Simple, now your talking my kind of language. :-) I
purchased a cheep hand held scales from Foxons, the local fisherman's store.
I taped some string to the rear of the tyre attached the scales and pulled
until the wheel moved, kept adjusting the nut until it just starts to move
between 8-9 kg. Actually my scales are in lbs but easy to work out,
Keep the scales handy as you will have to check the force periodically to
avoid shimmying.

Well, I have watched and listened and finally have to comment:
I was one of those badly affected by EMIL to the tune of approximately
$20.000:00 and I am not complaining or howling about it!. Most of the $20,000:00
is parts that I have had to buy again by trawling the web and buying bits and
pieces here and there from builders who had too much of one thing or another.
I have also bought a FWF kit from Europa 2004 and it is sat in the garage
waiting to be fitted. I speak as I find, and can only say good things about
Europa2004; they have been prompt, genuinely tried to help and are working
ridiculous hours to try and satisfy all builders past and present.
You say that they should send out free parts etc to those who got their
fingers burned by EMIL. I have never heard anything so silly: so let's say that
you bought a business that had been closed, you are saying that you would
give kits away to those affected. I don't think so, you would be out of
business in a week!!
It's time to stop the complaining and wish all those hardworking guys at
Kirby Moorside the best of luck in their new venture and thank goodness that
someone responsible is now running things to the benefit of all builders both
old and new.

Having installed the .250" inch stuff on an AA-5, I can assure you it
has little flexibility if a compound curve, so it better be molded
perfectly in order to fit.
I know also that birds have pierced this stuff too, so I went to the
NTSB database to see what's there, and the first report was better
yet. A bird pierced the fiberglass wing root fairing of an AA-5 at
about 130mph, AND severed the fuel line inside there. This fiberglass
is thicker than anywhere on the Europa, and the fuel line is 1/2"
aluminum pipe!

In the West of England here they have reintroduced the 'Bustard'.... I did
spell it right!
It's a bird that can weigh up to 50 lbs....... and FLIES! It's alleged.
Armour plating may be a safer option in this case!
I see no reason why it shouldn't sport an anti-collision light or strobe!

disguise - we could argue to EASA that they don't carry Mode S, so why

I still think in aviation terms it's name is incorrectly spelt.
The cry of 'look out for that big bustard' will naturally be translated

Greetings All,
I have seen many different and inspired ideas for placement of
a landing light. Somehow however, I seem to have missed any
discussion about results in terms of operational satisfaction.
Is anyone out there flying with a landing light that provides
useful illumination for standard landing ops, has reasonable bulb
longevity, etc? Anyone successfully using halogen PAR36 bulbs,
or automotive "fog" lights (eg., the 55W halogen aftermarket
type), or HID? Anyone successfully avoid melting their cowl
or other composite engraftment site?
Inquiring minds (with a new big alternator) want to know!

Thicker windshields are usually installed to reduce
wind and vibration noise intrusion into the cockpit.
The windshield is a huge drumhead that is set vibrating
by the prop blast and engine vibration. A thicker screen
will dampen those vibrations somewhat - but only somewhat.
A good pair of headsets/earplugs is cheaper+lighter.
Cars used to increase the glass thickness to do this...now
they use a special noise-damping PVB film between two thinner
panes; the wind-noise reduction is very noticeable. Sorry,
doesn't work for acrylic.
The thicker windscreen would add about 5lbs. However, you'd
really need to do the side screens too, and they'd add another
15lbs.

Thanks for your responses...both serious and lighthearted!
Seems that the 1/4" windshield does "fall into that category of ways to
increase weight and throw additional money down the hole".

Ira,
Along with the polycarbonate wingtip lighting covers I've molded, I intend
to utilise the combination LED position lights, strobe, and landing lights
available thru CreativAir (http://www.creativair.com/). A good picture of
this set up with access panels on the Europa is available at Jeff Behrness
website for A055, at www.N55XS.com/ (go to photos and narrative of May 10,
2004).
In response to my enquiry as to heat buildup w/ the 75w Halogen landing
light, Bill VonDane of CreativAir said that they have no test data in this
regard. From other sources, I'm told that the 75w Halogen bulb throws 75% of
its heat out the back of the bulb which, in the CreativAir installation,
allows that heat to move into the cavity of the wingtip (which in turn is
open to the cavity of the wing itself aft of the main spar). I have no idea
with regard to whether heat buildup, either under normal operating
conditions, or in the event the lights were left on inadventantly for an
extended period, would become a fire safety or structural issue, though I am
considering running extra wiring so that a thermostat could be installed to
monitor internal wing temperatures.
CreativAir has over 200 hours experience w/ their position/landing/strobe
combo in the FG wingtip of an RV-8; in this installation, the outermost wing
rib is solid, so any air heated by the landing light is confined to the
volume of the FG wingtip to no discernible ill effect.

