My engine has done just over 260 hours, and is now 40 hours into its first 50 hr
cycle on the recommended Shell oil.
It has used no oil in those 40 hours - running at 5000 rpm on its CSC controller
for the Arplast prop.

Hi Matt,
Another problem you might be facing is that if the program is accessed and not
configured properly, then the file named TLR.CFG is not in the proper format.
You must erase the file TLR.CFG, and try accessing the program again. The command
at the C> prompt is: erase tlr.cfg, if the program is located at the root
directory, otherwise you must go to the directory where the program and cfg file
is located and type in the erase command

Hello,
I downloaded the new version of testing software for the TCU.
Then I checked the serial numbers (again), and my serial number is above the
need
for a dongle..
I then started my laptop up in DOS mode only..
I turned the TCU on, the turbo warning lights went on then off. But, when
the program
tries to "talk" to the TCU it tells me "Error Serial I/O". The manual says
that its
not talking to the TCU.
I have no idea what version the TCU is. The engine was installed in 1999 -
2000 range.
Any ideas? The serial cable looks fine.. I would have to take the panel out
to get to the TCU.

ah! Okay, well just by luck I happen to have a null modem adapter.
The cable that comes from the TCU.. I did plug it into the back of the
laptop, no extension cable.
So, I will try a Null modem adapter and see if that helps.
Also, I checked inside the cable (from the TCU) and it looked fine.. no
broken connections.
I will try again.. thanks for the advice!

I just set mine up this weekend and had the same issue, serial I/O error.
The cable I had was wired up for a null modem connection where 2 pins were
crossed. Make sure your cable is wired pin for pin.

--> Europa-List message posted by: "Carpenter, Matt" <mcarpenter@concordefs.com>
My EIS 2000 has a "Coolant Temp" readout..
After many hours last night I was able to track down the wire.. it goes no
where.
So, is there a place to add a temp probe to a 914? I went through the
manuals and
I find no place that you can add a probe/use current probe to get water
temps.
The other method would be to only watch the CHT, is that what most 914
owners do?
On a side note.. I tracked down the OAT (also goes to EIS 2000), and found
that it connects
to a small metal piece behind the avionics panel. The other day the temp
was around 95 OAT, and the OAT on the EIS said 95, but after the engine ran
for a bit, it had jumped to 110.. so the OAT probe is picking up heat from
the avionics, and some off the engine. Where SHOULD it be located?
Thanks,
Matt Carpenter

My 912UL engine has done 680 hours in about eight years. I'm using Shell
Advance VSX-4 (synthetic based oil) as recommended, since my unleaded
mogas is occasionally supplemented with 100LL. I suppose the Rotax runs
at an average of 5100-5200RPM in cruise, measured on Skydrives Flydat.
I burn oil, and always have, perhaps a bit more than in the early days.
Useage is within the limits as described in the user manual. I probably
top up every eight weeks or so.
Having said that, I have suffered from the odd leak from places like oil
filter seal and from under the four covers of the cylinder heads, which
has made estimating more difficult.

Richard,
As you know my bird has the same 912s as yours. Difference is that mine does
not consume any noticable amounts of oil. She has done 270 hours using
recomended semi-synthetics.
Until today, I thought that this normal. I would not have thought 1-2 litres
to be normal every 50hours.
No doubt someone will be responding to suggest that using 'no oil' is
something to worry about, but I will worry about that when it happens. Nor
do I have nicotine stains. Cow shit, yes!
There is probably nothing to get too concerned about immediately, but I
would suggest that you keep very careful records of oil/hours from now on to
identify any trends at the earliest. You probably dont need advice as obvious
as that though.
Very best regards. Bryan.G BYSA
PS. Why arent you doing the Six Nations thing?

Jim,
Thanks for your thoughts. We originally set the prop to 19deg, but
during the first runs the aircraft tacho was recording 5500 - 5600 static
which we thought much too high (we had been told by other Europa owners with
the same spec to aim for 21 deg if not 22.) We reset to 21 deg and got
5100 - 5200 static. Several trains of thought have come to light, we can
only monitor and advise of our findings, however we have an Airmaster which
we will install when we are ready - it will be interesting to see what
happens next. Watch this space.

Duncan,
If it has to resonate somewhere, I wish it would resonate off the
end of the wing and leave my engine alone ! However i note your comments.
The resonance only effects this very tight band and has no sign immediately
below or above. We have experienced of late starting problems which we have
put down to fuel, your comment on float bowls might have some bearing - as
before I'll keep the forum posted of any findings.

