--> Europa-List message posted by: "Pete Lawless" <pete@lawless.info> Hi Steve Yes it is very good. I have one on my Classic on a 912UL (80bhp). Cruise is 120kts to 125kts indicated at 4,200 rpm. I get the full 5,800 on take off so off the runway and climb performance are good too. Around 900 fpm when solo and 600 to 700 with a passenger. Fuel burn around 15 litres (3.96 small gallons) per hour. Considerably better than my Twin Com! The prop uses Warp Drive blades. There has been a problem getting spares in the last few weeks. Warp Drive were 10 weeks behind with delivery! I knocked a blade off on a concrete farm road in July and am still waiting for a replacement. The good thing is that the hub is so strongly built that there was no damage. My PFA (UK for EAA) inspector tells me he has never seen a NSI hub damaged by a prop strike and he probably has had more to do with NSI than most in the UK. NSI do get a lot of bad press re customer service. They are a bit vague regarding responses to email and telephone, but this seems to be when there is nothing to tell. For example the Warp Drive delivery issue, having said they were awaiting a delivery we could then get nothing more from them and I eventually check with Warp Drive direct. Hopefully we will have a serviceable aeroplane by the end of the month. Subject: Tri gear Brake Problems
--> Europa-List message posted by: "Alan Burrows" <alan@kestrel-insurance.com> Thanks Karl I am "almost" in the U.K. as I'm in the Isle of Man, but we do have a B&Q so I guess that must qualify us :-) Alan -----Original Message----- From: owner-europa-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-europa-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of KARL HEINDL Subject: RE: Europa-List: Tri gear Brake Problems --> Europa-List message posted by: "KARL HEINDL" <kheindl@msn.com> Alan, I assumed that you had the dual master cylinder that comes with the fingerbrakes kit. If you have the original supplied cylinders then my solution does not apply. I used springs which wereleftovers from one of the kits. I have no idea what they were for (like lots of other little bits) and Am not sure of the part number, something like FL26. The ends had to be cut off and they should be shorter than the existing springs. They work fine but I would like a slightly more robust spring with a larger diameter. I have bought a couple in a hardware store recently and will try them out next time I need to dismantle the cylinders. I assume that you are in the UK. There is a big spring manufacturer in Bristol, can't remember the name. Also, B@Q may have a selection in their section with all the little drawers. Karl From: "Alan Burrows" alan@kestrel-insurance.com Subject: RE: Europa-List: Tri gear Brake Problems -- Europa-List message posted by: "Alan Burrows" alan@kestrel-insurance.com Firstly I am no expert on the subject of brakes, but I don't understand why my brakes would free up when moving the parking brake lever backwards and forwards a few times, because to me it seems a different problem to yours. Incidentally I also had problems with the levers not returning fully, but just put up with that. Where did you get your extra springs from and are they anything special? Alan -----Original Message----- From: owner-europa-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-europa-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of KARL HEINDL Subject: RE: Europa-List: Tri gear Brake Problems -- Europa-List message posted by: "KARL HEINDL" kheindl@msn.com Alan, Some of us had problems with the rubber seals in the master cylinder not returning to their null position due to excessive friction. I overcame this problem simply by re-enforcing the springs with an additional spring inside the existing one. Others have changed seals, brake fluid etc. By the way, Matco informed me that the wheels and brakes are the same models as used on Spaceship One. I wonder which master cylinder was used by Rutan. Also, what is used on the Liberty, which has finger brakes like most of us. Karl From: "Alan Burrows" alan@kestrel-insurance.com Subject: Europa-List: Tri gear Brake Problems -- Europa-List message posted by: "Alan Burrows" alan@kestrel-insurance.com Hi Guys Yesterday I was due to fly to Prestwick and as I taxied around to the runway, in 38kts of wind the aircraft locked the port wheel when I applied a good amount of pressure to the finger brakes, trying to turn a corner against the wind. Now this aint funny at a busy commercial airport in driving wind and rain..! The brake was locked on solid and the only way to free it was to remove the spats and slacken the bleed nipple to release enough pressure to allow the piston to be pushed back into the calliper. When I eventually made it back into the hanger I applied the brakes again with the same result. Each time I use any force on the lever it locks up the port brake. I discovered that if I rock the parking brake lever backwards and forwards several times it does free off the locked brake, so I guess the problem lies in there somewhere. I will know more when I strip it all down. But in the meantime if anyone has any suspicions of the levers feeling unusual or not returning properly BE CAREFUL the next stage may be a lock up as I experienced in the worst possible conditions. I suggest you give your levers a real hard pull just to make sure they don't lock on..! I will publish more when I have some diagnosis. Cheers for Now Alan G-CBWF == direct advertising on the Matronics Forums. == == == == direct advertising on the Matronics Forums. == == ==

    From: nigelcharles@tiscali.co.uk
    Subject: Propellers NSI CAP 140
--> Europa-List message posted by: nigelcharles@tiscali.co.uk I used one for 25 hrs when it was grounded due to the 912S/NSI combination proving unsuitable without modification. One of our UK owners had a crack at a blade root after 250hrs and the extra torsional load of the higher compression 912S found a weakness in a sharp corner in the blade root (not ideal design). Since then there has been another failure (on a different a/c type). Whether this was a modified prop or not is not certain. If it wasn't modified then why hasn't the owner been notified by NSI to get it modified? If it was modified then it begs the question whether the NSI is suitable for the 912S at all. The prop comes without low pitch stop adjustment. This is achieved by placing a spacer in the rear of the hub. I had several spacers made up of different thicknesses so that the correct size could be determined. The only problem was that the prop had to be taken apart for each spacer to be inserted. This cannot be done on the a/c. As you can imagine I got quite good at this but it still took at least 2 hours each time. All this just to change the stop setting. It is extremely easy to damage parts when re-assembling the prop hub. However once set you should not have to do it again. As far as I know, unlike the other manufacturers, NSI have yet to develop a constant speed controller which eases pilot workload and improves performance. I have first hand knowledge of their poor customer relations and the UK representative (who happens to be my inspector) has given up with them due to their poor communications and slow deliveries. Smart Avionics (www.smartavionics.com) produces a constant speed controller (the CSC-1/G) that is suitable for electric VP props like the NSI or the Rospeller. Given the commercial nature of this message, I may as well mention that Smart Avionics has recently started producing a low-cost dynamic propeller balancer kit aimed at the homebuilt/experimental market. Ok, no more commercials from me (at least until the next product arrives!) Mark

However, it's possible that the substance used may harden with continuous vibration, so apologies for questionable advice. OTOH, you may want to keep spares in case that's true for your solution! Cheers Ferg PS Let me know how it works out, me ditto.
