good for it.
Please give me at least 24 hours notice though, and avoid Thursday.

I think there should be a statement about Europa
next week as its now in the hands of a new owner. I am not involved so
I'll leave the official announcement to the new owner who I think will
have the best interests of Europa at heart, so things should start to
look up from now on.
Cheers for Now

I need a short flight to prove my oil cooler "viton O Rings" are AOK

will seem strange having a short flight !
So I just may be able to meet you at Sherburn. Watch out for the nearby

Hi fellow Europa builders,
I just got my creditors questionnaire from Redman Nichols. They request the
amount of the open claim. The only items (beside the complete fire wall
forward package) I am missing, like many others too, is the Plexiglas and I
have a value for those. The other outstanding item is my instrument module.
Somebody else is lucky and got mine after I send instrument module to
Lakeland in march for an exchange towards the trigear version.
Now my question. Does anybody know the fair value of the instrument module?
I know Flight Crafters used to have a price for their full instrument module
on their old website but the new one does not offer one anymore. Bob Berube,
maybe can you give me a quote?

Hi, Alan,
Ahhh... the tactful approach :-)
AGM was interesting - lots of debate about compulsory membership of
co-owners and about the Rally offerings. Someone let a Rottweiler loose when
it came to a debate on charging for type approvals, though :-)
Election results are not out until Wednesday - because of the fear of
nay-sayers, the PFA are paying for the Electoral Reform Society to do the
count at a cost of about 1500 quid. My personal opinion is that 1500 quid
would be better spent on bullets for the nay-sayers....
Also looking forward to a new, revived, dynamic, LEAN and EFFECTIVE Europa -
although I don't know of the new owner's plans yet.
Cheers,
Jeremy

pushing home the point about them wasting OUR money, also I think the
editors desk column in this months issue of popular flying was a little
"unsubtle" offering thanks to SFB photography for there "excellent
results" wonder if people know who SFB is ???
Anyway good luck with the election.

Hi, Alan,
Ahhh... the tactful approach :-)
AGM was interesting - lots of debate about compulsory membership of
co-owners and about the Rally offerings. Someone let a Rottweiler loose
when it came to a debate on charging for type approvals, though :-)
Election results are not out until Wednesday - because of the fear of
nay-sayers, the PFA are paying for the Electoral Reform Society to do
the count at a cost of about 1500 quid. My personal opinion is that 1500
quid would be better spent on bullets for the nay-sayers....
Also looking forward to a new, revived, dynamic, LEAN and EFFECTIVE
Europa - although I don't know of the new owner's plans yet.
Cheers,
Jeremy

Hi Jeremy
Can I ask her to supply that info directly please :-)
Sorry I couldn't make it to the AGM on Saturday we were closed in with
the weather, how did you do, were you elected? I presume you have now
heard about the new owner of Europa. Hopefully things will now start to
get back to normal and we can all breath a sigh of relief at a new more
focussed management. Cheers

Thanks, Alan. Believe me, my thoughts on how to do the count have already
been made clear :-) I understand and respect why they took that decision
and, given the issues over the last few years, I think it's understandable
that a more robust approach wasn't taken. I just disagree with it not being
more robust and would very much have preferred the EC to have stood up to
any nay-sayers very firmly indeed. My first response to such people would be
"why arent you a candidate for the EC, then?".
Perhaps the change to a fresh EC with new folks sans battle-scars will be
beneficial in this area? It will certainly be beneficial in other areas.
I also suspect they were caught between a rock and a hard place on that one
- hence they used 'SFB Photographic' instead of the individual's name...
Cheers,
Jeremy

As I live in Phoenix where the temps during the summer is 105-115F we don't
have to stick the sticky stuff in boiling water to heat up, just open the
garage. I have a harder time with the stuff being to runny due to the heat.
Wish it was like winter all year round. And yes it is the wanabe place for

Well, I have been busy this holiday weekend in my shop prepping to bond this
module in next week. Actually took an extra day of vacation Friday to spend
in the shop.
I think by end of day today I'll be comfortable enough to set this baby in.
I have a hoist and will buy a strap come along today for the area around the
head rests.
Naturally... I have questions. John Eckell wrote the he and Steve used about
600 grams of Araldite < weight without hardener for the module.>
That close to what everyone else experienced?
They also used about 120 #8 X 1/2 sheet metal screws to pull this thing
together. That's a lot!
How do you get them to release from the Araldite after cure?
Someone mentioned a lot of dimpling from the screws after cure? Anyone have a
fix for that?
I understand the bright light shining under the canoe to check for voids.
What method do you use to fill the voids if found?
Thanks in advance

Brian,
I found the dimpling caused by the screws were a significant effort to fill
and sand because a lot of that area is made up of compound curves. Quite
frankly I wish I had never done it.
Tony Renshaw has recently installed his cockpit module, I suggest you
contact him for some best practices.

