I have done some more research and come to the | conclusion that a 406Mhz PLB is a good idea as this can be picked up by | satellites. McMurdo do a compact model called the Fastfind which | combines 406Mhz with a 121.5 transmitter to aid with search & rescue. | Again aimed at sailors but can also be used by aviators. The RRP of | these is somewhere over 400 but Mailspeed Marine (mail order | chandelers) are selling them at 299 at present. Seems a bit expensive | but I guess it wouldn't seem so bad if one was floating round in the | middle of the English channel waiting for someone to find you. I think I | shall bite the bullet and buy one of these. | | Richard Iddon G-RIXS | | Do not archive | --> Europa-List message posted by: "David Joyce" | <davidjoyce@doctors.org.uk> | | Richard, I got a 121.5 locator to hang round the neck, water activated | or | hand switched from a Sailing store in Pwllheli for around 50. I don't | think | they have them any longer so no point in going there but it might be | worth | looking in any ship's chandlers in your area, as mariners are probably a | lot | more likely to end up in the sea than we are! Regards. David | | > --> Europa-List message posted by: "Richard Iddon" <riddon@sent.com> | > | > A little off topic but I am thinking of investing in an Emergency | > Locator transmitter (ELT) or personal locator beacon (PLB) Any advice | or | > experience? | > | > Richard Iddon G-RIXS Richard et al, Regarding the 406MHz beacon, the givvermint here is planning a replacement of the 121.5 model with this, to the fury of most aviators in the lightplane field because of cost - usually 'bumped' by having giv't stick its finger in. Our EAA chapter had a transport boffin in to discuss at the Hamilton museum, wherein he showed the average delay in reception and reaction on 121.5 US or Russki satellites orbitting to be about 30-90 minutes. He then activated the 406 and we got a tel call from SaR HQ at Trenton about 150 mi. east within three minutes. They put the call on the loudspeaker and we were pretty well impressed. They could have had a helicopter or C-130 enroute with jumpers within 10-15 minutes, knew 'our' personal details and exact position. Several years grace, but the time frame will surely drop the cost from thousands to hundreds and difference should make it most attractive. It's too late paying for one while thrashing in the Channel even if you do remember your credit card number. Cheers, Ferg | > Do not archive

Not that it's very accurate anyway; a helicopter would get to within 2 miles, then spend half an hour finding you in that circle. You'd need to check that the marine versions are compatible with the specific requirements of the (UK) aeronautical types. --> Europa-List message posted by: "Richard Iddon" <riddon@sent.com> Thanks Duncan, an interesting document. McMurdo put out some info on their web site at http://www.mcmurdo.co.uk/?Menu=79&Page=/Contents/ListNews.asp&ID=259 I will, however, phone the Aeronautical rescue mission control centre in Kinloss and check if the marine types are acceptable and post my findings. --> Europa-List message posted by: "Mike Parkin" <mikenjulie.parkin@btinternet.com> Richard, I found this page - <http://www.seathree.demon.co.uk/plb/plb-3.html> which may be of interest. The pertinent part is the following extract I think. UK. 406 PLBs are legal in the UK - but only for maritime use. The PLB must be covered by a ship's radio licence (so you need to have a boat), and must be registered with HMCG. It's illegal to use a PLB on land. PLBs have to be approved in accordance with the EU R&TTE directive, and must meet the UK Radio Interface Requirement. Until recently there was no single EU technical standard for PLBs (ETSI 302 152 - issued, but currently not harmonized). The UK currently has no single-authority SAR system for emergencies on land. There's always a government department somewhere that wants to rain on your parade!!! regards, Mike ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard Iddon" <riddon@sent.com> Subject: RE: Europa-List: locator beacon
