It looks like the weather at Brunscombe is not going to be that good so
does anyone have an alternative venue in the north of England, if not we
intend to head to Carlisle for lunch?

I still have two items left over from my XS upgrade suitable for Classic
Europas. They are a carbon fibre backplate and a complete painted top
cowl which incorporates the NACA inlet for the plenum chamber mod.
Anyone interested contact me offline at nigelcharles@tiscali.co.uk.

Hi Richard
Should you not be able to fix your tacho I have a spare available. It
tends to overread by about 200rpm at maximum (ie 6000 instead of 5800)
but it can be adjusted if you can be bothered to set it up. If you want
it I would accept about half the going price for it.

Nigel Charles

I find the Apollo SL40 (same as the SL30 minus NAV) excellent. This
radio also has the advantage of providing an extra receiver by being
able to monitor the standby freq -very useful when checking an ATIS or
listening in to a tower freq whilst under the control of another agency.
I use the standard Europa VHF aerial.

Thanks Nigel, but I am not changing the radio. It works well.
I will play with the antenna, and blame the French for not answering me if
that does not work.

Mechanical joints eventually corrode, unless attention is paid to
metal fasteners. Else, it will not alter performance.

The VHF antenna sees the xpondr antenna as a tiny thingy of no
consequence. However, the coax to the xpondr antenna can certainly
annoy a nearby VHF antenna. Further, is your coax from the VHF
antenna running parallel to one of the dipole legs? That's worst case
for trashing a radiating pattern. Must run perpendicular from the
center >= 2 feet, then make any sharp turn.
> 2. Would the various metal items in the rear of the fuselage
degrade...
Malicious devils. The texts tend to show the energy radiating from
the base of the element (the center of a dipole, if such). If not
merely for illustration, I think I can dig that. In the point in an
RF cycle where voltage is highest, it can't xmit squat at the tip, and
therefore does not radiate from there. Voltage and current -- the
heavy lifter -- are 90-deg out of phase, and 90-deg is 1/4 wavelength.
What tuning is all about. Anything near the tip is bad, because that
I guess is where the local "e-field" is at (voltage). Or the near
field, of no use to us, but don't upset it. Besides whacking a bunch
of dB by detuning, we're also creating a crude directional antenna,
meaning the radiation field may not be where ATC is at. Note that
it's easier to visualize xmitting; reception is the precise
reciprocal.
> ...the performance of the antenna if it is mounted
> behind the 'D' panel as illustrated?
Attachments must not come thru the list, but in that location there
can be long perpendicular metal nearby. If on the left side, your
body is in the way for communicating forward. Carbon-based life forms
absorb; trees thoroughly trash GPS. Better might be further back.
The longitudinal stuff will be more in the dipole's center, and put up
with a few dB loss on the curvature of the elements.
I don't see anywhere in the fuselage that's good, though others come
out OK (really just huge, dynamic range of our comm boxes). Mine was
thus "micro'd" in the trailing edge of the rudder. I might suffer
some static buildup, though.
I went upstairs yesterday in the AA-5 to check worst case conditions.
Comm #2 was bought off eBay for $200, connected to a bent whip
antenna; its attachment screws are too rusty to remove; I personally
aligned the box w/o a service manual. :-) At 2,500 AGL, put that
big air carrier field behind me and just keep going, and going. I
don't mean listening to tower; he's not goin' away until well into
Pennsylvania. It's the guys on the ground. Still strong
transmissions must be top mounted antennas. Weak ones, or no response
heard is maybe bottom-mount, or that huge Convention Center bldg, for
the ones at the end of the landing roll on 24L. Or ask Tower for
permission to talk to JetLine 236. A sexy little $50 million RJ with
a foil dipole; that's just so wrong. :-) At 55 miles, it was losing
educational value, and I didn't have all that much fuel aboard!
Something has to be radically wrong, if no joy at like 25 miles.
Reg,
Fred F.