Brian,
Having just done this the other week, a few suggestions:
1) Mix well more than 600g - I'd suggest over 1kg - and be prepared to throw
lots away after you've scraped round. The more you throw away, the less it
weights... :-) The more you pile on to begin with, the less voids you get.
2) Weights and straps should be about all you need - I did some rivets and
screws and have a number of dimples. So instead of weight inside fuse where
the big gaps are, I'll have it outside instead, in the form of filler. And
that means more work.
3) Screws will release OK - particularly if dipped in wax or petroleum jelly
as release agent before use
4) Move quickly - as quickly as you can without being hasty. That stuff goes
off quick.
5) Paint the CM with neat Araldite. Pile the Araldite+flox onto the bonding
areas you've previously marked on the canoe. Prop the canoe slightly open
while you lower the CM in. Add weights, fill gaps, then scrape and wipe with
an acetone rag. Finally check everything with the light.
6) I filled my voids using a syringe with rubber tube on the end, a 1/16"
drill bit to put a hole at each end of the void, and neat Araldite as the
substance to be injected.
If you can have a composite-knowledgeable friend helping you, it'll be worth
the beer you have to buy him tenfold.
Cheers,
Jeremy

Vaughn,
We got builders insurance from Avemco. I'm not sure they still sell it for
a Europa. If not, I think Falcon thru EAA will.
As for transport, perhaps your auto insurance will cover it. Just use some
vehicle other than your hot rod Fiero and be careful!!

Hi Brian,
120 #8 X 1/2, is about the amount I used. No problem to release them
afterwards. I took mine out after two days cure.
600 grams of Araldite sounds right, have some more standing by and make
100 grams batches. I did prepare 8 set of "cryptonite" unmixed. I.e 420,
hardner and flox in separate mixing pots and when needed an assistance
mixed them together.
VERY IMPORTANT: The module must be as far forward as possible. You probably
have to file both the fuselage and the module in order to have them flush.
If not you will have problem when you are installing the FL15
for the flaps. I have 1 mm space between FL15 and the Cockpit module when
flaps are in up position.
Good luck,
Stephan

There will be good dimpling in some places if you glomp down the
screws enough, but I don't see what's achieved structurally. If a
line of fasteners gently snugged didn't cause a section of flange to
fit tighter and push enough glue out to be worth it, I just stopped.
I used 1/8" aluminum pop rivets, but gently squeezed and resqueezed
only enough to see it accomplishing anything or not, and w/o breaking
the mandrel. After cure, drive the mandrels inside the cabin, then
drill off the head and pull the rivets out from the inside. 1/2" or
5/8" long rivets made it easy to extract. I used only about 30
rivets, but recall many of those did nothing but provide a dimple to
put some SuperFill for the pure fun of it!

Brian,
I only used a couple of screws to ensure that the module was correctly
positioned. To pull it into place I used 6 or 8 webbing straps (salvaged
seat belts from scrap cars) wrapped around the fuselage and over some
timber pieces strategically place on the headrests and the tunnel in the
module. I used the 'spanish windlass' technique to tension the straps.
(a length of timber with the strap twisted round). I also used the same
straps and technique to hold my windows whilst they were glued into
place.
Can email pic's if required.

They also used about 120 #8 X 1/2 sheet metal screws to pull this thing
together. That's a lot!
How do you get them to release from the Araldite after cure?
Someone mentioned a lot of dimpling from the screws after cure? Anyone have a fix
for that?
I understand the bright light shining under the canoe to check for voids.
What method do you use to fill the voids if found?

