Hi Jeff,
I have a Bob Archer ELT antenna mounted behind the bulkhead on the
horizontal split line on the passenger side. It works well. However, on
about 3 occasions in 450 hours I have had ATC controllers advise that
they have lost the transponder signal. I assume this was caused by
temporary line of sight shielding to their receiver by some aircraft
component. The correct signal has always returned after some time.
If I had to do it again, I would probably install a 'cocktail stirrer'
ELT antenna on the belly.
Cheers, John

Thanks to all that responded to my ELT question. Behind the starboard seat it is.
Now can you tell me where you all mounted the antenna? I should have put this
one in the first question.
Thanks!! Jeff A258 N128LJ/Gold Rush

Hi all, seeing that the forum is quiet at the moment, I have another
silly question for the guys who have fitted the rear nav light to the
rudder. How did you route the wire though the rudder?
Thanks in anticipation.

John,
If you mount a "cocktail stirrer", don't forget to add a ground plane. Some 10x10
cm alu will do.

John,
Are you talking about the ELT or transponder antenna ? Why would a 'cocktail
stirrer' be better when you are sitting crashed on the ground.

Danny,
I heated up a bit of rod and pushed it through the blue foam. I then
drilled a small hold in the back of the rudder to pass the wires through.

John,
If your talking about your transponder antenna then I had to move my
transponder antenna from behind the bulkhead. I had a spike antenna mounted
to a 150 x 150 ground plane, but I would often get complaints from ATC when
I was flying towards there facility.
I installed a Bob Archer antenna behind the mass balance weight assembly as
far back into the tail cone as I could get it and I haven't had any
complaints since.

Concerning an ELT antenna: I just used a length of prepared
coax, RG-58, BNC connector on one end end at least (e.g.,
allelectronics.com, cheap). Separate the shield and center
conductor for a length of exacty 21.5 inches, making a
dipole.
Now I may be cheap when it comes to antennas, especially for
worthless ELT unless you fly over really remote and harsh
terrain, but not when it comes to my MFJ-259B antenna
analyzer. Not particularly cheap, so I get some use out of
it. This kludge on an antenna checked out perfectly at
121.5.
Without a "balun," the feedline shield will radiate a bit.
MFJ-259B doesn't detect that. The mitigator is the fact
that a dipole, within five feet of the ground, will radiate
sharply upward, about 45-deg at least. A monopole whip
antenna on a flat ground plane won't quite do that for you.
That's likely to be the situation of the "crashed" fuselgage
w/r/t to earth.
In installing the coax antenna to the fuselage side, like
with RTV silicone, have the two poles about a 30-deg angle
from vertical -- further fills in the natural void to
upstairs satellites or search planes, if the dipole legs
were in a straight line.
Reg,
Fred F.

Kevin,
I have found flying my Europa in Wisconsin in the dead of winter a bit too
cold for me. Its okay on a clear day, but if its over cast and below zero
then I get cold. Maybe its god's way of telling me that this Aussie boy is
too far from home :o)
I built cabin heat for it based of Dave Andersons design. Prompted by your
note I have put a few pictures up on my WEB site. Click on the side bar
under "Flying experiences" at http://europa363.versadev.com/
