Hi Cliff and thanks for the Throttle Cable Tip. The length as supplied
(1.6mtrs) is supposed to be spot on so as to leave a high loop within the engine
bay. Did you find that the problem was solved when you cut out this loop?
Originally the old cables worked fine at this same length and I only changed
them because I thought they may have become internally worn, but this seems
not to be the case.
Do you remember if you cut them to any specific length?
Best wishes.
Patrick

Hi
I had a similar problem with my cables, which had been cut to length.
It turned out that the bolt which connected the inboard ends of the
cables to the throttle lever was a bit too tight. This did not allow
the ends of the throttle cable to swivel properly and caused a kink in
the wire before it entered the outer sheath. All of this is cockpit end
to avoid confusion. It took about 100 hours to show up.

Thanks Pete.
I don't think that I have a problem like that but I will check again next
time I get to the aeroplane.

Patrick,
I had the same problem with my Rotax 914, I cured it by replacing the cables with
solid wire which I had made, any cable manufacturer can do this.

Having just fitted two new (massively expensive) throttle cables to cure the
apparent problem of 'stiction', I find that nothing has changed,
Despite being meticulously careful in the fitting (no kinks etc) and
following the build manual instructions, I cannot find a way to get the throttle
cables to operate properly i.e. the throttle will not open when the lever is
moved forward as the throttle lever spring does not overcome the friction
between inner and outer.
Any suggestions for a solution (stronger springs, oil??) would be welcomed.

Jack - that seems a sensible and logical solution. Presumably you had to
run the cable via pulley wheels or similar? Any more info would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Patrick,
I am working out of my head now, the system stays original i.e. same throttle connection
and carb connection. No pulley wheels, all stays the same ,even the
route from the throttle position through the firewall to the carbs.Pull out the
original cable and replace it by the solid wire.
Cable supplier will crimp for you the cable eye to the wire at the throttle side.
I also use a solid wire for the chokes, you then can be sure the choke is pressed
shut when its not required. The wire has the same diameter is very flexible,
runs smoothly in the sheath but difficult to make very sharp bends, and
that seems to work great in my machine. I have now flown 150 hours.
Success Jack

Greetings all,
Somebody mentioned cockpit return air vents the other day and I thought I'd
chime in because I found a very nice plastic vent that works well for a return
air vent in the "D"
panel. I found this vent in a woodworking catalog and at $2.99 the price is
right.

Pending replies from on high, I am abandoning the stainless steel device for
a phenolic phenomenon phrom Graham (I hope). How it could be stainless when
my blood decorated it, I cannot think. In sleepier times I will amend its
design to more easily accomodate the space available, as a spare.
However, many thanks to those who went before. It is proof again of the
value of unselfish peers.
Happy landings,

Patrick and Ferg
I cut the cables to the throttle and chock on advice from Florida. On both my plane
and on Bob's , I roughed the cables smoothly left and right with the best
possible smoothest bends to the carbs. Then disassembled the cable so I could
cut the outside shield without nicking the center wire. (the end fitting un
screw). It seemed to make sense to have as little cable as possible to have the
least friction.
To cut the steel, I used the "cut-off" disks that fit in my Dremal Motor Tool.
Lubrication is critical too. I recommend a white grease (lithium Teflon) to
lube it up.

Thanks Cliff - another good idea and what you have to say bears out much of
what I have learned from other people. I thought I must have done something
stupid when I fitted new cables but many have replied who have had the same
problem , so I am feeling better.!
Glad I joined this forum - lots of nice helpful people out there.
