hello ,
not sure if this is any use to you but i find it very difficult if not
impossible to rig
pushing both pip pin and stb allen bolt in at the same time ( ie. both into the
port spar then both into
the stb spar ) but , if i push the port pin fully in to lock first ( with little
effort) , the stb allen bolt then
goes in all the way very easily ! ( they then have to be removed vise versa )
yours confused !

Me too... Only I broke the handle off when disassembling after setting
the wings. Maybe 4th disassemble. Same skinned knuckles. Very tight
fit. I think I need to remove a bit more material from the round ends
of the spars. They are too tight in the sockets.
In any case, I too need a replacement port spar pip-pin and would
prefer one with a "T" handle rather than the Europa supplied "L"
handle.
Would someone from Europa please reply? Andy?
Aircraft Spruce has smaller 1/4" quick release pins in stock. They say
"Request quote on special sizes (25 piece minimum)." See page 105 in
the latest, 2004/2005 Catalog. If there is interest, I will call them
for a quote on the minimum order and let the list know their reply.

I you do locate one with a "T" handle I'd be interested. Even after 95
flying hours my pins are a real pain to get in. Putting the wings on can
take two people over 30 minutes on my aircraft.

Hi! Paul, Raimo and Others.
I assemble and dismantle mine every time I fly unless I'm on a long trip.
The wings can only be assembled by myself by putting the starboard lift pin
in , port lift pin in then starboard spar 1/2" pip pin and finally the port
1/2" pip pin. I use a rubber mallet to knock both well oiled large pip pins
into place but after breaking the one I am careful to hit only the central
part of the handle NOT the lever part. I can if I rush assemble on my own in
20 minutes including removal of the a/c and wings from the trailer (Trike)

Hi Raimo,
not sure if that will help you. McMaster Carr in the US sells both , the L
and T style, pip pins. You can find them at http://www.mcmaster.com/ and
search for "Push-Button Quick-Release Pins " or even better look for the
page 3088.
Hope this helps.

The ACS pins appear to have a "T" handle.
I have called ACS and requested a quote for 25 1/2" pins with a 3 1/2"
grip length. They say they will call as soon as they have the costing.
I will post their reply when I receive it.
Michael,
Yes, I should have thought of looking at McMaster-Carr. They have
EVERYTHING... I'll check with them as well.

Raimo, Rob, Paul, et.al.,
I went through the McMaster-Carr catalog. They have a heavy Duty
Ring-Grip Quick-Release Pin in 1/2" Diameter with double ball
retainment. It has a "T" handle. They are not available in the 3 1/2"
grip length that we require, but they do have them in 4" length. The
specs are:
Stainless Steel, Plain, Precipitation-Hardened Stainless Steel,
Quick-Release Pins, Inch, 1/2" -.005"--.002", 4" grip length +.020",
MIL-P-45952/1, 18,400 lbs.
The cost is $9.41 each.
You'd have to make up a 1/2" sleeve or stack washers to accommodate the
additional length. I don't know if this is acceptable or not.
Andy or Neville? Comments, suggestions, recommendations, can it be
used?
Still waiting on ACS...
Good building & Great Flying,
Bob Borger

To All,
McMaster Carr Catalog:
A 1/2" T Handle with a 3 1/2" working length w/o lanyard p/n 90293A316 costs
$24.29 ea plus shipping.
The same part in a "L" handle costs $33.27 p/n 90302A415
Also, I thought that some builders, in order to relieve the stress of
inserting and removing these two pins, were heating up the assembled setup (both
wings and the CM) in order to temporarily soften the epoxy and realign all three
bushings for smoother use? Or did I mix something up?

Bob,
Checking pg 3088 of McMaster catalogue I find part # 90293A415 which is a
"T" handle pip pin of 1/2" Dia. of 31/2" grip range at$29.30 ea.

(Apologies to the non-UK folks to whom this is not relevant - please delete
and enjoy doing so!)
It's the next PFA EC Meeting tomorrow night, and Engineering matters will
arise. In recent times I've been told that:
1) uncomplicated (i.e. no new executed mods included) permit renewals
are being processed within 1 working day
2) (although not applicable to most of us here) good progress has been
made with new type approvals
3) the mods backlog is down to 3 weeks to get a response (other than
the acknowledgement)
From my own build I have significant doubts about item 3) above, so I'd like
to gather some data to check what I'm hearing.
If you've got issues with any of the above (e.g. permit renewal taking 3
weeks, or waiting 3 months for response on a mod), could you please send me
brief details in a private email. But please, if the delay is at your end
(you've not responded to a request for more info, or you've included
executed mods with your renewal, for example), please don't send me info
attributing that to Engineering - I'm after hard-and-fast cases!
Thanks and regards,
Jeremy

I think you will find that the 1/2" x 3 1/2" version is a "single ball"
pin. Our application requires a "two ball" pin.
OK guys, no further "ball" comments necessary. Lets keep our focus on
our aircraft and construction...
BTW, I have ordered two of the 1/2" x 4" heavy duty pins from
McMaster-Carr and will provide comments on them once they arrive.

