polyester Resin, scuff the grey
gelcoat off completely in the bonding area, [80 Grit] and stick the glazing
directly onto the exposed fibres.Reason ? The original rebate in the door is
2mm, the Perspex [ Plexiglass] is now 3mm thick.
The grey finnish only needs flatting before primer, the paint should be
carried over onto the perspex, to hide the glue line. There will be a joggle between
the level of the perspex, and the door skin, fill with expancell / epoxy.
Make sure you mask both sides of the glazing before you start bonding, and
use pvc tape [ electrical insulation tape] NOT PAPER MASKING TAPE. Leave the
glazing covered until after painting.
Cheers,
Nev.

Just a heads-up for those wondering about how to best contact the
administrators. I got (unsolicited by me) a questionnaire from Redman
Nichols this morning. I assume they are going out to all creditors and
suppliers - but I'm sure the validity of that assumption will become clear
in the next few days.
If you're a creditor I presume it would be best to hang on a few days and
wait for your copy. Also, perhaps the overseas folks could advise if they
get a questionnaire too, so we know how wide Redman Nichols are spreading
their net?

Many thanks to those who have made helpful comments on my website for
the build of Europa #435 at <http://home.clara.net/rowil/aviation/>.
I have recently updated it again, the chief improvement being a
search facility on each on the 100-odd pages in the site. I hope this
has made the site more useful to others, and welcome your reactions.

Excellent pages they are, and while reading through them, how or where did
you obtain that 13th (sic) service bulletin? Can't find anything more
recent then 11 from July 2002 on the factory site.

This didn't seem to go through yesterday, so here it is again!
Just a data point on the long wing Europa. I flew from Minden Nevada to OSH in
the Mini U2. The round trip great circle distance was 1424 nm X 2 2848 nmi. There
was about 10 to 15 knots of tailwind on the first 1/4 of the total flying
with a slight head wind for the second 1/4. The entire trip back had about 20
to 30 knots of headwind all the way (of course!). The long range tank was installed
and two people were onboard. The flight out was in one day. Takeoff was
at 4 am west coast time and the landing was at 715PM central time. The flight
included visiting relatives in Iowa and waiting for the airport to re-open (about
2 hours). There was also about 20 minutes of circling outside of OSH waiting
for the idiot pilots to get their act together (they closed off arrivals when
so many pilots kept messing up). The return flight had an over night stop
due to afternoon thunderstorms. I departed OSH at 730am Saturday and arrived back
in Minden Sunday - the next day at 1230 PM. The stopping point was almost
exactly the 1/2 way point (Camp Guernsey, WY).
At 28 inches and 5000 RPM at 17,500, the indicated was about 115 knots for a true
airspeed of about 158 knots. most of the flight was at 12 to 14,000 feet due
to winds.
Total fuel burn: 107.1 gallons
Average fuel price: $2.50
Total fuel cost: $268.51
Nautical miles per gallon average using the great circle distance: 26.6
Statue miles per gallon: 30.6
Not bad for "motorglider"!!!!!
Dave
A227
Mini U2
PS The only problem for the whole flight of about 25 hours tach time was the
new heater getting heat from the radiators. The good news - it worked OK. The
bad news - it is unusable due to CO entering the cabin. I bought a CO detector
that is very quick and sensitive and found CO getting to the cockpit through
the heater. It was not obvious at first, though. Once discovered and verified,
the heater was off with socks stuffed in the inlets in the footwells (all we
could come up with at the time). I was amazed that there was still CO getting
into the cabin. Once sealed off with duct tape, the readings went to zero for
the rest of the flight. It takes very little leaking to allow the CO to reach
dangerous levels. It did eventually turn the little spot dark, so this was no
drill.
Bottom line: I would never use that source for a heater - word to the wise. Even
if you fix where the CO is coming from in the engine area, a very small leak
in the baffling can allow the CO to enter the cockpit.
Back to the drawing board, but now at more relaxed pace!
PPS The show was good as usual - with a small gaggle of Europas there. It certainly
didn't look good to have the Europa booth so promative this year. Maybe
next year?????? Andy Draper was there and was good to talk to. John Hurst was
supposed to arrive on Saturday, but that was the day I and a few others (Erich
Trombley and his wife) departed.

The build manual specifies 6mm diameter clear plastic tubing along the
wings, through the ribs, for pitot / static lines and stall warner.
I have a concern that if the tubing got blocked or damaged, it could not
be replaced easily once the wings are closed.
I note that some folk have installed plastic conduit (diameter
20-25mm..?) through which smaller diameter tubing or wiring can be run.
A couple of questions on this, please:
Is it worth installing plastic conduit? Am I just being paranoid /
overly pessimistic.!? (I am not sending any cables along the wings).
In the UK, is this a mod which needs formal approval, or could it be
checked and sanctioned by my PFA inspector? (If it is the former, is it
a PFA-accepted mod..?)
(PS I've noted previous correspondence and factory recommendations on
rib reinforcement and conduit placement).
With thanks,

I have just started to fit the port aileron into the wing. It does not fit into

the closeout or is there something else I should do? If I trim the closeout
how far back can I safely go?