1) never leave anything loose near engine intake.. A #8 machine screw and

the washer bottomed out on floor of airbox tube leading to carb adapter.
The screw was

Hi Matt,
I have the OAT sensor mounted on the top of the air filter which is directly
in the outside air stream. I am not monitoring coolant but I have two CHT
sensors in place. I have purchased a coolant monitoring kit from SkyDrive
but I am yet to install it.
The other parameter that I would like to monitor is the airbox temperature
but I haven't decided how I am going to do this.

Hi, all --
I remembered doing a trial fit of each "Perspex" originally after kit
delivery, and I recall only modest trimming to be needed. Now one
door's glass has shrunk up to 1/4" in some places. Both are enough to
require rework of the rebates to provide bonding area. They've also
shrunk mostly top/bottom, vs. fore/aft, so rework of the rebate can be
mostly at the top.
I checked the windscreen this A.M., after gathering nerve to do so,
and it has shrunk too, with probable fiberglass rework, even without
smoothing out some unsteady or (non-sober?) cutting by whichever
factory cut it . I bought the kit all at once, and there were sticker
dates on some items in the fuse kit as old as 96-97. So this acrylic
plastic may have seen quite a few birthdays to date, even if newer.
Has anyone encountered this? Maybe someone with a many-year old
Europa may have observed a once nice fit of the door is now no longer
a pretty fit?
Reg,
Fred F.

I put a thermocouple to the outside of the little coolant expansion tank.
A hoseclamp secures it there with a piece of high temp silicone foam. I

Sorry to hear of your misfortune with the windows and windscreen Fred.
Unfortunately, I am unable to offer any explanation or help but . . just
want to say however, that should you have advised us of this problem
earlier, it would have frightened @#$% out of me because my screen and
windows (now installed) were standing on their ends in my shed for over
7 years where the temperature reaches around 50C quite often in summer
time and 0C or below during winter. If yours are made of the same
material as mine, from my very limited experience just sited, it would
seem the problem should not have been caused by temperature - but then
again, what else could it be ??
Just thinking Fred, in view of the fact that it seems to have shrunk in
one direction only, if you place the perspex on a door and press in the
middle, will it not straighten out enough to cover 10mm or so of the
door flange ? Advice I received from Neville Eyre . . . . " ensure you
remove the gel coat from the flanges of the doors to allow the perspex
to sit a little deeper" (flanges originally made for thinner perspex)
This hopefully, may allow you to crib another mm or two as well.
I sympathise with you Fred because I know what the feeling is like. We
don't expect these sorts of problems and it is very frustrating.
Good luck mate.

Hi Fred F.,
Sorry to hear of your situation.
The question in my mind is whether you're dealing with deformation or
shrinkage (?). Perhaps a call to a techie at Roehm & Hass might be useful.
(?)
I'm curious as to whether your plexi is clear or tinted; and whether or not
your ship has spent a lot of time in the hot sun (with or without those
reflective blankets one see's so often.

| Hi, all --|
| I remembered doing a trial fit of each "Perspex" originally after kit
| delivery, and I recall only modest trimming to be needed. Now one
| door's glass has shrunk up to 1/4" in some places. Both are enough to
| require rework of the rebates to provide bonding area. They've also
| shrunk mostly top/bottom, vs. fore/aft, so rework of the rebate can be
| mostly at the top.|
| I checked the windscreen this A.M., after gathering nerve to do so,
| and it has shrunk too, with probable fiberglass rework, even without
| smoothing out some unsteady or (non-sober?) cutting by whichever
| factory cut it . I bought the kit all at once, and there were sticker
| dates on some items in the fuse kit as old as 96-97. So this acrylic
| plastic may have seen quite a few birthdays to date, even if newer.|
| Has anyone encountered this? Maybe someone with a many-year old
| Europa may have observed a once nice fit of the door is now no longer
| a pretty fit? Reg, Fred F.
Yeah, Mebbe, Fred,
Am about to start shaving them to fit. What do you suggest I do?
Should I allow exact fit and hope they don't buckle 'til they shrink? MIne
were issued in 1979 - praps they've already done that?
Cheers, Ferg

Fred,
Did the Perspex shrink, or did the fiberglass move/change. Given my recent
experience with the wings my bet would be on the fiberglass moving.

All
I did a Rocky Mountain water temperature probe in the water collector tub
where the "radiator cap" is. I had a welder put a pad on the side of the tub
that I drilled and taped for an 1/8" pipe thread. I think it is working very
well. As I reported earlier its consistent measurements. Look at this link

(It is midway down on page #11.)

Gee Ferg, you have been building a long time! Did you get the pre
prototype kit ?
In jest.
