We are installing the Blue Mountain EFIS 1. Since Rotax has CHT sensors
on both sets of heads and they specify max CHT, Greg Richter suggested
that we monitor water pressure rather than water temp. This will give a
much quicker notification of a water leak. Plan is to put a boss in the
header tank similar to what Cliff described.

Well, polyester resin is pseudo living tissue, even more so than epoxy
composite, Paul. I did the newer, preferred attachment of the gas
struts, but it has needed weeks to settle out its stress effect. The
fuselage was first SuperFill'd to be flush with the doors; gonna
need little bit more now, where the struts attach to the door. Thus,
one concern was if plexiglass stresses could ruin my nice door fit
over time.
From what I could google, shrinkage in one direction can occur (after
cool down of a molded part) when using acrylic sheet made by some
extrusion processes. But not long term of significance that I could
find. The words residual stress did pop up a lot, stemming from the
molding not done the best way. But you'd think the shop made mine
just like all the others. However, I had to return one to Lakeland
long ago, as the obvious optical defects at the top edge were just
awful.

Thanks for the suggestions, Kinsgley, but they lie flush in the
sans-gelcoat rebates all around nicely. Mine have been stored in
constant temp in what's supposed to be a billiard room, slowly being
reactivated through reduction in parts inventory! It's quite possible
I never noticed the misfit of one glass several years ago, due to
maybe poor factory cut at the top, but it's so obvious. No big deal
fixing the rebate, after all the practice in making the cowlings fit
the way I want; but I hope these fixes will end soon.
One nice thing is minimal handling of the glass to trim them down now.
Breakage and scratching is directly related to availability of a
replacement, you know. Forgetting previous bizarre things done on my
property, my new "neighbor from hell" started felling all his trees,
after stripping most of the gorgeous landscaping last week. One huge
chunk of an 80-foot tree landed in my back yard, shaking the house and
shop like a huge bomb exploded nearby, while I was gently handling one
of the acrylics. Part of my knock-dead wooded view out the back was
the visual effect of his; now Mr. Ignazlo Whatever has cost me about
$5,000 property value, that's all. But I was musing a while back
whether people who would buy the house would think me an oddball for
building an airplane. No concern there.... :-)

may be the odd, unexplainable case. I thought I briefly saw Rod
Serling of the "Twilight Zone" peering into my shop the other day,
though. Couldn't have been my new neighbor -- he didn't have one,

Airbox temp on AUX2..
Where would I find a probe for the airbox? There is a place ready for a

I have the OAT sensor mounted on the top of the air filter which is directly
in the outside air stream. I am not monitoring coolant but I have two CHT
sensors in place. I have purchased a coolant monitoring kit from SkyDrive
but I am yet to install it.
The other parameter that I would like to monitor is the airbox temperature
but I haven't decided how I am going to do this.

bay bulkhead, starboard side. There were two reasons for selecting this
location - 1) Kim Prout, who knows a few things about the aircraft and is my
EAA Technical Advisor, suggested this location because his first Europa was
slightly nose heavy, and 2) the factory's wiring harness has the fat wires
start at that location.

Fred, I have the same vintage aircraft and experienced a similar situation. Having
trimmed the perspex many years ago to the proper fit and just recently bonding
them in. My perspex had curled up, thus when I placed the perspex in the
door frame it was short of the frame by 1/2 or more in some places from top
to bottom. Sideways was pretty close. Not to worry though. Once I applied
some pressure in the center of the perspex it flattened out and everything fit
just has it had all those years before. You might try placing the perspex outside
and letting the sun warm it up so that it will conform better to the frame.
I think it will all work out for you.

Hi, all --
I remembered doing a trial fit of each "Perspex" originally after kit
delivery, and I recall only modest trimming to be needed. Now one
door's glass has shrunk up to 1/4" in some places. Both are enough to
require rework of the rebates to provide bonding area. They've also
shrunk mostly top/bottom, vs. fore/aft, so rework of the rebate can be
mostly at the top.
I checked the windscreen this A.M., after gathering nerve to do so,
and it has shrunk too, with probable fiberglass rework, even without
smoothing out some unsteady or (non-sober?) cutting by whichever
factory cut it . I bought the kit all at once, and there were sticker
dates on some items in the fuse kit as old as 96-97. So this acrylic
plastic may have seen quite a few birthdays to date, even if newer.
Has anyone encountered this? Maybe someone with a many-year old
Europa may have observed a once nice fit of the door is now no longer
a pretty fit?

My Battery is also located behind the baggage bay bulkhead(starboard
side) in fact its about 1 mtr back from the bulkhead. The reason mine is
sighted there is for weight & balance purposes. We calculated that with
a light pilot and empty ( well almost) fuel tank you could actually be
out of balance, but I guess that depends on the weight of your battery.
But I would strongly recommend you do some calculations based on all
possible configurations to determine the optimum placement of the
battery rather that just consider the obvious wiring issues. As you
really don't want to discover what its like to fly "outside the
envelope" believe me especially when you least expect it.

