Subject: | Rotax 914 question? |
--> Europa-List message posted by: "Alan Burrows" <alan@kestrel-insurance.com>
I have recently been told that I should reduce manifold pressure one
inch per minute in the decent to aid cooling of the turbo. Does anyone
else adopt this practice and is it necessary ?
I was also told that I should always let the engine run for at least 5
mins before shut down ?
Any thoughts on this please?
Alan

Hi Alan,
Didn't know that one. It seems strange to me since during descent the
engine never delivers more than 75 % power, and cooling is better.
Besides, during circuit and landing the engine is at very low settings.
With our 914 powered MCR four seater we don't have to re-open the
cowling flaps during circuit.

The book says "a few minutes". Since during landing, rollout and taxi
the engine is at idle and rather cool I usually don't have to idle more
than one or two minutes before temperatures are stabilised for shut down.
Of course if you've just run up the engine at full throttle, you may
have to wait longer before shutting down.
FWIW,

You run the engine to reduce the turbo bearing temperatures, If you shut
down quickly after working the engine hard there is a risk of turning the
oil to carbon and destroying them over time,
Once the engine is shut down the oil ceases to flow through the turbo
bearings,

Hi All
I am about to order some more of the battery operated fuel transfer
pumps as I have been asked by several people if I can get anymore. If
you want one please contact me so I know how many to order. The price
for this next lot is 28 ukp each incl postage to UK address (a little
more if you are abroad). For those of you that haven't seen them. They
fit perfectly into the top of a jerry can so no more spillages when
filling up the aircraft. They will also work with almost any other kind
of fuel container. I find mine is excellent to use.

Hi Peter.
According to my records the Laddingford Fly-in is taking place this weekend. I
wonder if the arrangements can be confirmed please and posted to the Europa site.
It looks as though the weather should be up for it!
Cheers. Bryan

Bryan,
on behalf of Peter, who does not monitor this site, the date for the
Laddingford Fly-in the the Europa Flyer was incorrect. (Shame because as you
have mentioned the weather is going to be good).
The correct date is September the 24th to coincide with Pete's 60th
birthday.
However if you or any other Europas would like to come to Laddingford this
weekend, then please do (landings are free for Europas). I personally will
not be there as I am working over the whole weekend and I know Pete is off
to Nigel Charles on Saturday but may well be there on the other days.

Thanks for that Dave.
In that case we will look forward to the 24th of September. Just as well we
checked I suppose.
Please make a point of booking really nice weather for that day, so that we
can all make it.
Best regards. Bryan
PS. Are you sure that Peter wants us to know he is that old.

Hi David
Please can you confirm you received the briefing sheet? You should
receive another email this evening after the met check. The weather is
looking good for tomorrow.
Regards
Nigel
