Cliff,
Did you ever get the numbers? i.e. the speed improvement with the wheel
pants.

Duncan and All
Sorry. Not yet. I have been working on the main gear fairing. Want them to
fit better to the steel landing gear legs. The work is done now, so it is
time to make a test flight with no fairing. Then install the fairings and
wheel pants. The weather is not very reliable here in the Seattle aria, so
making another test flight might be delayed for a while.
These thing seem to take longer than first planned. I will get to it.
Thanks for asking.

The question was raised regarding in-line skate wheels. I have switched over to
the 100 mm in-line wheels earlier this year. They seems to work as well as
the Colson wheels I had been using prior, however, as you can imagine the in-line
wheels are much lighter. I plan on staying with the in-line wheel at this
time. Additionally, I made new slimmer wheel mounting brackets which attach
the wheel to the nylon leg. I would suggest purchasing good quality sealed bearing
for the wheels.

Paul,
Alex and Neil Varcoe, his engineer, have published the following:
PERFORMANCE DATA - Europa XS Mono w/ CAM 125 & AP3222
(Note: w/ 1 pilot and 3/4 fuel; OAT/AP unknown, however, I believe data was
taken during summer months in Pacific NW, perhaps 70-75 deg. F)
Climb @ sea level: 2000 ft/min @ 100 mph w/ fulll throttle
Climb @ 2000 ft. altitude: 1650 ft/min @ 100 mph - MAP 28", 5600 rpm
Cruise @ 3000 ft. altitude:
RPM MAP IAS (mph) Fuel Flow (US gal/hr)
4.600 16" 125 3.0
4,600 18" 132 3.6
4,600 20" 145 4.3
4,600 22" 160 5.1
4,600 24" 174 5.8
4,600 26" 185 6.6
My personal thoughts on the above data:
First, bear in mind that the source of this data is not from a couple of
hotshots eager to hype a product and set the world on fire...a common
occurance in the home-built universe.
Second, after face to face conversations, telephone calls, and numerous
email communications w/ Alex and Neil, I've come to believe that their
mating of the CAM 125 to the Europa XS has been a thoughtful and rigorous
process pursued with integrity.
Third, I take note of Alex's previous career as a test pilot for the RCAF
and hence, believe the data represents best efforts at an accurate, though
perhaps limited, representation of performance of this configuration; more
flight test data will be forthcoming.

I only wish I was as far along on my build!..and I'm sure the care and
attention to detail you're doing at this point will serve you well.

Well...I don't consider myself as a wheel-reinventor...though I taught
myself to fly 30 years ago in one of the very early foot-launched biplane
ultralights, my mantra at the time was to cautiously "manage the degree of
novelty" as I transitioned from pure hang gliding; that fit my definition of
"pioneering". In the case at hand, Alex and Neil have been the pioneers, but
even so, they've worked w/ an engine which has been around a while and the
basic Honda VTEC is sound. As I see it, w/ the CAM 125, I'm anticipating a
modest increase in power, some improvement in reliability, maintenance, and
tweaking which some (NOT ALL!) Rotaxes seem to need, and though costs have
yet to be determined precisely, I don't expect any savings.

I share some of your wife's concerns; I'm giving some thought to going
conventional myself as I think of the satisfying feeling of nailing the
upwind wheel on the runway in a stiff crosswind (sigh)!
Happy landings!

In your respons to Mike Duane to the heavier Cam engine you say " Alex's

Who has approved this weight, and on what grounds, please? Do you have

Fred,
I like your saying. Having given it some thought, I think it suits my
approach also. Otherwise we'd all be flying Cessna 172's.
What part of the NorthWest are these guys working in? Did they make it to
Arlington this past season? Do they plan on being there this coming July?
I think that when anyone comes up with a new way of doing things there is
always a healthy bit of skepticism from those that have gone before and a good
deal of wariness of those coming up. I think this might come across as
naysaying from an entrenched rival and those that support it, but it is well meant
and, I believe, necessary so that all what-ifs and what-abouts come to the
table so people can make an honest evaluation. I think that this will
ultimately provide us with enough alternatives in power plants that the prices
may get
a bit more competitive.
Thanks for all the input.

Just looking for ideas on how I can maneuver the wings during
construction. I have a wing-caddy, but lifting the wing from the shop
table to the caddy needs an extra pair of hands. I also need to flip
the wings over, tilt them etc.. to work on different parts. I was
thinking of suspending from the ceiling, but there doesn't seem to be a
clear attach points on the wings. Any ideas are appreciated.

I used sawhorses and often moved the wings by myself. They are not as
cumbersome as they look. I simply lifted or lowered one end at a time off and
on the
horses. They are easily flipped around on the leading edge while on the floor
then put them back on the sawhorses allowing you to work on the top or
bottom. Handle them at the spar end when you do that and make sure you have a
piece
of carpeting underneath the edge to keep the wings from scuffing.
You can spend a lot of unnecessary time making dollies, suspensions and
caddies that really are not necessary. IMHO

Andrew,
Without the flaps and ailerons attached I was able to lift the wing by myself and
move it about the workshop. I always had a cradle mount at both ends around
the leading edge in case I wanted to put it down. However they were light enough
to lift if you centred yourself at the right position and they were the old
style wings fill up blue foam!! The new ones would be lighter I would think.
I used to put them on saw horses with blue foam underneath and turn them over by
tilting them vertical on the leading edge on the horses and then shift them
to one end and lower them onto the other side.
I had to do this as my children are too young to help and my wife was feed up with
the project anyway so asking her did not create good vibs!!
Cheers,
Tim

Andrew:
I wound up suspending my wings from the ceiling. I took 2 pieces of 2 X 4
for each wing and covered each in carpet. They were each slightly longer
than the widest chord of the wing. Large screw eyes were at the top
surface of each end. Holes were put in the drywall ceiling of the garage
by the ceiling studs at the spacing of the screw eyes. Hardware store
chain was attached to the studs at screw eyes and hung down through the
holes in the ceiling. Spring loaded hook closures were then positioned so
that the 2 X 4's were level an at a convenient height. When installing the
wing only one hook is released and the 2 X 4 swung down. I was able to
lift 1 end of the wing with one hand and swing up the board with the other
and secure the clasp. Having extra lenght of chain available also allowed
me to hang up the top side of the fuselage up there upside down when the
wings weren't there.

--> Europa-List message posted by: "Ronald J. Parigoris" <rparigor@suffolk.lib.ny.us>
I have been using a sand blasting cabinet with glass beads to prepare parts made
from aluminium.
I wash with hot water and Palmolive soap and scotch bright and or brushes before
painting.
I need to paint some steel parts.
How can i clean off the glass beading grunge from Steel?
I tried enamel reducer, even with scotch bright it does not seem to clean real
well.
I tried washing a practice steel part with hot water and Palmolive and it seems
to work well.
I am concerned that it may get surface rust??? I washed the practice part, dried
it and hit it with a heat shrink gun. Don't see any corrosion.
I will be using Dupont self etching primer.
Thx.