Fred,
I don't have a catalog, I'm working on-line with the search function.
I guess I should have requested to view the catalog page.
I'll have to go back and see if I can get more detail than the very
short blurb on the search results page.
I guess I need to request a catalog from McMaster-Carr. I think I have
bought enough stuff from them to justify a catalog.
Those two pins may be suitable. At $57.08 they darned well should be
anyway.

To All:
To sum up, looking at McMaster-Carr catalogue pg. 3088, you find a picture
of the aluminum "T" handle type "G" quick release pin; this APPEARS to be
EXACTLY like that supplied w/ kit. Going to pg. 3089, you find part
#90293A415 which is a "T" handle pip pin w/ 2 balls of 1/2" Dia. w/ 3 1/2"
grip range at $29.30 ea.
Also, because of the postings telling of the use of hammers to remove and
insert pins, one may be interested in a heavy duty 2 ball quick release pin,
part #90980A555 which has a welded steel "T" handle at $57.08 each, a 1/2"
pin which has a 3 1/2" usable length.
Happy building,
Fred

I was abel to see a finished Europa here in Phoenix this weekend and observed one
of the cleanest and easiest pip-pin arrangements I've seen to date. The hole
in the stabilator was only
about 3/4" with a large set screw to cover when installed. To get it in and out
a tool was made with a t-handle. It had approximately 6" blade that tapered
to the end and then a turn at the end, flat on top and bottom. The rings were
pulled out of the pip-pin and the tool was used to put in and pull out(being inserted
into the ring hole). Very simple and effective. Eliminates the "OOP!*
(*&#@'s. You can put in with the tool and extract (the hole is just large enough
to put tool and your finger to push the plunger).

I agree completely. Either of those is what we want.

To All who have thought today Pins w/Balls!
Yesterday night I was almost despair of my spar pip-pin.
Today I learned at least thinks as follows and can be happy also:
1) Obviously I managed to stir the ant hill.
2) I am not alone with tight spar bushes installation.
3) I am not the only one who managed to broke his pip-pin.
4) World is full off all kind of pins who only want to come to daddy.
5) There is maybe an order which is the best way to insert those pins.
6) I have to reposition my slightly conical washer whis is bonded on the port spar
socket.
7) I have to remove some material from the tip of the stbd spar (to get it deeper
to the socket).
8) The distance between my bushes are slightly different in the spars.
- I have to reposition one bush or/and enlarge it by reamer (carefully!)
9) My original (and now with broken handle) pip-pin shank was oval shaped and too
fat
- diameter varies from 0,495" to 0,517" = 12,573 mm - 13,132 mm
10) Europa Net People are fantastic and fast
- I will remain and wait the data of the ideal H.D. spar pip-pin w/2 balls and
T-handle
I had a fateful demo flight in Lakeland FL in 1996.
I can clearly remember how easily by one hand
Mr Roger Sheridan (?) inserted the pins before our unforgettable flight.
Eight years ago I did not understand how beautifully sight it was!
So, it is possible for all of us, also. Tight is good but not too tight.
Bob, I think the Beech wing pin is at least 1" or more.
Too big task for me to sand it to 1/2".
The best news come here:
*******************
The Northernmost Europa builder in the World
- Jos AKA Ceaser of the Lappland and Brother
of the Santa Claus - called me today and
promised me to send his ONLY spar pip-pin.
I shall got it in few hours!
Imagine: man can easily lend his wife or
even his car but this man gives his pip-pin.
Cheers, Raimo

Speaking of pip pins, I just installed the control column which calls for an
optional pip pin on the passenger's side. The one that came with the kit is
3/8" too short and I don't see a replacement in Aircraft Spruce. It's the
same make as the one on the tailplanes. Anybody know of a good place to get
these?

Hello everyone=85=85I have some query's on the exhaust system I'm hoping you
can help me with. I have what is probable an early XS firewall forward
package for a 912S
On unwrapping the exhaust package there were two 50mm dia aluminium
tubes 50mm long with curved flanges on the end=85=85..does anyone know what
they are for?
I have had trouble with the cowl hitting against the most forward
exhaust pipe, to the extent that I have had to cut the front of the cowl
to allow the bend in the pipe to stick through about 5mm. I will glass
this over but I was wondering if anyone else had this problem. I have an
Airmaster prop fitted which requires the front of the cowl to be 25mm
behind the prop flange which has probably caused the problem.
Can anyone tell me what the cuts in the aluminium CD1 sheet is for.
Apart from the normal holes for the radiators I have just behind the
first bend looking from the front, 3 parts of a 50mm square cut through,
is this supposed to be removed or bent down into the airflow to allow
excess air up around the muffler or what???????
Coming together more slowly than I would like
