Yes you need to flow meters on a 914. Fuel flow down the return line is
controlled by the valve that the flow and return pipes connect to. You
cannot measure the fuel going to the engine so you need to measure the flow
and the return to get the difference which is what the engine is using.

Did you have to put two fuel flow meters on your EIS??
I called them, and they said because it's a 914 and has return fuel that
I needed two of them.

I have to agree with Simon. Mod 60 explicitly states that the sight gauge
is to be retained. If you deletes the sight gauge a) you did not read the
instruction and b) technically your permit to fly is invalid.

The pdf for mod 60 (fuel gauge) seems to suggest that it is not sufficient
to only have the float gauge and that a second method of verification is
required.

The traditional reason for requiring a secondary fuel gauge to a capacitance
gauge, as I understand it, is that a capacitance gauge requires a supply of
elecricity (which is not infallible) and that the embedded electronics are
more or less complex and possibly prone to failure.
I can't see that this implies that two gauges are needed in principle,
regardless of type or that the PFA would drift to this opinion.
A valuable back-up gauge we don't have, but many birds do, is the ability
to peer into the top of the tank to see what's there.

Required or not, IMHO it is prudent to have a sight gauge to verify you are full.
I
have a Monowheel with fuel drains aft of the tank. I will have my sight gauge plumbed
off the right drain up the right to the top ending at filler. Easy for left seat
to
see.

I didn't have any inspections while building. I had an eaa tech counselor
come out and weigh it and look it over before I called for inspection. I had
a DAR inspector do the final inspection. He checked for control movement and
basically just looked over the engine and the rest of the plane. He had a
woman filling out the papers and the whole thing took about 30 minutes. He
said he does quite a few Europas. He just did another one in Zellwood FL the
day before. I don't know who's it was though. Don't know about first flight
yet. I'm gonna take it to the airport and do the running and the taxie
testing first. I was gonna get John Hurst to do the first flight but he
moved to Texas now. I have been flying the Diamond DA20 Eclipse which is
close in flying to the Europa to get used to this type of plane.
The first flight will be a couple weeks from now so I'll decide what I'm
going to do by then.

Dean,
Did you have a DAR inspector for your project while you were building? What
did the Inspector really look for during his inspection? How are you going
to
handle your first flight? Who will do it, is what I'm really asking?
Still a ways away but curious.

I was wondering what the clan thinks of pre-oilers? We installed one
on the Cozy but the unit is BIG and heavy. I found this cursing the web.
http://www.accusump.com/acc_products/acc_units.html
The units are fairly small with no pumps or motors. I emailed the
company and asked about installing on a rotax 914 or 912S and they
said "yes this has been done many times, you will need to tap into a
main oil galley, you can put a sandwich adapter between the oil
filter or tap directly into the block." I will email Rotax dealer
next, but thought this might be especially good for you turbo guys.
Turbos take a beating until the oil get up to pressure...

Hi all,
I'm wondering, how do you intend to install this system ? In a Rotax oil
is SUCKED through the radiator before entering the oil pump, contrary to
ordinary engines where oil is DRIVEN through the radiator downstream of
the oil pump.
I'm still puzzled as to how the donut thing could work in a Rotax where
there is no radiator line near the oil filter.
Any additional details ?
If cold temperature is a problem, why not change to a lighter grade oil
as per the Rotax book, and close the cowl flap ?
To date we've had no problems starting at -10Celsius and warming up
with a 914.
Of course I've kept idling with flap closed until oil reaches 40-50C.

Paul - I've not had any experience yet of the Europa inner tube, but
for us bicycle types who operate up around 80 PSI (5.5 bar) our
biggest friend at tube re-fitting time is talcum powder. Coat the
tube well with it to reduce friction. I generally apply just a few
strokes of the pump before fitting, just enough to keep the tube in
shape without really pressurising it. That helps to avoid getting
anythin trapped between tyre & rim.
Hope that helps.

Rowland
