Hi Jos,
The fuselage has small center-cross (+) marked on the outerskin of fuselage
bottom (every 25" station I think)
Line up a string between some crosses and center of the swingarm.
You will get a perfect line up.

Hi Bob
Whilst continuing the ongoing saga of trying to bleed my brakes (now
entering my 3rd month!) I too have noticed excessive tyre wear, mainly
on the outside of the port wheel. I am considering turning the tyre
around, what does the forum think?
Merry Christmas to all

Hi! Ira.
I've posted quite a lot of my like experiences. Suggest you look in the
archives. The problem is due to excessive toe in. IMHO it is likely to
have been improved had the toe in design been reduced to the bare
minimum with the a/c having wings fitted ,1/4 tank of fuel and an
average Pilot weight in the P1 seat. This factor is not only about tyre
wear but also must have a major effect on length of take off run due to
the rolling drag involved. I have considered a mod. to the gear leg
securing bolt and the gear leg socket but it will need some very clever
and finite engineering and a selection of some variable inserts to
adjust the rotational location of the gear legs and at present am galled
at being on my third set not withstanding the need to use incorrect size
tubes.
Of course the story goes......."no one else is having a problem, you
must have set yours up wrong!"""""...... Been there got the damn "Tee

I had a worn main gear tire blow this week end after about 75 h and
maybe
200 landings.
Fortunately it blew in the hangar after landing and taxiing. The Seffner
wisdom is that this is about the best one can expect with the
supplied tires
and landing on real terra firma, eq., concrete.
I ordered Goodyear Flight Special II 6ply 500-5 and tubes from Desser
for
over $200. total.
I will report back on the experience with these tires (although I hope
it
will take more than a year!!)
Has anyone real-life experience with the other brands?
Has anyone tried swapping the 5" wheels to 6" wheels for better turf
performance and the ability
to get "Monster" retreads with double the tread depth of cheap tires

Jos,
I went right to the edges, Floxed and taped. I'm going to add a fairing later,
so I didn't think it mattered. I did cut the the hole a little long. I misread
the manual and measured down the sides and not in the middle, again the fairing
will make nice.....
So far, so good, the gear goes up, down and has good clearances all around.
I will be adding a stop to the gear tunnel to prevent up over-travel

Hi! Alan.
If you are running Europa originals I'm convinced the tube is slightly
bigger than the tyre so when you blow it up it makes some small creases
in the tube which makes it chafe on it's self. I'm now running a harder
compound squarer section tyre and have tubes that are for purpose.
One reason you may be getting more wear on Port is that it is the
natural way to turn on the ground so it gets all the work You need to
make a determined effort to turn clockwise as much as you can. Also if
the brake is only good on the port side the tyre will also get more
work.
Haven't time to look what tyres and tubes I finished up with but "rattle
my cage" in the New Year and I'll dig the info out.

Ira,
I am another one with no practical experience (yet) with landing light, but:
After we discussed this issue at the workshop in Lakeland in June 2001, you
pointed me in the direction of the Boom Beam xenon lamp from LoPresti
(www.speedmods.com). I actually purchased this lamp. The Bonanza version
was recommended to me (LMS-500-006) and with intermediate spreading of the
light (best for traffic pattern visibility). It is very expensive, but
gives fantastic light - 500,000 candle power at only 3 amps (abt 8 amps when
you switch it on, but falls to permanent low current drain in 5 seconds). I
have not installed it yet, but I think it will be placed on the centerline
in the front of the lower cowling, just above the radiator/oil cooler air
inlet, partly recessed into the cowling under the spinner, housed in a
fairing made of epoxy and bid.
I have just measured the surface temperature on the hottest spot of the
reflector (where it connects with the glass lens) after having had the lamp
switched on in my workshop for a while - 175 degr. F / 80 degr. C. The
in-use temperature will be lower since the air flow on the lens will provide
some cooling also of the connecting reflector. I don't think this will
cause a problem, even if I use epoxy and not polyester (according to Andy,
using epoxy to enlarge the bulge in the cowling under the muffler for better
clearance - 10 mm - is no problem in spite of the muffler's high temp).
Fyg, the max diameter of the Boom Beam lamp is 4 1/2 inch (115 mm), depth 4
inches (102 mm), depth to rim of lens 3 1/4 inch (83 mm).
You mention that you may mount a lamp in the nose gear wheel pant. Have you
figured out a way to do this while still having the nose wheel fully
pivoting ( n times 360 degr), or will you restrict its rotation?
Seasons Greetings,

Check the photos at this link.
http://www.rmholsters.com/europa/july2004.htm Scroll down to the 10th.
My wife and I manufactured these boots for about $4. and they secure to
the floor, which removes any possibility to anything rolling under the
stick and jambing the controls. Velcro attachment makes accessing the
controls a snap...

There isn't a lot of choice as the accuracy of installation of the cockpit
module determines at least one of the degrees of freedom of LG01 location.
It's not uncommon to see Europas with unintentional wheel camber as a
consequence of this.
Otherwise, alignment of the trailing angle of the swing arm should (as with
most jobs) be done to best of ability.
Watchout for the cross markings on the fus. molding; they aren't always in
the centre.
Finding and remarking the centreline took me a day!

does the toe in increase with load. It is set up with no load and no toe in
isn't it? I guess toe in must increase slightly as the leg bends when loaded

Hello all:
Just a quick comment about this subject:
While building a Murphy Rebel (floatplane) many said that corrosion protection
is not really needed. It would literally take decades to create structural damage,
unless salt or extreme conditions prevailed.
Owning a few Cessna floatplanes and having a chance to get "inside" surprised me
that Cessna took minimal precautions in this area, and these planes had already
been around for many years on floats.
A thorough annual, as mentioned, should monitor this.
On my Rebel, I did however use a product put out by Stitts (?) called TubeSeal,
and it is designed specifically to coat the inside of tubes that are permanently
sealed. I also took extra epoxy chromate and sprayed my joints and exposed
surfaces.
To date no corrosion, as told to me by the present owner, and it is exclusively
on floats fulltime.
I agree with the idea that unless it is subject to such extreme conditions, it
would not be needed in the cockpit area. I am sure I overdid it on the Rebel.
A symptom of a first time builder.

I suggest keeping the aperture size to a minimum. THe more wind that blows
in there and swirls around the more drag you will have in flight. Several
people have fitted fairings that streamline the wheel when retracted.. Kim
Prout , who sadly rarely speaks on here, sells his I believe and is one of
the real speed gurus. He was lucky, (also skilled) his Dad worked for
Lockheed Skunk Works.