Hi Brian,
That's about the number of screws. In the american system of measure I think its
a "butt load", this has a direct relation to the amount of dimples you'll have
to fill.
The screws release easily with a screw gun in reverse. You don't have to treat
them.
If you search the list archive:
http://www.geocities.com/asarangan/europa_forum.html
I think you'll find some postings on installing without dimpling, I think it would
be easier to fill the dimples. Easy for me to say, I haven't filled them
yet.
The bright light trick works great. One word of caution in some places where the
fit is prefect there is very little glue, and this is good. You need to add
where there is an air gap. We filled the voids using a syringe with redux. One
with a light mix of flox and one with no flox for tight places. Drill a small
hole for glue inlet and at the other end of the bubble one for air out let.
Inject and then cover the holes with a tab of duct tape.
Later,
Steved

Hi Brian,
Can't remember precisely how much Redux we used but we certainly did not use
120 screws as there is no need.
If you mark out on the fuz where to put the glue and use a icing cake
dispenser to put the glue in the right place, you can set the module down
and use cleecos as necessary to pull the surfaces together. You can see the
voids very easily by shining a bright light under the fuz. If you have any
just poke the Redux into the spaces or drill holes in the module and inject
some in. We didn't use any screws or rivets at all, just cleecos.
We also had some help from somebody who had done it before thankfully.
Put a strap around the headrests to pull the sides together. It worked a
treat for us.
You really need a couple of glue mixers, somebody to do the icing and
somebody to get the beers!

We got builders insurance from Avemco. I'm not sure they still sell it for

As for transport, perhaps your auto insurance will cover it. Just use some

Use large washers with the sheet metal screws and remove the screws again before

Well, I have been busy this holiday weekend in my shop prepping to bond this

I think by end of day today I'll be comfortable enough to set this baby in.
I have a hoist and will buy a strap come along today for the area around the
head rests.
Naturally... I have questions. John Eckell wrote the he and Steve used about
600 grams of Araldite weight without hardener for the module.
That close to what everyone else experienced?

Hi! Brian
Redux both components then trowel off the excess when the two are placed
together and trowel it into any voids seen by use of the light underneath or
behind the joint. Don't penny pinch you only get one go at it. and a bit of
Redux wasted isn't worth the cost of doing remedial works. Also the amount
additional you use will be less than having to fill with unstructural filler
on the outside of the fuselage. IMHO the screws or cleco's are ok but for
alignment NOT pulling together and getting dimples everywhere.

I really don't know what they are worth the control surfaces all layed up but
not finished.
I guess they should be worth what europa was asking ? Maybe I should put them up

My plan if I sell them is to buy a light sport aircraft and I'll need 15 to 20
thousand for that.

Hey folks, I double checked and Matt Dralle's earlier post says it's OK to post
about new
aviation products as long as the message doesn't come off as having a "flavor"of
"traditional spam". Don't worry I'm not going to try to sell you anythingthat
supposedly makes any of your body parts larger (or smaller) and this productis
directly aviation related :) I'm just an airplane builder, owner, pilot, and
aviation nut who wants to tell you where you can find more information abouta
great new product.
I've been selling kits of vortex generators (VG's) for only $95 and my customers are telling me they really like the performance gains they're seeing. VG's are great for reducing stall speeds and allow you to land slower, shorter, and safer. I invite you to check out my site at www.landshorter.com and see what you think. My VG's can be quickly installed for testing using removable double-stick tape and come with a 100% money-back guarantee so why not try them out on your plane? You'll be really glad you did :)Thanks and let's keep 'em flying!
Joa Harrison The VG Guy www.landshorter.com
Hi Joa,
I understand your enthusiasm in trying to sell your product by circulating to all
the Matronics lists but are you aware that the Europa wing is designed for
cruise speed laminar flow ? My understanding of VG's and laminar flow wings is
that they are incompatible. I think it would be wise for you first to conduct
an evaluation trial on a Europa and then, if it is succesful over the whole flight
envelope, owners might be interested to see your results. Alternatively,
if you can obtain an endorsement from the wing designer, Don Dykins BSc, CEng,
FRAeS, I am sure that you would get a lot of interest from the Europa community.
In the meantime, I suggest that Europa owners are very cautious before they start
changing the aerodynamics of a very sophisticated and carefully designed aircraft
which I understand was fully flight tested and complies with the JAR 23
regulations. VG's could bite you with the law of unintended consequences.
Cheers, John

Valid point. VGs aren't for every airfoil though depending on the mission of the
aircraft they can benefit even a laminar wing (some pilots desire all the short
field performance or slow speed safety they can get).
Keep in mind that VG's are also very useful for increasing tail effectiveness (either
rudder or elevator) and also for controlling local flow (for faster cruise
speeds). Check out...
http://www.cafefoundation.org/research.htm and go to the flow control articles.
Also, I fully agree that any time a mod is done to a plane that it be done *very*
carefully and methodically. Fortunately the *careful* installation of VGs
offers fairly straightforward results (and is relatively low risk) though it can
lead to problems if pilots don't understand proper flight testing procedures
and what is happening to the flight characteristics as VG's allow the wing to
fly slower and at a higher angle of attack. For instance it is very possible
to get a wing to fly so slow that the pilot gets behind the power curve. This
can cause real problems if not anticipated. It's also important for the pilot
to understand that if the stall speed is lowered so is the Va (maneuvering)
speed therefore they need to compensate in rough air.
Thanks for the info John. Good stuff.

