See http://gilles.thesee.free.fr/Ant_XPDR.htm Hopefully I'll post more subsantial info on my website in the near future. By the way, RG 58 coax is no longer used in certified ships. RG 400 is the coax of choice. We have a 5 meter run from panel to the tail. >2) On radio antenna, is the ferrite balloon around the cable mandatory ? > Not at all. Our Bob Archer antenna is in the right wing tip, with BNC break at the wing root and RG 58 coax. We routinely perform radio checks in the 80-100 nautical mile range from FL 50 to 80. The VHF is a Becker AR 4201. All these matters are thoroughly covered on the AeroElectric site www.aeroelectric.com FWIW, Regards, Gilles Thesee Grenoble, France ________________________________ Message 3 _____________________________________ Time: 05:37:14 AM PST US From: "ivor.phillips" Subject: Re: Europa-List: RE: Transponder antenna --> Europa-List message posted by: "ivor.phillips" Its 5 1/2 inches Ivor Phillips XS486 London UK From: Subject: RE: Europa-List: RE: Transponder antenna > --> Europa-List message posted by: > > I don't remember the exact size of the ground plane but it is pretty > small. > 4 to 6 inch diam. It is mounted at the fuselage split line behind the bulkhead on the passenger side and it does not need a ground plane. It works fine. I want to avoid putting it exposed under the belly. My likely choice is a Microair T2000 and I would like not to have to spring for a Bob Archer ($$$), but am told that the stub antenna must (should?) be mounted externally. I've read everything I can in the archives, and asked the UK supplier of the Microair, and still get several different answers. Jim Nelson wrote on 20 Jan 2004 "I mounted mine in the back on the pilots side. I mounted it vertical on three wooden rods which were reduxed to the fuselage. Ran the coax up the pilots side just under the door jamb and on to the transponder. Seems to work fine. No interferance or noised noted." This seems the logical answer, is this the stub (2.5"?) antenna & can you elaborate on the 3 wooden rod mount, please Jim? Anybody know why I shouldn't mount the stub antenna internally (glass is transparent, isn't it?) behind the baggage bay, without being too far from the xpdr unit and without degrading the signal significantly? Any other helpful, cheap, suggestions, please? How can the pressure anywhere in the engine get above that ? As STP is around 30 inches a MAP gauge reading up to 35 is fine. WIth a turbo-charger (914) then the pressure in the manifold CAN exceed ambient and so for a 914 a 50 inch MAP gauge is provided. Secondly. Has anyone fitted an oil-stat in the oil lines to the oil cooler ? Mine is always running cold, even with various baffles/blanking plates around the radiator. An oil stat might help. I had one on my rally car years ago. And if you have what is it and where did you get it ? There is nothing in the ACS catalogue that I have found after a brief search ! It sits in the rear fuselage in midline on the tail counterweight guide at floor level. In this position it is looking ahead pretty much below the level of the engine and related solid objects and has given totally reliable results for last 3 yrs, including test flying a circle at 2000ft , 25 miles out to check continuous radar visibility. Although it is radiating in the loose sense, it's not the radioactive substance type which certainly fries gonads, but just the same sort of radio wave radiation that emerges from the mobile phones that most of the population keep glued to their ear for most of the day! I think 912S engines also need 93 octane gas. Sounds like it would be better for the engine than 100LL alone. Ken Carpenter N 9XS 914T
