I have got the main gear in now, but find that the brake caliper is hitting
the tunnel wall when the wheel is nearly fully retracted. The answer is to
rotate the brake caliper 90 degrees, which is where it used to be before Europa
changed the design. However, this will require one of the old style brake
torque plates, and the factory has not got those any more. Andy Draper advises
against the alternative of drilling another hole in the existing torque plate -
apparantly stress analysis has shown that the torque plate could fail.
I understand from Andy that a number of people have changed over to the new
design, which has put the brake caliper in line with the swinging arm. Does
anyone still have an old style brake torque plate kicking around that they would
be willing to let me have?
The brake caliper is not my only gear retraction problem. The tyre is hitting
the main brake cylinder, so I'll have to move that out of the way. The
alternatives are upwards (another bulge on top of the tunnel) or outboard (where
it
will restrict seat width). I believe some other builders have had similar
problems. Any views on which is the best solution?

Am I right in thinking that an ELT install in a UK PFA Aircraft is not
allowed.
I have an Ameri-King AK450 Dual Frequency Kit purchased whilst in USA on the
basis it was a safety investment.
If the answer is No then look out for it on eBay.

John,
I put a bulge in my tunnel to clear the brake caliper. You need to be aware
that as the brake pads wear the caliper will move closer to the wall, so
make allowance for that when you make the bulge. Graham Singleton related a
story about his gear hanging up due to this problem and he had to pull a few
G's to shake it loose.
As far as the tire hitting the top, I think someone posted a modification on
http://forum.okhuijsen.org/ that described a stop to prevent this from
happening.

Paul, thanks for that suggestion. I'll be doing the same if I can't get a

Sorry Paul, I should have made it clear that my problem is different. The
tyre hits the brake master cylinder just before I have full gear retraction. My
only option is therefore to move the brake master cylinder upwards or outboard.
Why I should be having this problem is a bit of a mystery. Andy thinks that
possibly the swinging arm may be slightly out of alignment with the centre
line.

COMPULSORY COOLANT CHANGE ????
Unless I am missing something, the change to EVANS fluid is only required if you
have cooling issues with your engine installation. (See extracts below)
page 10-7 of Operating Manual Rev 3, dated Jul 01/2004.
NOTE: Depending on the installation circumstances (max.cylinder head temperature
reached). Convnetional coolant can also be ussed. For this purpose, see
the flight manual of the aircraft manufacturer.
page 32A of Rotax 914 installation manual. dated Jul 01/2004
The coolant to be used is defined clearly in the Operators Manual. Depending
on the installation conditions, conventional coolants can also be used. The
provision of proof about max. reachable cylinder head temperature and the the
coolant to be used is the responsibility of the airplane manufacturer in regard
to 12.2.1 and 12.2.2. (The operating limits.)
As over-cooling is a bigger problem than overheating in my aircraft, buying this
expensive fluid seems a waste of money. Furthermore, what about all the aircraft
that have been flying for years, that suddenly can't fly without this
expensive stuff. Is there a rotax percentage in here somewhere.
Are people knee-jerking here or, am I completely out to lunch!! (Believable)

COMPULSORY COOLANT CHANGE ????
On September 13th Rotax issued Service Bulletin #29 which mandated a change to
Evans Coolant within the next 100 hours and no later than December 31st 2004.
On September 15th the following Notice was issued.
THIS DOCUMENT IS GENERAL IN NATURE AND IS NOT INTENDED TO REPLACE THE INFORMATION
PROVIDED IN THE SERVICE BULLETINS.
ALL OWNERS, OPERATORS AND MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL SHOULD OBTAIN AND CAREFULLY REVIEW
THE FULL TEXT OF THE SERVICE BULLETIN AND ANY RELATED DOCUMENTATION.
SELECTING COOLANT TYPE FOR 912 / 914 SERIES ENGINES:
When determining the type of engine coolant to be used (standard glycol / water
mixture or Evans waterless coolant), all owners and operators of Rotax 912 /
914 series aircraft engines should carefully review the appropriate sections of
the revised Installation manuals.
The latest revisions of the Installation manuals set out new LOWER maximum allowable
CHT temperature limits for engines using conventional water / glycol coolant.
When considering the use of conventional water / glycol coolant, owners
and operators, as well as aircraft designers and manufacturers must insure that
the new LOWER maximum CHT limits will not be exceeded.
In installations where engine cylinder head temperatures may exceed the new lower
limits set out for conventional coolants, Evans waterless coolant must be used.
Once again use of conventional water / glycol coolant is only recommended if engine
cylinder head temperatures will never exceed the new lower values set out
in the latest revisions of the engine installation manuals. In all other cases
Evans waterless coolant MUST be used.

