Well it was news to me. I was summoned by Her Majesty's valiant Customs
and Excise investigation team to explain my temerity in seeking to
reclaim duty paid on exported fuel, depriving Mr Brown of the funds to
pursue the Governments urgent crackdown on elderly gentlemen at party
conferences.
In the course of Her Majesty's Finest checking my story and subjecting
my fuel receipts and logbook to forensic examination
I have discovered that the rate for "ultra low sulphur unleaded petrol"
(Mogas to you) is 47.1p/Litre, rather more attractive than Avgas at
28.1P/Litre.
Now, not a lot of people know that. Well not me anyway.
Another reason to pull out the Europa and motor over to foreign shores.

When I was doing taxi testing on N55XS, I was experiencing very high
coolant temps. So I flushed the 50/50 glycol/water mix, lowered the
collant radiator about 1" and installed a rubber seal to the bottom, so
that it would seal to the cowl. I then installed the Evans coolant.
Not only did the boiling go away, but the temps actually dropped, while
still allowing the oil temp to to get up, in cool weather. This is a
much better option, than dropping the oil cooler, in my opinion. At any
rate, I have zero problems with coolant temps...

Paul, go to http//www.n55xs.com and then to the June 26, 2004 entry to
see what I did to solve the pressurization problems. I get excellent
air flow and there is a slight positive pressure in the aft of the fuse,
which keeps any stray exhaust from entering through the flap holes...

Hi Paul
I have seen people obtain negative pressure in the aft compartment by using
Bernoulli device called an "extractor." I had drawings of it but cannot
find them. It looks simple to make and of negligible drag. You might find
it with a Google search.

What are your oil and head temps running at in cruse and climb? I did
almost the same thing with the coolers.

As a lot of our Europa friends know, Augustene and I built our XS mono
wheel and flew it for the first time way back in April, 2000.
For the past year and a half we have been at it again. This time we have
built a Van's RV-7A with the Superior XP IO-360 engine and a Hartzel
C/S prop. The panel holds the Blue Mountain Avionics EFIS-1 system.
Our son Bob had first flight honors today at 4:00 PM.Oct 17th 2005,
N112B flew about 35 minutes on the first flight at Leesburg, Florida.
(LEE)
I'm not sure which is more nerve wracking, doing the flight, or setting
on the ground watching your son do the flight.

CHT: 250 - 275
Oil Temp: 190 - 220
Water Temp: 180 - 225
These are observed in take off, climb and cruise. Haven't had any
indication of overheating in any flying or taxiing configuration.
Engine is a 912S with 89 hours on it. Latest flight was a 700+ mile
cross country (each way) this weekend. 13 + hours, running both 93
octane MOGAS and 100LL. Only problem experienced was removing the ice
from the wings, before leaving WV, this morning... ;)

Very interesting reading. Thanks ! I wish I knew enough to design and build a
new lower cowling for my XS. What I did is better than stock, but people tell
me the cowling could be better.

CHT: 250-275. Although not strictly overheating, 275 is the Max CHT on a
914 - is it different on a 912S?