I have got round to fitting an early XS exhaust system, made by Heggemann, p/n
25-00200.
Among the bag of bits with it are two aluminium flanges, such as you might use
to connect ducting, though the flanges on these are formed to a saddle shape to
fit against a cylindrical object.
The manual is silent on the purpose of these and the inventory doesn't help.
Can anyone tell me what these are for ? (Fabricating a hot air duct using the
shroud round the silencer [muffler] perhaps ? )
Also in the bag are 8 all-metal stiffnuts (repalce the manifold stiffnuts
supplied with the engine ?), a few 'pop' rivets and a couple of sachets of what
appears to be an exhaust-temperature assembly paste (no English labelling).
Is the exhaust system itself supposed to be assembled dry ?

The alloy flanges, and pop rivets were for a cabin heat system, to be cut
into the outer skin of the silencer, do not use them, you will get far too hot

to the point of being unbearable].

On a tangent to this discussion, my battery is in the back but I find I
have to trim nose down all the time. My indicator is always in the lower
third of it's range and sometimes right at the stop if fully loaded with
luggage. My empty c of g is 59.53 inches aft of datum. I wondered if
it is worth my while trying moving the battery forward? Anyone tried
this?

If a recombinant gas (RG, AGM) battery is used, besides being much
lighter, they require no sealed, vented compartment. Merely a solid
hold-down arrangement, so they don't come undone in severe turbulence,
etc., and short out, become disconnected, or crack open. They also
can make up for the starting punch lost in the long cable runs.

Yes that's how I arrived at the optimum position for the battery
together with the scientific method of course my empty APS weight is
58.23 so it sounds like yours is further aft before you start to load
anything. Its amazing what a difference moving the battery makes. Alan

have to trim nose down all the time. My indicator is always in the lower
third of it's range and sometimes right at the stop if fully loaded with
luggage. My empty c of g is 59.53 inches aft of datum. I wondered if

baggage bay bulkhead, starboard side. There were two reasons for
selecting this location - 1) Kim Prout, who knows a few things about the
aircraft and is my EAA Technical Advisor, suggested this location
because his first Europa was slightly nose heavy, and 2) the factory's
wiring harness has the fat wires start at that location.

Thanks for the input, Erich. On mine, one side (the older in Perspex
years) sits flush in the rebate all around, and the gap at the top is
a uniform 1/4" - 5/16", the full length. I don't see where pushing
can close the gap except at the center. I 'd prefer not to risk
bonding in stresses in the acrylic if, the rebate still has to be
modified anyway. One reason that crazing can eventually show up.

Richard,
We have found after about 30 weight and balances on Europas, if it is a 914,
the battery goes in the baggage compartment and if it is a 912S, the battery
goes on the firewall. The only thing that may change the cg is having an
S-tek pitch servo on the pitch tube along with a heavy gyro for HSI and
stormscope data box all mounted aft. The battery if a 914 may have to be
mounted on firewall. Knock on wood, we have never had a cg problem with any
Europas whether tri-gear or monowheel even with all the gadgets that are
must have these days.

I managed to shrink some perspex, (plexiglas) but only be heating it to 150
deg. C. It went flat, more or less at that temperature. Since it already
had scribe marks on it that's how I knew it had shrunk. Scrapped it of

I find the water temp very useful. I know how close the thing is to boiling
over. You should like that information. I have no air in the bowl under
the "radiator cap" . My probe is low enough to always be in the water. This
is the hottest water in the system. Works for me !!!!!

Fred,
I too am just on the glass for the doors and the front. The person I bought
my kit from had adjusted the size some and as a result it was under in some
areas and over in others. It mostly fit fairly good. I the corners I filled
in with a little redux and will cover over with filler. On thing to think
about now before you install the panels is the depth of the glass after you
get the redux in. I did not take that into account and will have to do some
careful filing and sanding around the edges where it sits "proud". I was a
problem on the outside handle also, had to bend the handle out a little on
both ends to keep from scratching the glass.

If you just put a 45 degree bevel all around the outside edge of the window
a small amount of superfill makes a good fillet transition all around. It
sure beats the amount of work and weakening involved in trying to get the
whole thing down flush.

I paid $770 for the 3 Perspex items in Light Smoke grey with the Port Side
having Air Vent Flap, all from LP Aero. With transport to UK it was $900.
That was 2 years ago.

Every a/c will be different. My 912S is ideally balanced with an aft battery
mount. Best to leave the battery until everything else has been fitted and
then check the C of G before final placing.