Hi Steve and All,
Get the nosewheel off the ground, aim the wheel in the straight ahead
position.
Get 36'' of string / cord, tie the ends together, to make a loop, and hook it
over the axle bolt.
Pass the other end of the loop behind the tyre [ U.S. guys, note the correct
spelling !} at the 3 / 9 o' clock position, and have the string leaving the
tyre at 90 degrees to the aircraft centreline.
Hook a fishing scale [ or similar] onto the string loop, and pull with the
scale, at 90 degrees to aircraft centreline until the friction damper
''breaks''. Adjust the nut on the spindle until the breakout force of about 18
Lb is
reached. Each time you pull it, make sure you return the wheel to straight ahead,
and are pulling at 90.
If the split pin [ cotter in US] hole doesn't line up with a castle , back
off the nut a touch, so it does, [ don't let the breakout force get below 16
Lb, or you may get shimmy, don't let it go above 20Lb, or you will have a job
turning at low speed] If needed [ rarely] put a shim washer under the nut to aid
pin alignment]
Keep grease off the plastic disc. Easy job.

Hi Karel and All,
Remove the upper cowl, pick the aircraft up with a hoist / crane from the two
upper engine mount tubes. Support under the wings with padded saw horses [ no
great weight here, just to prevent aircraft rolling].
Remove main wheel, you can now get your arm in to feel the bungee. Depending
on where you have tied the knot in the bungee [ on the swing arm, or at the
top tube on the U/C frame] untie the knot, and yank some more through, and retie.
The correct tension, with the wheel back in place, is when the gear handle is
unlatched from the down gate, the handle will go half way up the slot on it's
own.If you can't work around the suspension block / damper unit, pull the pin
from the swing arm / damper, and you can pull the swing arm down to get up in
there.Also a good time to check all the bolts / pins are tight / safetied.
Just make sure the plane can't settle down on you with your arm up in the
well, believe me, it hurts when the gear tries to guillotine your arm off !

I have seen many different and inspired ideas for placement of
a landing light. Somehow however, I seem to have missed any
discussion about results in terms of operational satisfaction.
Is anyone out there flying with a landing light that provides
useful illumination for standard landing ops, has reasonable bulb
longevity, etc? Anyone successfully using halogen PAR36 bulbs,
or automotive "fog" lights (eg., the 55W halogen aftermarket
type), or HID? Anyone successfully avoid melting their cowl
or other composite engraftment site?
Inquiring minds (with a new big alternator) want to know!

reading about the opinions on props. what is the opinion of using the 3
blade on the 3300 instead of the 2 blade because of tip speed. i am
buildind a dakota hawk and a builder in new zealand is good performance
from a 3 blade warp. he had tried a 2 blade of someones manufacture. any
experience out there with the warp ?

Bob is the guy who got me going in aviation. We built his Europa, "Beep
Beep" together. I learned to fly and built my Europa, Wile E. Coyote" the
next year. He has since moved up to a Mooney 210 and is working on his
interment rating. Beep Beep is not in Florida.

Sorry, but Richard IS right. The new Europa DO care about the old customers
who were 'done over' by Wilson, just as we all do. But if they were to start
sending out very expensive free parts to everyone who was robbed, they'd be
out of business in no time at all. What sort of business plan would that be?
I talked to a guy on Friday evening who lost GBP19,000 (about USD35,000) to
the old operation. He doesnt expect a freebie off the new one. I look
forward to the day when folks like him and Mr. Morgan reclaim their funds
through the courts from those responsible for the collapse of EMIL, not
those trying to save our type.
Do you have a television? The reason I ask is a friend of mine bought one on
EBay and never received it. I'm sure you care about that, too, and I'd offer
him mine but I've only got one. I know you Americans have multiple TVs in
your houses, so I was wondering if you would be so kind as to send him one
of yours? He's not well off, so I'm afraid he cant pay you for it, but I'm
sure that won't be a problem.

You may be right by what might follow in a court of law, should Mr
morgan take it that far, but your comments of how life is a bitch are
very much incorrect in my book. Good things happen to those people and
companies that do what's right. Many companies here in the US. such as
the new Glass Air did right by the people that we're due product
A little consideration for L. Morgan would be in order here. If the new
Europa wants the world to know they are in it for the builder/customer
Mr. Morgan should very soon here his kit is on the way. I for one would
not ever recommend a company that didn't care if a past customer got
screwed. Different company owners or not! Making good on old
commitments should have been part of the new business plan. It's part
of building a good reputation. Something the old Europa never thought
of. Hmmm I wonder why the didn't make it?

I would be glade to send your friend a TV. After all I even have one in
my shop to keep me company on the long build hours. I may even have 7
