None of them believe they owed anything. We are talking about small amounts, but if they have done this to a large number of you, it could add up ? Check your records before paying, or ask for details of what and when ? Might be a scam? [alledgely !] Cheers, Nev. == == == ==

There have been several revisions to both text and diagrams for the crowbar mod. The one on the current CD, and on the Club website, is issue 5. If you've got an older CD, please download the latest version from the website. Subject: Wing tanks
    From: "Rosen, Mattias" <MRosen@harmanbecker.com>
FILETIME=[45D64520:01C4BA8A] --> Europa-List message posted by: "Rosen, Mattias" <MRosen@harmanbecker.com> Thanks everyone for the infos on wing tanks. While searching the internet for more details of Walter Binder's work, I found a horrifying story (in German language - www.dg-flugzeugbau.de/noah-d.html) about Mr. Binder escaping from his aircraft last year after the tail separated from the rest of the plane at 7000'. My first thought was, I'd better not mess with the loads and structures of my Europa. Then I read on, and found out that the event occurred during a test-/certification flight of a new glider model (and had nothing to do with his Europa). I guess Mr. Binder was happy his parachute was working... Making the Europa a 2+1 or 2+2 seat airplane by having at least some of the fuel in the wings is a nice idea. My two kids together weigh about as much as 70 liters of avgas. If you go for French or Dutch registration, it would probably be possible. Under the new JAR rules, there should be no problem operating such aircraft in any other EU/JAR-country even if the regulations for national aircraft are more restrictive. This is true at least for Germany and Sweden, who both treat homebuilt aircraft with foreign registration equal to "certified" aircraft. This means that if your homebuilt is allowed to carry four persons in the country of registration, you can operate it with four persons in our own country as well. Do the UK authorities treat foreign homebuilts in the same way? One problem though - I have not yet put the top on, and I am not sure if there will be enough space in the back for two children. Also, what about seat belt attachments? If one were to install wing tanks, where would be the right place to put them from a CG point of view? In front of, or aft of the spar? /Mattias -----Ursprngliche Nachricht----- Von: Kingsley Hurst [mailto:hurstkr@growzone.com.au] Gesendet: Montag, 25. Oktober 2004 02:01 An: europa-list@matronics.com Betreff: RE: Europa-List: Wing tanks --> Europa-List message posted by: "Kingsley Hurst" --> <hurstkr@growzone.com.au> > I think I met Walter at the factory many years ago, collecting a couple of Classic kits. Am I right in thinking he doesn't speak much English? Graham, That would have been correct at the time at least. I remember reading a funny article by Ivan Shaw in one of my early Europa Newsletters. (In the days when they were printed on shiny paper). Ivan said that he spoke no German and Walter spoke no English but somehow they managed to communicate. Ivan also got the impression that Walter would walk through a brick wall if one got in the way! I think this was borne out by the mods Walter did and from someone I know in the gliding fraternity, on all accounts Walter is a very smart man. I also have my suspicions that some of the ideas in the XS were born from some of Walter's mods. I saw the funny side of the article hence my being able to remember something for a change. What methods have folks used to keep the cable housing from rubbing on the baffle? Is this a job for those cable safe things I see in the 'spruce catalog? Thanks, Kevin ---

