I would like to use an Andair FS20X2 gas valve with a 914 Rotex - do I need the
valve version with the return lines? It appears you do not need a valve on the
return line - just a straight shot to the reserve tank.
On the Jamarperformance brake cylinders (the one supplied by the factory for the
finger brakes) do I need two brake reservoirs?
Brake fluid - where do I get silicon brake fluid? I assume this is the way to go
with the Jamar/Matco parking brake/factory trigear brakes. Any ideas on the
type of brake lines to use? Are race car quality worth the extra expense?
Thanks for any help

NO - there is only one connector for a reservoir and it
goes into both
master cylinder bores

It is - in theory ! DOT 5.0. Not DOT 5.1 or 4.0 or 3.0.

I have recently bought a share in G-ROOV.
Time considerations stopped me building but of course I pay for this
in lacking knowledge of this great aeroplane.
so a few questions to which answers would be very gratefully received.
1 we have a 914 engine. This uses two electrical pumps in
parallel. this to me does not seem the happiest arrangement and I am
not clear on issues such as routine maintenance and replacement (one
or both will fail one day), use of the pumps (leave them both on,
activate both for landings and T/O only?). Is this installation
optimised for safety or have we moved on?
2 on the subject of fuel, we have a capacitance gauge fitted.
Shall we say, I trust it less than I would a gauge in a Piper and
that is really saying something. So at the moment I fill the aircraft
full and count down the time with a huge safety margin. I still hate
to see a gauge reading 25% full when I know it is actually topped up.
How to get this gauge working or are we better off using a sight glass?
3 Now on the subject of instruments: there is a problem with the
altimeter (intermittent) in that it oscillates through about 200
feet. OK, not the end of the world but irritating. this smacks of a
damping issue, any ideas?
4 still on instruments, the AI is temperamental. Most of the time
it is fine but occasionally indicates climb in S&L flight and
sometimes bank in S&L. Well, do I just open up and take a look? I
know these things are pretty sensitive and my first thought is that
this is specialist bench work. we have a similar issue when setting
the DI through North (only) ...should I 'dive in' or get a specialist
involved immediately?
5 Finally a flyng issue. I realise the aircraft is very sensitive
in pitch. however, I find that trimming never quite takes all the
pressure off the stick. Consequently I sometimes try adjusting power
a little just get to the trim perfect. Otherwise I am either just too
nose down or just too nose up. It is a small point and I can live
with it but just wondered if experienced Europa pilots had any comments.
6 Finally finally, having not built the plane i would like to know if
there are any courses or reading material to help people new to PFA
and Europa flying in particular. It is knowledge of the mechanical
and electrical aspects I really need.
thanks in anticipation

Subject: Europa-List: Advanced Aircraft Antenna Vs Bob Archer.
Hello Group: I'm looking for recommendations on the COM, NAV and Transponder antenna's
made by Advanced Aircraft compared to Bob Archer designs when used in
a composite aircraft. Anyone with real life experience or opinion?
Thanks in advance. Brian Skelly Texas Europa # A276 TriGear
>>>>>
Hi Brian,
I have used Bob Archer antennas and RST Engineering ( http://www.rst-engr.com/index.html ) copper tape antennas with good success. All of these antennas work well.
COM 1 = Bob Archer #6 in fin
NAV = Bob Archer # 7 in port wing lower surface ahead of aileron
Transponder = Bob Archer # 5 aft of baggage bulkhead at mid height on starboard
side
Glide slope and Marker beacon antennas = RST copper tape mounted on the rear fuselage
floor
ELT antenna = RST copper tape aft of baggage bulkhead at mid height on port side.
Cheers, John

I have a 912S engine. Anyway with the 912S a return line is NOT used from the
gascolator. It runs directly from the carbs back to the tank, with a restrictor
in it.

careful, use only DOT 5 and NOT NOT NOT DOT 5.1 This is very confusing. Here
in the Netherlands it was a hard job to get two small bottles of it, but I finally
succeeded at a Harley Davidson supply company.

Hi Kevin,
You will find a lot of information underthe technical tab of the factory website at http://www.europa-aircraft.co.uk Even if it would be an overshoot, you will be informed of all (safety) mods and other issues.
There is an update on the pumps on the 914, nowadays they are put in series with
check valves. The second pump should be on at start and landing only. That is
in the manual, and a copy of that should be on board.
A capacitance gauge is quite reliable, but not if the tank contains some water,
or if it is calibrated for mogas and you are using 100LL or mixtures of the both.
How to calibrate depends on the make and model, i would expect those instructions
to be somewhere in the plane's documentation.
If it's only the altimeter oscillating and the VSI is constant, i would replace
the instrument. Otherwise check the static and it's connections.
For the AI, i would kill the thing before it kills me. I guess repair for such
a device is a: expensive b: unreliable. Do it yourself here is probably not very
advisable either. Aren't these instruments certified and checked with annuals?
Trim, no idea, or maybe it's the issue of a too fast reacting trim motor. Matronics
has a governor, costs about 80$ that could be usefull, i have ordered one,
but am still years from flying, i will report about it later ok?
Regards,
Jos Okhuijsen

The DOT 5.0 is available at your local Auto Zone at $7.99 a bottle.
Takes less than a bottle to fill the system. The expense was a
non-issue for me. I've been using the nylon lines from ACS. No
problems at all. I do suggest you get the all metal ferrel nuts to
anchor them, though. No leaky...

Mike,
There are some indepth pics of my installation at my build site.
http://www.n55xs.com - go to the June 2004 entries. The vent is one of
the larger ones that ACS has in their catalog. The placement is behind
the vertical bulkhead, 7" on center above the stabilator top. The pics
also show how I built the duct system from fiberglass and bonded it to
the inner fuse. I've got 35 hours on "Baby Blue" and the vents work
very well...

Hi All,
Dot 5 fluid is the way to go, but don't get it anywhere near your plane
until you have finnished the painting.
I just finnished a Europa for a customer, the brake system had already been
filled, and bled with Dot 5, during that process, some fluid had got onto
the fuselage lower surface...... you should have heard the expleteves bouncing
around the workshop, when that came to light, during application of the
Barrier coat...... it took three of us two days to get the fluid off with various
special cleaning agents... +cellulose thinners... +scouring powder... and
lots of elbow grease / blisters / running eyes... just a warning, guys.
Cheers,
Nev.
