Guys and Gals,
Just an observation that's been puzzling me overnight... Why do we all think
Paul is lucky? He got hit by lightning - which must surely count as
seriously unlucky! I accept that he could easily have been even less lucky
still!
But we always think this, don't we???? Human nature is a strange thing.

Considering Neville is now an ex employee of EMIL I think his offer to continue
to give us all the benefit of his knowledge and experience is to be applauded.
Some of us may have lost money through the fall of the company but Neville
and Andy have been made redundant and still make it their business to provide
a support service unpaid. Obviously this cannot go on indefinitely and I
hope that anyone taking over the company realises that they represent the
technical brains of the operation and include them in their future plans.
Their attitude and integrity in these difficult times is to be admired and
it is no wonder that they were both made honourary members of the Europa
Club at the AGM.

I found exactly the same with the 912 and came to the same conclusion. Time
Rotax gave us fuel injection.
I believe Ellison did a throttle body installation for the 912. I had good
experience with one on a Lycosaurus but haven't heard about any Rotax
installations

I am coming over on the 10:30 ferry, back on the 22:30 one. I might need a
lift to the ferry after Burt's lecture if you are around. I have no idea
how long Burt and Dick will speak. They both have plenty to say about lots

Bead blasting is OK it makes the part stronger if done carefully, (by
compression the surface and stretching the inside, oversimplification! )
Grit blasting is dubious.

Man, what a scary ride. When I was in the Air Force (49 FIS Griffiss
AFB, Rome, N.Y.) we had two F-106's struck by lightning. They were in
flying formation shortly after takeoff and flew between two Cumulo
buildups. One was recovered on emergency systems. The other was lost
along with the pilot.
Forget the lottery ticket, you used up all you luck for that day.
Good flying,

Glad you are ok, look forward to hearing all the

since I spent the last year reading your builders log,
as a concellation prize I got to meet Andy Drapper ;),
he is a great guy and spent the time to answer all of

when painting my Europa, plus some of the R & D that
they are doing/considering, how about that for a
teaser lol
Also thanks wily coytee (sp?) also for spending time
to
answer questions.
I am looking forward to starting my Europa about this

Hi,
Strong paint strpper [ Nitromors] will shift the powder coating, use emery
cloth to get to clean steel, then wash the stripper away with a strong
detergent, dry, and finnish with the paint of your choice after welding.
Bead blasting is OK,[but can be costly] sand blasting can make it difficult
for whoever is doing the welding [ grains of sand can ''hang up'' in the pores
created durring the process].
Cheers,
Nev.

Garry,
I really hate to bring it up the subject of air to air photos, but did

Augustene,
No, I never got them. Keith promised me a dozen times, but nothing. I
guess in light of what has transpired, I shouldn't be surprised, but all
things considered I'm much luckier than lots of other folks who may loose
thousands of dollars.
How's the RV coming? I'm really tempted to build an RV-10 kit, as soon as
they come out with a "quick build". On the few cross country, overnight
trips I've taken in my Europa, I find that the baggage capacity, fuel
endurance and general cramped quarters precludes any serious long trips.
You know what they say.........if you want a good two place plane, buy a 4
place one!
I hope all is well with you guys. Looks like I need to find a new home as
my airport is closing on October 1st.
Best regards,
Garry

EGT in cruise should be 1350-1450 for 912s
Do not bother with coolant temperature measurement
Do not use Castrol GPS oil
Pensoil MC oil is fine despite not being listed as semisynthetic
Honda mc semisynthetic oil is also just fine but will never appear in
approved list
TCP additive is fine for engine when using leaded av gas, but it may react
with
plastics in tank or tubing to engine

always start engine at idle to allow function of enrichening circuit

otherwise idle will get desynchronized

Thank you Paul,Duncan,Graham&Ira for your comments on e.g.t's as i have 100
C differences front to rear and was rather concerned with this, the fronts
running around 700 C and the rears around 800 C with side to side ,left and
right within 10-15 degrees so do we put this down to bad distribution of the
mixture. What effects does this have on the efficiency of the engine?More
importantly the poor old pistons ect. Phil George.

Bead blasting is OK it makes the part stronger if done carefully, (by
compression the surface and stretching the inside, oversimplification! )
Grit blasting is dubious.
Graham
-- beadblasting and flappeening are techniques employed when surface
hardening is desired, it is a gentle way of coldworking a metal
surface- but while it hardens the surface, it would also become more
brittle.
Whether an engine mount would benefit from that or not would be
interesting to learn from our resident and always helpful
metallurgist, the good Mr. Housman?

I remain amazed that no-one has yet come up with an add-on for the Rotax
that replaces the carburettors and magnetos with multipoint electronic
injection and electronic ignition. The benefits would seem obvious: better
economy, more power, longer TBO, better starting, etc.
The more I think about it, the more I think the Europa community is big
enough to drive such an exercise. Anyone else interested?

I found exactly the same with the 912 and came to the same conclusion. Time
Rotax gave us fuel injection.
I believe Ellison did a throttle body installation for the 912. I had good
experience with one on a Lycosaurus but haven't heard about any Rotax
installations

On receiving the white envelop, with the UK stamps I thought, ah ha ..
another
expensive Europa newsletter!!!
I soon realised it was another expensive liquidation!!!!
All the best for those claims from builders, sorry to hear it happen.

Subject: | Removing Paint from Engine Mount????? |
--> Europa-List message posted by: "Rob Housman" <RobH@hyperion-ef.com>
Wow, I did not realize that I had such a reputation.
Shot peening a metallic surface indeed creates a "skin" in compression thus
partially countering any applied tensile load, which in turn makes the part
less susceptible to crack propagation. It can also "sort of" close minute
cracks that could lead to failure, in a fashion similar to how drilling a
small hole at the end of a visible crack stops the growth of the crack by
forming a blunt end to the crack (crack propagation is more aggressive when
the crack end is sharp).
In other words, I concur.
However, I am less certain that bead or grit blasting can remove the power
coating on the engine mount, and I don't know enough about the coating to
know if it can be removed chemically, but I do know that it is a mix of
pigment and resin that is cured at elevated temperature, and that suggests,
but is not conclusive, that the resin is an epoxy (or other chemically
cross-linking) system which is not likely to be dissolved easily (if at
all). It definitely chips easily enough though, so beating on the thing
with a spray of glass beads may work after all. I'd certainly try.
Best regards,
Rob Housman

Bead blasting is OK it makes the part stronger if done carefully, (by
compression the surface and stretching the inside, oversimplification! )
Grit blasting is dubious.
Graham
-- beadblasting and flappeening are techniques employed when surface
hardening is desired, it is a gentle way of coldworking a metal
surface- but while it hardens the surface, it would also become more
brittle.
Whether an engine mount would benefit from that or not would be
interesting to learn from our resident and always helpful
metallurgist, the good Mr. Housman?

Oops, that should have read "powder coating" not "power coating."

Duncan and Others planning to visit IOM,
Bryan Allsop and I have looked at the weather and it looks fine for
Saturday, but not for Sunday. If it stays that way, we intend to fly to
Jurby for just Saturday. We plan to arrive before 1100 hrs (1115 latest
accepted) local and return home after the air-show has finished. Why not
join us? If you do, don't forget to do the Special Branch form ASAP.
We could also go to Gloucester on Sunday if you wish.
Best wishes,
William

Thoughts from Mr Wilson,
"Hmmm? I wonder if I can do to these two what I have done to my Europa
customers / suppliers / employees??"