Dan, Roger,
I also had to call the administrator. Just dial from the US 01144 1377
257788 and ask for Stephanie Coulter. She will ask for your address and then
send you the claim form. Sorry, no Email form.

Thanks Phil,
at current I am not in desperate need of one. I just want to make sure that
the paper trail is done correctly. Actually I am somehow surprised that
Redman Nichols did not know about that there are many builders in the US
awaiting parts they have paid for.
I wonder if builders everywhere else have been notified by Redman Nichols.
What are builder doing if they have no access to this forum?
I still hope that Europa gets back on their feet and will eventually deliver
all outstanding parts to all of us builder. At the end I need the whole
firewall forward package at a later (much later I am afraid) date as many of
us do. The good think is that for the firewall forward package there is
always the option to go with the Jaribu FWF package. But to be honest and by
no offense, that would be my second choice.

A number of DOTHers have expressed an interest in the "Last of the Summer Wine",
end of season, long weekend trip to France, so I am suggesting we might like
to arrange it for Thursday 23rd to Sunday 26th September. Last year we chased
the good weather and visited Chauvigny, Bergerac, Ill-Doleron, and Honfleur.
Most enjoyable with lots of summer wine.
If anybody is interested, please drop me a line, or phone on 01495 785 499.
Best wishes,
William

Subject: | Putting in the cockpit module ( not me, you ) |
--> Europa-List message posted by: tonyrenshaw@optusnet.com.au
Gidday Brian,
Firstly, forget how much Araldite!! More is better I promise you. Use the light,
immediately, and keep the redux runny. You need flox on the floor of the boat,
but only
a smidgen. If it changes colour it is too much. You need 3 people, believe me.
I had
only one helper, and I needed 2. It is inevitable you will get bubbles. Think about
it, a 1
inch flange lowered onto a bed of redux will enevitably trap air. Look at my photos
where yours reside. Use a tongue depressor with a flattened, square end and work
the
redux into the joints that the trouble light higlights. I didn't use the light
at the time
which is an inexcusable mistake. I was believing I had a good bond because the
redux
could be seen through the flange, but this could only be the primed redux prior
to you
placing the module. There is only 4 areas that matter when you spatular in more
redux, near the tufnol flight control bearings. The rest is worth working it in,
which
means you inevitably will end up with it oozing out the back into areas you can't
get to.
Forget it, and don't let anyone tell you different. If you don't........look at
my photos.
You'll then need to recover from your depression, then drill and inject pure redux
into
the voids, at all times knowing you are bonding pure redux onto 2 surfaces that
have
already been primed with redux and gone off creating a void that you are now filling.
Don't do it, just spatula enough in to make sure you have a wet joint, completely.
Read
my summary after I did mine. I haven't read of a stuffup on the list, but I know
of
several, and it seems people don't want to own up to what is one of the hardest
parts
of the build to do well, and the consequent, less than perfect outcomes. A good
result
is one where redux flies around the workshop and no effort is made in knowing exactly
how much you mix up. Get a new can and "who really gives" if you use most of it.
I
did. Some use 350 grams. Clever aren't they. I probably used 500 grams, but I had
plenty left over in cups afterwards. Don't worry about it!! Lose a kg, fit into
those tight
trousers again is my suggestion. You definitely don't need to worry about weight
as
you will only get one shot at this. Have I made myself clear. Read my summary post
as I probably said something different than above, but if you stuff it up now,
well you
were warned. 3 people minimum, 1 new tub of redux and no intention of worrying
about
how much is used, work quickly, use little flox and certainly not enough to change
the
colour of the redux to aqua, the light and the spatula/chisel ended tongue depressor.
Hope this all helps, and if you disagree with me, well then you are a better builder
and
I know there are probably some out there, but I reckon you will be advising badly
to
another builder who's workmanship may not be up to your standard, and what I have
recommended above at the very most will only add weight.
Happy building.