Sometimes you get the same thing twice !
However as I understand it some of the "mandatory" bulletins do not apply to
homebuilts if you use the uncertified engines. It is certainly sensible to
comply but it is not compulsory.
Rotax have an amazing system for numbering their SB & SI. Or rather they
don't ! Each time one arrives it seems to follow a different naming
convention. Not logical at all !
AND :
One of the most recent SB's was the one associated with oil filters.
Firstly they announced that all filters installed between date X and date Y
have to be checked before the next flight.
Then they issued another saying (correctly) that it was filters SOLD between
date X and date Y that had to be checked. The stated gap was to be at least
20 thousandths of an inch.
Now they have issued number 3 (even though it is NOT called issue number 3
on it !) which has changed the minimum gap to 8 thousandths.
I don't know if the (original) German SB has come out in 3 versions, but
this smacks of inefficiency !
There has been another Service Letter which points to every which
possibility to explain difficulty of starting of the 912S. But it didn't
include suggestion that the Heavy Duty starter would solve the problem.
Indeed all these SB & SI allocate all the blame towards the users and away
from Rotax.
There was a SI notifying us of the existence of the HD starter but without
admitting the need for it. Maybe in some installations with short battery
runs and a lightweight propeller the 912S starts every time with the
standard starter. But it didn't in mine (with the battery in the back and
the Airmaster prop). Without any real information mine blew its sprag clutch
and changing it and the starter motor cost me 1100 (at only 100 hours).
I have said before that the HD starter motor will fit the Europa and can be
fitted without removing the engine - if you have the XS firewall forward kit
- engine mounts and stuff). In fact the sprag clutch can be changed in situ
also. The engine has to come out to change the sprag clutch if you have a
classic firewall forward, and (apparently) the HD starter won't fit in the
classic fwf. I have a classic fuselage (kit 51) but the fwf is XS. Phew !
Anyone who is about to buy a classic fwf should NOT buy a 912S, go for the
912 or the 914. If you going for a 912S in an XS fwf installation specify
the HD starter when ordering the engine. It is only about 70 extra if you
buy it instead of the standard starter. (It cost me 300 outright !- Anyone
want to buy a little used standard starter - offers ?)
Sorry to go on about this but I was well p*ssed off with Rotax about this. I
have other, minor grievances, which I would repeat off-list.
These are all criticisms of the Austrian end of the business, not the UK
side.

Your problem is tpical my tire hit the master cylinder also. I raised the
assembly up slightly. The bulge I made is only about a half an inch high
and is very countoured. It looks like it was made to be there.

I have read in the past that there is an extra cooling shroud that can be installed
on each cylinder of the 912S.
That shroud I think fits the 914, is it something desirable to install on a 914?

I know that on a 912S install it is a very desirable thing to install the Heavy
Duty starter.
I know the 914 is lower compression and less displacement, but is it worth it to
order the 914 with a Heavy Duty starter?

I just complied with the Rotax mandatory service bulletin by replacing my
coolant with the new NPG+ coolant - waterless. The concept is simple - the
coolant now has a boiling point of 375 degrees F so there is no possibility
of boiling over should the CHTs approach the 275 degree F limit. I have
three flight with it now and I can say that the temps are running warmer
than they have in the past. I am not sure this is a good thing, since it is
now winter and the air temp is cool. I suppose I will see what happens when
we warm up again. My engine monitor reads about 10 degrees high, so I am
seeing 240 degrees where I would normally see about 230 in climb. The CHTs
also seem to come up faster taxiing out, but the oil temp doesn't warm up
any faster.
Has anyone used this coolant yet?
In the process of replacing the fluid, I removed my exhaust system (914) and
found that my exhaust leak may have been coming from the flange where the
exhaust goes into and out of the turbo. I have carefully planed those
surfaces and reassembled it. I have had no CO detected in the cockpit since
then and will be looking at the area around the turbo to see if there is any
more evidence of leakage there.

Have you checked that your tyre is aligned with the centreline of the
fuselage? ie tailwhwheel lines up with the grooves in the tyre?

Hi! Richard/all
I just have to make one of my general notes of observation here......as
you are aware I had to replace piston rings and reseat valves on my
Jabiru 3300 at 450 hours which initiated some bemused comments in
comparison to Rotax.
These present Rotax items of discontent go quite a way to ease my
conscience over my choice of the Jabiru. I guess it's the whole picture
which is the ultimate consideration for initial purchase decisions. Then
having made that choice you are stuck with it warts and all.

Overcooling is also more of a problem for me, except for very long ground
running times. But I expect that this coolant will help out here. It has a
higher boiling point, but lower heat capacity. Therefore it won't boil over, but
I would expect the engine to run hotter.
BTW - anyone know if/where you can get the stuff in the UK?
