My questions now are: Which NACA vent have you used? What is the approximate best position on the fin taking the torque tube as a reference for measurements? Which CAT or SCAT duct hose have you used inside the fin? and the most important question: What is your experience with it? Thanks Michael Grass A266 Trigear Detroit, MI Got finally all ribs for the landing gear in and now dreaming about putting on the top ;<) ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 09:11:42 AM PST US Subject: Re: Europa-List: panel and inserts From: "Jos Okhuijsen" --> Europa-List message posted by: "Jos Okhuijsen" Thx for all the answers. Before i even started building i had a look through the club mods. This instrument panel mod (Thanks Nigel) was then so far away that i managed to forget all about it. The lesson learnt is that it pays to look through the documentation every once in a while. This club mod promises to do about that what i had in mind. Cliff: Your panel just looks to good for me to try to imitate. But i'll try to sqeeze some air duct and defrost vents in. Anyone with real life experience or opinion? Thanks in advance. Well done Trevor. You did well to come through the mayhem of Europa M I Ltd failure where many others would have thrown in the towel. Whilst you now have a very expensive Europa I for one wish that you have many a happy safe hour flying it thereby recouping some happy times from the nightmare you suffered. There would be nothing inherent in that design for better performance, so for $125 you save the bother of constructing one and fussing over tuning it. For both brand of xponder dipoles you cited, a dipole wastes energy in a direction of no use to you. Although there's enough "slop" in the xponder/FAA system so as not to be noticed, a 1/4-wave stub antenna and a small ground plane should work better. Most of Archer's designs appear to be modifications of designs other than a dipole (Meander line, or J-Pole). What they likely do, besides more compactness to maybe cause less installation grief from nearby metal, is likely mitigate comparatively minor issues (the balun; impedance match). So if they perform noticeably better in a given installation, that's why. Antenna's do not do magic, whatever complicated they are, or whatever price somebody pays for a few pieces of bent copper, or whatever fancy name they go by. The more complicated they are, the more unexpected behaviour they will expose. Therefore, save your money, do not buy any of the excellent examples of money for nothing, and do the factory proposed antenna. Might as well fix a tape on the bottom of the fuse for NAV, and get the cheapest (Bob Archer?) for your transponder. I have seen a few europa's, and they happened to all have the copper tape trick in the tail. No complaints from the users, everybody met was happy with them. Now please copper tape owners, back me up a bit eh? I have copper tape antennae for VHF (rudder stern post), VOR/ILS (under glass skin on right wing upper surface) and a VHF(FM) one for the Radio/CD (glassed onto fuselage wall). The SSR antenna is a Bob Archer 'lollipop' with a 5" aluminium ground plane. All systems have worked fine since fitted. (Touch wood). I think the quality of avionics that you buy are more important than who made the antennae. regards, Mike Do not archive. have seen a few europa's, and they happened to all have the copper tape trick in the tail. I just tried it and I highly recommend this product, it works immediately and cleans down to the shine. Here is the product information: K & N Air Filter Cleaner in the 12 FL OZ pump spray bottle part number 99-0606. Position wise, mark the position of the ribs that go inside the tail and you will have a good idea of the vent's position. You will also have to see how the tubing will be run forward. I installed a channel approx. 4" wide by 1" tall. I formed a round entrance to this channel to which I attached the tubing. I can't send you any pix for now because I'm still on vacation. But might make it home by the end of this week and could forward these to you if necessary. Good luck. Mike Duane Redding, CA XS Conventional Gear
