I subscribed to Pilot about 6 weeks ago but have still not got my
magazine / freebies. (I have got the watch however!). There was a
freebie in Flyer for Old Buckenham for August. Hope to make it and will
bring that voucher along to see if I can stretch a point. I may have to

Hi Y'all
Having been grounded for a week due my mother-in law's 80th birthday (I

Subject: | Rotax 914 Question and other information |
--> Europa-List message posted by: "Carpenter, Matt" <mcarpenter@concordefs.com>
We have owned/flown our A138 for almost 1 year. This entire time I knew
that
something was not right about the engine.. not enough power!
Sure we had no problem taking off, we had no problem going places, but we
had a problem getting over 8000 AGL
and not losing most of our MP!
The problem has been solved!! well.. most of them anyway
The rubber flanges (correct?) connecting the airbox to the Carbs was loose.
So lose in fact I was
able to pull them apart.
The next day (Last Saturday) we finished up on our Oil Mod (lowering down),
then creating a baffle between the
oil and water cooler! Thanks to all the great help/web sites on this info!
The oil temps are running around
220 and CHT at 250 in climb with OAT of 82F. I also changed the bottom
cowling.. I added some fiberglass to help
smooth the airflow. This all worked great!!
We took the plane up for the first time after all our mods, as we advanced
the throttle, we shot past 39, and hit 50 MP
for a few seconds. I pulled power and we stopped to figure out why we had
SO much MP now.. well the turbo was working.. and it had never worked
before! We then took off, keeping 39MP, then few around a bit at 35MP.. wow
what a difference it made. In the past we never got past 34MP.
Now for the question..
Our throttle has always gone to the floor to get 34MP, we its only half way.
Is this correct? I have tried to connect the TCU up to my laptop with no
success. I have engine serial #4425662, and that should work with out a
dongle.
I plan on making some humps for 100% and 115% on the throttle. Also, we I
keep pushing the throttle, it will go way over boost. In fact the 50"MP is
with the throttle at the 3/4 way to the full stop. Is the wastgate not
working? I can see it move when the TCU first comes on.
One other thing. We flew around for about 20 mins, at 5400RPM, 35"MP.. the
WARN light begin to flash. When we pulled
power back to around 31-32"MP, the light would stop. Okay, the manual says
I can run at 35"MP and 5400RPM all the time.
Any ideas on that?
Thanks!

No idea if the MP and tech are calibrated at this time.
That is something that I am going to look into this week.
We assumed they were done correctly, but have no idea really.

Hi,

I don't know anything about 914s but I do know that the standard Rotax
analog tachos are notoriously inaccurate. They often misread by more
than 400 RPM.
A person I know (who shall remain nameless) who has a 912S discovered
that their Rotax tacho was under-reading by 600RPM! Says something
about the durability of Rotax engines!!!
Blatant plug: If you buy a Smart Avionics constant speed controller
(www.smartavionics.com), you get an accurate digital tacho with
percentage power display that will work just dandy with a 914. It
takes the same amount of panel space as the Rotax bogo-tachometer.

Mark

I have a Grand Rapids EIS 2000 for RPM, MP, and all Temps..
It has worked great.. now the question is.. is it reading it correctly?
I need to get the TCU software working so that I can compare readings.

What have you done to cover the look of the Redux behind
the glass. Doesn't look the greatest . Maybe some kind
of tape or fill over and paint.

You need to carry the paint onto the plexiglass, a little past where the
fiber glass structure (and redux) end. This is to protect the structure
and redux from UV damage.

Al,
Fill any gaps then mask up to the line of the door frame inside the
glass and paint over the half inch or so of glass as you paint the doors
to cover the area where you can see the redux. But make sure you lightly
abrade the edge of the glass you are going to paint over to provide a
'key' then clean it off thoroughly. I don't think I cleaned mine off
well enough as my paint is peeling up from a few places around the edge
where I painted over the glass.

I'd second that recommendation to check the Rotax tacho. We had one
owner here who, as it turned out, had been overrevving his 914 by 1200+
RPM for eighteen months due to a miscalibrated tacho. If he had EGT
gauges he would have realised earlier that his engine was being fried
but the plane had been build with the minimum of engine instrumentation.
When we stripped the engine down it was a far from pretty sight inside
with valve burn, annealed pistons and an extremely soft cylinder head.
With a few 1000 dollars thrown into replacement parts the engine
performed like new when I test flew it and it's been behaving well ever
since.

What type of brake fluid are you using. I am using the silicone brake fluid
based on John Hurst's recommendation and now I am wondering if it might have

I can confirm you can start a 912 by hand. I have done so - by accident
!
Scenario:
Europa undergoing maintenance, dashboard removed, hence ignition not
earthed. We were performing a compression check with a compression
pressure gauge (as opposed to a leakdown test)
My engineer friend volunteered me to turn the prop saying "the ignition
unit shouldn't generate a spark until 200 rpm is reached". Boy was I
glad I treated the engine as live !!!

If you don't an engine start with a flat aircraft battery will not be
possible as you cannot hand crank a Rotax."
Over the past three months I have spoken to two pilots who have hand
started
their 912 equipped aircraft.
I truly believe both of them.
One of them found that the rising tide was a great incentive !!
He landed on a beach to assist another microlight. When he came to
restart
the engine the battery was flat and the waves were only a few metres
away.
So he hand started it and saved the day !
He tells me he had done this previously and was surprised when I told it
could not be done !!!

noted that after the aircraft has been painted and over time a small crack
in the paint along this interface occurs almost without fail. With all the
planes they have done they say that this is the hot setup.

I was planning, since gelcoat down to sort of black has been removed,
to add a few drops of black epoxy tint to the Redux. Brush on a thin
skim coat in the rebate, and then fully bond with tinted Redux few
hours later. The resulting black border solves the paint
border/filler cracking problem, and a similar technique looks really
good on Grumman AA-x series aircraft, where they attach the windshield
to a metal bow. You paint the bow black; paint the plexiglass inside
border black; then affix with black RTV. I can't get to it for a
while, with some corporate tax clients due 9/15. But if anyone wants
to try it first, I won't mind the feedback! :-)
