I have decided to upgrade my Europa to XS firewall forward
specification. This means that I no longer have a requirement for my
Classic stainless exhaust. It is available for sale at 300UK pounds. I
believe the new ones cost over 500UK pounds + tax.
I have ordered my XS firewall kit and I am pleased to report that the
factory thinks there should be little delay on getting the parts. The
limiting parts for delivery are the cowls but I should get those in
January. In the meantime there is plenty of work for me to do with the
rest of the kit but I have one problem. The XS firewall forward kit
assumes that the engine comes with the engine ring mount (it is a Rotax
part). The Classic does not use the ring mount so I have had to order
this separately. Unfortunately Skydrive only receive orders from Rotax
every 4-6 weeks and will not now be placing another order until after
Christmas. As the ring mount is the first part to be fitted it seems I
am delayed until I get a ring mount. Is there any builder out there who
has a ring mount which they are not planning to use for the next 2
months and would be prepared to let me have in exchange for mine when it
arrives?

I've made the links ignore the PHP gibberish...
If you put www.europaowners.org then the name of the album, in this case Harness-per-FAA-recommendation the board will fill in the rest of the link for you so:
http://www.europaowners.org/Harness-per-FAA-recommendation
will get you the link to the harness photos without a ton of gibberish in the link.

Well folks it finally happened, our baby took to the sky at 2.45 this afternoon
for the first time, big grins all round.
Light Westerly wind, + 4=B0 C flown by senior CAA test pilot Paul Mulcahy (fine
fellow tests everything from 757's to microlights and everything in between)
from Rayne near Stansted Essex. After general handling, all of which went almost
faultlessly, the first flight was completed. This represents 3200 + hours of
work and it almost seemed worth it !!
The pilot was extremely impressed with all functions and said it was sweet to fly,
smooth engine response and apart from low temperatures all looking good.
Their was one problem though. The geardown operation strikes fairly solid resistance
about 2/3 of the way through the gate. The pilot first wondered if it was
air pressure / over tight bungee, but then decided this was a little moor than
that. It apears that if you select gear down, reach the resistance, move the
selector partly up the gate, then all the way down, it locks down. We had a
good look but couldn't find any evidence of problems so will have a good inspection
tomorrow, anybody experienced similar problem ?
Prior to the first flight the gear had been cycled 50+ times without hitch.
Looking forward to you all sorting my problem for me before I get back to a cold
hanger floor tomorrow morning !!

Hi.......
We always stayed at least 25 miles from the nearest Cb on the radar

above that height. Has everyone seen the write-up of the Brit glider strike?
Parachutes were paramount there.

If you're stuck, see
www.marc-ingegno.it
click on "other components" and look for Rotax ring mount. It's about half
the price.
I look forward to performance comparison statistics for the XS installation.
The other obvious question is:
why?

Subject: | Shoulder Harness - A Suggestion |
--> Europa-List message posted by: Edward Gladstone <Ted_Gladstone@compuserve.com>
Hi All,
How about fitting a 1" Dia tube, bent like an inverted and flattened "U",
over each headrest ( like a miniature Roll Over Bar ) , that pivots about
the front top edge of the seat back and on either side of the head rest?
The height would be such that the horizontal top of it was about 1" above
shoulder height. It would fold back to the horizontal to allow you to sit
on the headrest while getting in and out, as usual. It would then be
pivoted upright and the seatbelt placed over it before the seatbelt is
taken over the shoulders. This device would resist the compression
forces that would otherwise be taken by the spine in the event of an
accident.
Ideally it should be pivoted at the bottom of the seat back (i.e. at about
the same position that the spine pivots) but this would necessitate it
being much longer and have a lockable hinge, level with the top of the seat
back, to enable the top of it to pivot backwards, as above.
As the seatbelt is free to slide over the tube there should be no levering
effect leading to extra strain on the headrest seatbelt fixing.
Any comments ?

You would need to check also that the truss tubes are continued through the
ring mount tube (i.e. entering a hole in the front of the ring mount tube
and exiting for a short distance through a matching hole in the rear) and
not just butt-welded to the surface of the ring mount tube. Rotax made this
mistake on the early versions of the ring mount, which didn't work
(surprise, surprise!).

Hi All,
On second thoughts, if the "Roll Over Bar" was restricted to pivot from
horizontally back and only to the vertical, there is no need for the
longer version pivoting from the bottom of the seat back. The bar. locked
in the vertical position, would hold the shoulder straps above the
shoulder.

Good idea. Converts the compressional load that would otherwise be in the
spine to a compressional load in the U-shaped support. The base-fixing of
the support would obviously need to be strong enough to prevent it being
punched into the top of the seat back and have some thing to lock it into
place so that it did not rotate out of its optimum orientation. Or maybe fix
the top of the U to the belt itself; it could then rotate back, but not
forwards.

Why does it have to be "locked" in the vertical position? If it were
attached to a "mid-point" on the shoulder belt it would be prevent from
rotating forward by the belt; doesn't matter if its rotates backwards.

Subject: | Calculating Maintenance Time |
--> Europa-List message posted by: "Steve Crimm" <steve.crimm@stephenscott.com>
Evening All,
I would be interested in hearing how everyone calculates maintenance time?
In my previous life flying helicopters we had two Hobbs meters. One for
maintenance based on actual flight time. The other was for total running
time that we used for customer billing purposes.
With my Grand Rapids EIS is appears to gather time based on oil pressure, so
how does everyone else do it?
Thanks
Steve Crimm
