How extensively does anyone else's aircraft get stained by exhaust? Mine
picks up a pale beige streak going almost to the trailing edge of the
wing, including a covering of the inboard flap hinge cover. It seems to
come off with water and a sponge however.
On a related topic, the fuselage in that area was seriously heat damaged
soon after I got the aircraft by a combination of, a) misaligned exhaust
stub (pointing straight back), b) sideslipping under power (to descend
fast from altitude without over cooling the engine). Pretty dim, really,
but someone out there might still learn from this.

Willie,
Out of interest, what's your engine? The reason I ask is that I thought one
of the quoted advantages of the Rotax is that the water-cooled heads mean
there is no shock-cooling issue to worry about.
Kind regards,
Jeremy

Hello All
Sorry this is slightly off subject, but I have a new unused Jeppeson
flight bag for sale if anyone is interested. It's the big one with lots
of pockets and detachable headset bags each end, so you can carry both
your headsets with you. I am looking for 40 ukp for it. They are in the
catalogues for about 90ukp. If it is of interest to anyone, contact me
off line at alan@kestrel-insurance.com
Cheers
Alan

It's a 912S. You're right that the liquid cooled engine should be more
robust with shock cooling than an air cooled engine. However, there's
still a minimum posted temperature limit and on a freezing January day
descending from 10,000 feet (Avgas, of course) the temps were falling
off the bottom of the scale with the engine at idle.
If I want to sideslip for any reason now, though generally I avoid it, I
do it yawed to port so that the exhaust gas (hopefully) is flushed away
by the wake and not aimed at the fuselage. Also, I have pinned the
exhaust stub so that it is not free to swivel back in case the clamp
comes loose.
Happy Landings!
Willie

I have seen this light gray haze after burning 100LL too. I thought it was the
lead in the gas.
Back when I was first flying there was some black stains from the exhaust too.
I have not seen that kind of exhaust for the last 50 hours though.
The exhaust gasses will damage the fus and / or cowling if the muffler comes loose.
Be very careful to get it fitting correctly. The first muffler I got with
my kit was not built the same as the replacement I bought last winter. The
new one has worked with out a single problem. The inlet port on the new muffler
are a little further apart foe and aft.
