Subject: | Matronics 2004 Email List Fund Raiser [PLEASE READ] |
--> Europa-List message posted by: Matt Dralle <dralle@matronics.com>
Dear Listers,
Each November I hold a PBS-like Fund Raiser to support the continued
operation and upgrade of the Email List servers at Matronics. The Lists
sponsored here are supported solely though the direct contributions of its
members each year during the Fund Raiser. As you have likely noticed,
there is no commercial advertising on any of the Lists or on any of the
List-related web sites such as the List Browser and List Search Engine.
That doesn't mean they're free to operate, however. To run a first class,
high-performance, highly-available service such as the Forums at Matronics,
its take resources. These resources fall into the categories of financial
and personnel. As far as "personnel" is concerned, its a one-man show and
I perform all of the work required to operate and upgrade the Lists without
being directly compensated for my work. But that's a labor of love. The
financial resources required, on the other hand, are covered primarily
though the generous contributions of the List members.
Direct costs include, for example, a commercial-grade T1 line Internet
connection dedicated primarily to serving the Lister Community. This T1
Internet connection provides a high-performance, dedicated connection to
the Archive and Browsing Tools and assures the quickest, most reliable
delivery of List messages. It seems like there's always an upgrade
required and this year I've added an all new online backup system to
automatically backup all of the Lists Archives as well as provide for
complete system disaster recovery. This new system would enable me to
restore the email and/or web server systems to 100% in only a couple of
hours if one of them were to blow up.
The number of messages processed by the Matronics Forums continues to
increase as well. In the last 12 months, there have been over 70,000
unique messages posted across the various lists, amounting to well over 32
MILLION messages that have been redistributed to List members in that same
period! The List web site also sees an equally high level of traffic with
some 148,000 Archive searches performed last year and a staggering 13
million web site hits!
During the month of November, I will be sending out a Fund Raiser reminder
message a couple of times a week and I ask for your patience and
understanding during this time. The Fund Raiser is the sole means of
support for the Lists, and the existence and longevity of the Lists hinges
directly its success.
This year once again, Andy Gold of the Builder's Bookstore has provided a
number of great incentive gifts during the Fund Raiser. Andy provides
these items to me at a substantial discount and they have proven to be very
popular among the Listers. Thank you Andy for your extraordinary
generosity and support of the Lists again this year! Please visit Andy's
web site, the Builder's Bookstore:

If you use the Matronics Email Lists and enjoy the quick and easy access to
one of the best resources on the Internet for Homebuilt and General
aviation discussion forums, please make a Contribution today to support the
continued operation. Remember, its *your* Contribution that keeps these
Lists running.

Skycraft had a written off XS Europa recently; don't know what state the
wings were in. I registered an interest in these, but never heard back from
them.
Presumably you're trying to answer the PFA's standard question in relation
to fitting landing lights (i.e. will they overheat if left on
inadvertently).
Rather than answer the question, you could try going with lights that don't
use much power (i.e. HID lights take 35W and put out a greater proportion of
that as light rather than heat, as compared to QI bulbs).
I have photos of some units with running temperatures (in free air at room
temp) marked on them, if you're interested.

CreativAir...which is currently marketing LED wingtip position lights in
combination w/ a 75w Halogen landing light posts the following note on its
website:
> Thursday July 8, 2004

> aircraft use and am going to have to look in another direction... More info

Presumably, their efforts to substitute HID for the Halogen stem from a
desire for good light w/ reduced power and heat.
In response to my enquiry as to heat buildup w/ the 75w Halogens, CreativAir
said that they have no test data in this regard.
From other sources, I'm told that the 75w Halogen bulb throws 75% of its
heat out the back of the bulb which, in the CreativAir installation, allows
that heat to move into the cavity of the wingtip (which in turn is open to
the cavity of the wing itself aft of the main spar)
I have no idea with regard to whether heat buildup either under normal
operating conditions or in the event the lights were left on inadventantly
for an extended period would become an issue, though I am considering
running extra wiring so that a thermostat could be installed to monitor
internal wing temperatures.