    Subject: Wing tanks

FILETIME=[D7905D40:01C4BAA1] --> Europa-List message posted by: "Rosen, Mattias" <MRosen@harmanbecker.com> Duncan, Thanks for these inpiring words. Ever since the day I first heard about the DynAro 4S (four-seater Ban-Bi) I have been tempted to trading my Europa kit for an MCR 4S. The big problem was that I really wanted Europa's detachable wings, and I didn't really need a "real" four seater, but rather a 2+2 (back seats being something like what you will find in a seven-seater VW Touran or Opel Zafira). If the Europa can be converted to a 2+2 seater, it is really the perfect plane for me :-) I think it would be wise to have at least a small fuel tank in the fuselage, and then adding a way of transferring fuel from the wing tanks to the fuselage tank as needed. That way you could go for a short flight without having to fill up the wings, and - for the cross country flights - it would give you time to find a place to land, should fuel delivery from the wing tanks become disrupted (I don't like the idea of relying on a quick-connect device for critical fuel delivery). I am almost convinced that it can be done now, and I am going to investigate this issue further. /Mattias -----Ursprngliche Nachricht----- Von: Duncan McFadyean [mailto:ami@mcfadyean.freeserve.co.uk] Gesendet: Sonntag, 24. 2.60 REPLY_TO_EMPTY Reply-To: is empty --> Europa-List message posted by: "Tim Weert" <tim.weert@hccnet.nl> Hi Europa Pilots, Are there already performance tables available with Europa powersettings for the Europa XS tri gear with Rotax 914UL and Airmaster AP332 CS propeller? I remember we had performance tables during our flighttraining for the Beachcraft Bonanza in our chacklists. When we had for instance to cruise 75% at (H) thousand feet, - we had to set (P)psi manifold pressure, - (R)*1000 RPM, - (L)gallon/hrs fuel flow and - the IAS would become (V)knots. There were also thumb rules for ISA deviations. Those tables are easy to read, easy to interpret and they dont use power (PCs). If this performance tables are not available Im interested in a method to create these tables ourselve and make them available for al Europa pilots via the WWW. Also the other engine/prop configurations could be inserted. Regards, Tim Weert. #460, PH-JAI. ---------------- Visit EuropaOwnersForum http://forum.okhuijsen.org/

By chance just last evening I had a long conversation w/ Alex Bowman, a Europa driver and retired CAN Air Force test pilot, and he recalled how he and his engineer had discussed integral wing tanks forward of the spar with all the plumbing running thru a 3" dia. hole in the wing root rib. Ultimately he elected not to install them, but I believe he was satisfied that it was feasible from an engineering standpoint. We did not discuss possible issues w/ regard to fuel contamination of the glass and foam. Alex's email is: amhd@shaw.ca Fred A194

--> Europa-List message posted by: "David Joyce" <davidjoyce@doctors.org.uk> Mattias, The normal fuel tank is in front of the spars, but behind the C of G mid range, so that filling up the tanks puts the C of G back. more of a snag with the idea of making it a 4 seater is that luggage puts the Cof G back considerably more because of the greater moment arm. In fact the possible combinations of pilot range 120-450lbs /fuel 0-110lbs & baggage0-80lbs uses up the entire permissible C of G range (58.0 to 62.5"). The following figures for my mid weight 914/XS illustrate the problem: Wt of pax Wt of fuel Wt of bags C of G posn Shift of C of G 200 0 0 58.42 - 200 110 0 60.03 1.61 200 110 80 62.22 2.19 400 0 0 58.01 - 400 110 0 59.48 1.47 400 110 80 61.21 1.73 If you take a small (120lb) pilot or two large ones (450lbs) you readily reach the extremes of the CofG range. I am very attracted to the idea of wing tanks to increase the range but am deeply suspicious of the idea of making it into a 4 seater or even a 2+2. My thought was to continuously replenish the reserve side, even when the fuel level is below the hump, to insure maximum fuel should you ever need it. --> Europa-List message posted by: "Duncan McFadyean" <ami@mcfadyean.freeserve.co.uk> With two JAR crew (189 lbs each) and full fuel (105 lbs), I can (in theory, if not "legally") get 150lbs of baggage into the back of my Europa (which has an empty weight of 727 lbs). At which point the CG reaches the aft limit and the all up weight is still only 1360 lbs. That leaves 105 +150 = 255lbs worth of rear passengers , assuming they can sit far enough forward (or don't mind facing backwards; far safer!). I could hang a VP prop on the front to bring the CG further forward. It's a given that fuel in hte wings would not contribute to a/c allup weight and would have to be located forward of the spars (currently its at the rear of the spars); that argument would have to be won first! Of course, this analysis does not allow for the additional weight of seats, belts, complex fuel plumbing etc. Either way, a third seat only should be easy. Yes, a cablesafe works really well with the wastegate cable. You'll need the 3/16" insert to capture the cable properly. As you'll need to disconnect the cable from the servo to do this ensure that you clearly mark the cable and servo actuator to get the cable back to the same spot when you reassemble it. Tony