Europaphiles,
Does anyone have a list of the subcontractors (U.S., U.K., E.U.) that
Europa used? Nuts, bolts, screws, bearing, rod-ends and all that
assorted hardware is available through companies like ACS, Wickes and
many others. Landing gear structure, engine mounts, wings, cockpit
modules, etc can only be obtained from those who have the needed
tooling.
Would there be any possibility that an individual or group of
individuals (through The Europa Club, for instance) could approach the
subcontractors to obtain needed parts and/or spares for their kits?
For instance, I have not received my plexi windscreens. I know there
was a U.S. company that produced them for Europa U.S. If the name and
contact information for the provider were known, I could contact them
directly to request a set of windscreens. Or, if it is not feasible
for them to produce a one-off, I could find out what a minimum product
run would be and I could locate others who need windscreens and perhaps
we could assemble a minimum order.
Perhaps some of the Europa folks could assemble this information for us.
Just some ideas.
Good building and great flying,
Bob Borger

Listers,
First, let me thank everyone who responded to this thread, both on and
off list. At one listers recommendation, I contacted the folks who make
Aeropoxy and spoke with Scot Stettler, in their technical department.
He was most helpful and emailed me some data sheets, immediately, that
we talked about, while we were on the phone. After explaining to him
what the requirements were, and what pot life I was looking for, he
recommended that I try their ES6228 adhesive. It's used by Velocity
Aircraft, as well as others and has a shear strength of 9,500#. I
explained what I was going to use it for and that it may need to be
mixed with flox. His reply was that he was completely confident that
the material would more than meet the need. Best part is, the quart kit
(2 quarts with hardner) is only $39.20 and they were able to ship,
directly from the factory.
Given the cost difference and assurances by Scot (he steered me right
when I contacted him about the darkened hardner for Aeropoxy) that this
product will work, I ordered some. I'll follow up with my evaluation,
once I've had a chance to test it...

Jos - it arrived in the morning post in a Jiffy-bag with the usual
Europa factory franking. I must say I was a bit surprised to get it
at that time, given all the other things going on. It only applies to
OR5 parts delivered between the beginning of May 2001 and the end of
February 2002 (there is a safety margin built into that time frame).
>Can't find anything more

Haven't looked there recently, but it's perhaps to be expected that
the factory's website maintenance has had a low priority recently.

I had a similar problem with my XS wings and asked Neville at the factory. He
sent me the following reply:
Hi John,
The best way to deal with this is as follows.
Cut away the vertical end web at the root of the aileron in it's entirety,
flush with the octaganal aileron closeout, and also cut away some of the bonded
area of the rib to the closeout, and if needed, take a slice out of the rib,
to let the closeout move up.
This will allow the closeout to spring open enough to allow the aileron to
fit.
When the aileron is fitting in the gap=A0 OK , rebond the rib to the closeout.
Hope this will help,
Cheers,
Nev.
I followed Neville's advice and this solved the problem.
Regards
John Heykoop

In adddition to John Heykoop's forwarding of a previous answer from me [
please do that, it saves me from doing it ! ] The minimum glue line width [ the
last facet of the aileron / flap closeout] which will be bonded to the upper
panel, should be 3/8'' [ 10mm in foriegn]
Don't forget to tape a piece of floor ''lino'' onto the upper leading edge of
both the aileron and flap, when closeing out the upper panel, when removed
after full cure of the Redux, you will have a uniform gap twixt the two.
Cheers,
Nev.

SWMBO???? Not sure I know the abbreviation. But if you mean Liza, yes. Mind
you, she is happy for me to do plane stuff, too :-) She's even OK'd me to
buy a runway, as long as she can keep a horse on it. I can't understand,
though, why anyone would want a horse without wings, and one that didn't
always do what it's told to boot. In return for use of the runway, I've
insisted she clear up after said horse when I want to go flying... Horse poo
is strictly her responsibility until it reaches my vegetable-fertiliser
heap!
Actually the biggest blockers to progress on the Web Site updates recently
have been a change of laptop and all the work this Factory situation has
created. Sorry about that, all. Configuration of the new machine is now done
and I'm working on the updates again - including last night's update with
DaveBuzz's letter to Club members.
Cheers,

Tony,
Depends on what cowlings you have and therefore cooling system, (Classic or
XS)
My Classic cowlings require a different exhaust system to the XS cowling.
Different routing due to the shape and air intake position.

I spoke to the folks at LP Aero at Oshkosk. Here's the deal. They
can't sell anything to an individual right now, as they are waiting to
see what happens with Europa, but they assured me that if Europa folds,
they will produce the windows for the people who need them. I got the
idea that they would do it at Europa's price, rather than retail, since
most of us have already paid Europa for these.

All,
I called the administrators this morning and I was not on their list to send
a questonnaire to even though I had paid for parts and not received them. I
wouldn't assume they know who has unfinished business with Europa, I'd call
and give them your mailing address.

It's a pain to get off if you leave it there for any length of time. But
all is not lost as one of the citrus based cleaners will remove the
residue. It also works very well on unset Redux.

Subject: | Fitting the doors |
--> Europa-List message posted by: "simon miles" <simon.miles@tiscali.be>
I've started trying to fit the doors to my Tri-gear and am having a few
problems.
Firstly, the guides for the shoot-bolts in the doors interfere (very
slightly) with the door frame - I have checked the guides and they are as
flush as they can be to the doors so there appears to be no possibility of
installing the partner guides in the door frame without some surgery. Is
this normal?
Secondly, I am finding it difficult to get the doors to sit in position
without them springing-out proud of the door recess mid-way between the top
and bottom. I can't see where I should be trimming the doors to avoid this.
Advice would be appreciated.
Thirdly, if there is any other problem to look forward to with door
installation I'd be pleased to be forewarned!