Hi!
I looked at fitting a Landing or ID lamp in my Trigear.
I've tried Whelan ID Lamp (35W), Hella Daylight HID Car Daylight running
lights (6W) and eventually purchased a pair of 75W 2.5" Halogen Units from
Lancair.
The final choice is to fit one of the Lancair Units in lower Engine Cowling
but with a cool white 18 LED replacement Bulb in MR16 fitment style and will
use it just as a circuit ID light. It works well and is enough to attract
attention easily and enhances my 2 Strobes.
So... The 75W Unit was VERY hot in operation! and very quickly in its turned
Aluminium Housing. Far too hot to handle. It would need ventilation or could
be adapted to tilt down into airstream in a hinged operation. The positive
was the light output. About 15 degree cone with great range. Well designed
for true Landing lights.
This is not a scientific observation but common sense based on heat output
at 75W in a composite construction confined space.
My spare Light Unit is en route to another Europa Builder who has some other
ideas on fitment.

Hi All,
I am pulling together the various ferrous rods and parts to take them down
to my friendly neighborhood powder coating shop.
I'm thinking of spraying zinc chromate on all my aluminum tubes and various
brackets which will be located internally.
I'm tempted to also powder coat the exposed (external) aluminum parts such
as the flap accuators, outrigger and landing gear components.
My stabilator torque tube assembly catches my eye as it appears to be made
from stainless steel...as a consequence, I've concluded that it doesn't need
any protective coating (paint or powder coat) at all. (true?)
Would anyone care to comment, or perhaps guide me towards a better way of
dealing with these issues?

Duncan,
Thanks for your email - and you presume correctly :-)
I'll be going for bulbs that give maximum light for the wattage (oh, how I
love that Rotax electrical budget!) - so your thoughts on HID are most
welcome. And I'd very much like to take you up on the offer of the photos,
please!
Kind regards,

Fred,
Thanks for that input - those are the position lights I am using, and I too
may have to fit thermocouples in order to light a caption in the cockpit if
I leave them on and temps get too high.

Ever since Erin Brockovich (the person and the movie) hexavalent chrome has
had an extremely bad reputation so you may find it impossible to purchase
the zinc chromate. It works, if you can get it. Alodine is relatively safe
to handle, easy to use, and will provide adequate protection for all of the
aluminum parts. Use Metalprep from the same manufacturer (Henkel Surface
Technologies http://www.henkel.com/int_henkel/technologies/index.cfm for
pre-treatment.
My Tri-Gear main gear legs and nose gear assembly are powder coated but not
any of the aluminum stuff. While the aluminum parts could be powder coated
keep in mind that the coating is relatively brittle and therefore should not
be used where fasteners attach things, and if you mask the attachment points
it somewhat negates the advantage of powder coating for corrosion
resistance. It is important to keep in mind that coatings protect against
corrosion ONLY as long as the coating remains intact and wherever there is a
discontinuity in the coating corrosion will proceed at an accelerated rate.
When I made a similar comment on this forum about the stabilator torque tube
material I was corrected by the factory (Neville, I think) - the tube is
nickel plated.

Fred,
DON'T DO THE STABILATOR TORQUE TUBE!!!!!! Your stabilators would never fit
onto it later. It is a very snug fit at various points when mounted.
As for the aluminum parts being powder coated......you might check with your
coater to see what temp he runs his batch at as this might have a negative
effect on the strength of the parts. I have heard this from some of the more
knowledgeable people on this forum. I dipped coated mine with zinc chromate and
then spray painted most of them.
One bit of heads up.....find the two sides of the stabilator trim assy, look
forward in the manual to see how these have a spring load with fiber washer
slides along the arc.....don't paint that area because it won't slide very well
afterwards. Been there, done that, used lots of scrotch bright to remove.
