Thanks Mike, a useful article.
As you say, officially it is only for maritime use. However, I phoned
the maritime base for registering the unit and they were quite happy for
me to register it with them. Also I note now that Adams aviation are
offering the same unit (for 446 pounds, I paid 299 at a chandelery).
They tell me that for aviation the unit should be registered with RAF
Kinloss so I have sent them an email and am awaiting their reply.
As the unit is registered to a person rather than a specific vessel I
can't see any problem. I shall take it with me and will certainly not
hesitate to deploy it if the need arises, whether on land or water. I
can always argue the toss later.

Is it a very bad idea to bond the panel in, and keep the inserts as removable sub-panels?
Could i use camloc type hardware for it?

RAF Kinloss confirmed that there is no problem using the PLB in an
aircraft and, as I have registered the unit with the maritime
authorities, I do not need to register it with them also.

I suppose the document at

describes the different protocols betwix marine and aviation; I couldn't be
bothered to read it all, but couldn't see a good practical reason that would
preclude a boat owner using his beacon in a small light aircraft! Although
SAR may have difficulty in believing there was a distressed yacht in
Switzerland.

Jos,
While I didn't bond my panel, I am using sub panels. They are attached
using standard anchor nuts and AN screws, like those provided with the
kit. Works just fine...

Jos,
Are you aware of the Europa Club Mod for holding the Panel in ? If not,
I suggest you have a look at it because it is an excellent idea IMO.
Makes it very easy to install and remove. (when there is no wires
connected that is !)

Jos,
I second the notion. The mod puts the bolts fixed to the inside of the panel
forward through the firewall with the mounting nuts in the engine
compartment. This allows the whole panel to slide back and (thanks to Nigel)
is a real advantage for maintenance or major revision.

I bonded my panel (custom made) in and then make each side from plate removable.
All the wiring is going through round cannon plugs. I can take the pilot side
out in 7 minutes, you can time me !
I like it this way. There has been several time I needed to do work in behind,
and out it came. Easy. I used #6 screws with the nutplates bonded in to fasten
it in.