Nigel,
Thanks for the offer. I have now fixed the problem. It was simply a
connection which I had pulled partly apart whilst fitting a new starter
motor and carb heaters last week.

Hi!
I=B9m still moving forward with trimming out my Europa but have an observation
to make that may help others with this task if they do it themselves.
With the Cockpit Module in place and just before the top gets glued on why
not make up the templates or some of the shapes required to upholster the
area. You can even roughly cut out the lining if used for the baggage area
whilst the top of cockpit is available to invert.
Just an idea based on the realisation of how little room there is to work in
some areas when top and Perspex fitted.

Gerry

Good idea , Gerry. I installed all of the linings, carpets, etc. before
putting the top on. Roof liningwith the top inverted etc. It is so much
easier. The only thing to keep in mind is to not glue
some of the edges and to leave extra material, then do a final trim and glue
after fitting the top.

Or the actual service bench experience? Seriously, one need
only to look at the front of the box to know it's
freq-synthesized, computer-controlled, Rube Goldberg machine
that is actually quite reliable as a basic design. A dip in
a range of freqs requires failure of certain circuits, but
they would fail in ways which are inconsistent with this,
like completely. One manual has massive Yes-No flow charts
for trouble isolation. This symptom's not even in there! A
shop can check flat response in minutes, but they like to
charge the full hour in the States, like everywhere else
there's a diagnosis fee these days.

Subject: | Buying Avionics off eBay |
--> Europa-List message posted by: "Fred Fillinger" <n3eu@comcast.net>
It has occurred to me I now should describe the world of
eBay, so nobody gets burned. The Narco COM 120 I bought was
actually funny. Very good cosmetic condition; tested great
on the bench. The seller said "working when removed for
upgrade." They love that last word, because it implies no
other reason to replace. Well, it had a thermal fault.
Showed up after 45 minutes, like Old Faithful. So "upgrade"
can really mean just replacing a bad box.. He wasn't
fibbing; because it was removed "cold" and of
course...worked when removed!
A crazy one was a nav receiver. According to several
repairs tags stuffed inside, in Spanish, it spent much of
its life in Mexico. Well, there's a licensed repair guy
down there named Pancho, who must rip stuff out of old
Emerson table radios for parts. Wrong value, but circuit
operation would be unaffected, and probably he knew that.
But an oversized part, requiring a horrid installation
method.
So this radio winds up north over the border in Texas,
offered by a guy who eBay resells a lot of this stuff. You
can tell when such a guy knows avionics, by the wording in
his eBay offerings. Most everything is "AS IS," but when a
guy like this says "working when removed," it means the guy
who sold it to him said it did, like maybe even a Pancho.
This guy only occasionally says "unknown condition." If no
one told him OK when removed, well a guy who knows avionics
can check this box in minutes for basic function, so
"unknown condition" means...it doesn't work! It didn't; but
for $25 I gambled a circuit board I needed would be OK, and
was after repairing old Pancho's handiwork.
Have four other eBay items that don't work; two that do.
Only takes enough other eBay bidders to be suspicious enough
I won on a very low bid. Only one seller described exactly
what was wrong with it.
Reg,
Fred F.

I'm at the point of fitting the outrigger cuffs from the monowheel go faster kit.
Uuuuunfortunately I had these painted prior to drilling the holes and can no
longer see the scribe marks that indicate where to drill.
Could someone with a monowheel go faster kit please measure the following for me..
Using the top of the cuff as a reference, project the centreline of the ourigger
arm down the cuff. Project a line perpendicular to this line to intersect the
centre of the scribe marks.
Measurement 1: Top of cuff to intersect line
Measurement 2: Length of intersect line from centreline to scribe mark
Thanks
Tony
Wings almost ready to fly. Electrics almost done. Mod 70 almost done.
Discovering that fitting everything together after filling and painting is quite
"entertaining" :)
