Thought I would advise you of our findings following the gear down operation selection
problem. We raised the aircraft and carried out the retract test, and
thankfully were able to repeat the fault.
A good look round the gear showed nothing even remotely obvious, and no witness
marks. We centred our investigation around the flaps. We removed the two rear
inspection panels on the parcel shelf and the small box we had made to fit under
the right side and with one of us stuck through the D panel, operated the
gear - all worked perfectly.
It turns out the said stowage box (pretty small - GPS size) under the right side
panel was just interfering with the rear flap torque tube. It had clearance
when up or down, but midway just caught the mechanism enough to cause a resistance.
We carried out 50+ tests after finishing the installation and a further 2 or 3
for our inspector - all without problem. The box may not have been made for the
50 tests, and may have been removed for access to inspect parts during the sign
off process, - their's a moral their somewhere !!

I have put a few photos of the 'splash mouldings' Fergus referred to in
his posting on the EuropaOwners forum . They are on page two of the
gallery in the G-GIDY album. There are also some pics of the early
stages of modifying the panel to take the BMA EFIS-1 if anyone is
interested.

When floxing between the aileron closeout and the wing's bottom skin, I
am wondering how much flox is considered normal. The slot is quite
deep, and one could easily stuff a lot of flox to get a smooth curve.
But I don't want to add too much unnecessary weight. How many ounces
would you say is normal for the aileron closeout on each wing?

It was done with full malice aforethought, and better than being the
first step toward user fees on everything. IRS charges directly for
certain services which at least primarily benefit the user:
installment agreements, nonprofit status approval, rulings, changes in
accounting method. Some of them cost more than the typical DAR
charges. The real problem may be how many of these guys, because of
legal liability, will be more fussy than FAA people.

I used just enough to make a tongue depressor curved filet. You are right ,
it is easy to put too much in that crevice.

I looked at you web page. You did a very nice job on your "shoulder strap

Jeff,
...very sweet...I was wondering how you would respond to this thread after
just having installed your well-crafted carpet job!
Are we looking at bent alum. plate (thickness?) or something laid up in FG?

Fred,
The gadget is constructed from 1/8" semi-hard aluminum, 5" wide. I
don't know the actual hardness, but it's fairly stiff. To bend it I
used a vise and did a little pushing. For the 90 degree (approximate)
bend I used a hammer to tap out the radius, moving the plate in the vise
a few times. Ended up with about a 3/4" radius, which really stiffened
the back plate. The slot was just drilled on each end, then connect the
holes with a saber saw, opening the center to drop in the belts. I slit
a length of Nylo-Flo tubing to line the bottom of the slot, to prevent
the belts from chafing. The bolts on the back plate are all set in the
hardpoint. The ones in the top of the headrest simply have large
washers, underneath. When adding the rear plate, I had to substitute a
longer bolt, through the harness connector.
I look forward to the clear tips. They are all that remain, to finish
the wings...

Jeff, a very elegant solution. Thank you.
I have another that I have not yet accomplished nor, thankfully, tested. I
plan to reinforce the skin to the structural bow connection at the rear of
the opening doors. Then reduxing and bolting a aluminum hardpoint to the
aft face of the bow that will extend a few centimeters down so that an
attachment can be to the anchor of the shoulder harness. I plan to use a
"snap shackle" such as use on sailboats so it can be unsnapped to make cargo
or longranger fuel tank easier to load. It will be light, not obtrusive,
not obstructive and according to my consulting engineer (me) of adequate
strength. Photos to follow, once I have solved all of my wiring problems.
Jeff, your upholstery if beautiful!

Quick question to you Jeff,
What type of carpet did you use for lightest weight and what type of
bonding agent did you use to bond it in? It does look good.
Thanks,
Jeff

The carpet is from Auto Zone. You'll find it in the floor mat section.
It is very light, will contour to different shapes and not expensive.
The adhesive is a 3M product that is used to bond vinyl tops on cars.
Very strong, and fairly expensive at around $12. for a 15 oz spray can.
All total, I figure I have around $100. in the carpet job. Over half of
that is the adhesive. I can live with that... :)

Tom,
I was actually considering a similar technique, but didn't want to
reroute wiring and redo the carpeting, so opted for the easy way out.
Have you gotten the bugs worked out of that Jab, yet? Was it you who
just did a first flight in Florida?
