pretty central so I suggest there at 12.00. Voucher in Pilot.

Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone had put in a vertical card compass in there panel
and been able to successfully adjust the offsets.
Paul,
I was not able to get mine to give satisfactory readings when panel mounted
so I moved it into the overhead position. One problem when swinging the compass
in a monowheel is keeping the card vertical. It is very prone to sticking
if the card is out of true. I eventually got satisfactory readings while flying
by using a GPS on a very still day.

Hi Paul,
Did just that with mine, couldn't get it to hold steady and finally mounted
it overhead. There was just too much radio interference.

We have a vertical card compass in G-IANI as the co-pilot (wife) has trouble
reading standard compasses.
My summary is that mine is a cantankerous beast prone to sticking despite
being vertical. With adjustment it eventually gives a true reading when it
feel so inclined. Apart from that its fine.
Conversely Dave Bosonworth has the same model and it works reasonably well.

Greetings All,
Teflon tape is a wonderful product for many things but it is not
recommended
for fuel lines. The tape has a tendency to shred and would likely clog a
carb if
downstream from a filter.
The approved product is teflon paste instead.
There are many A/C Service Buttelins on the web to attest to this

Hi Paul,
We have one in N135TD which works just fine. They do tend to stick a
little when the engine is not running. The compass mechanism has a
finite amount of drag which takes a little engine vibration to break it
loose at small heading deviations from the current indication. I have
heard it said that vertical card compasses may be too jerky when
installed in 6-cylinder engined planes, because they are too smooth to
supply the break-out vibration needed.
We have mounted ours in the main panel, just above the recess for the
gear retraction lever, being careful to keep that area clear of
ferro-magnetic equipment.
Also, please note that all compasses, not just vertical card, can show
different readings with the engine off vs on, so do your compass
calibration with the engine running (which then gets rid of the
'stickiness').
Regards,
Terry Seaver

Subject: | Rotax power plants for sale |
--> Europa-List message posted by: "Bruce" <bruce@justbruce.com>
Holiday Greetings:
Pardon me for a blatant commercial message, but many of you may be
interested in a Rotax deal that has been offered no where else. A retired
engineer friend is selling some bits from his lab that were left over when
he retired. This pile of stuff includes five (5) new Rotax power plants
that were not needed during the course of a high-altitude aviation research
project he and his company performed a few years ago.
If you are interested, please CONTACT HIM DIRECTLY (DO NOT contact me as I
have no additional information other than that below. DON'T BE SILLY AND
RESPOND TO THIS LIST as he will never see it here).
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> DAVEDENT@COMCAST.NET <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
According to my notes (which may have some inaccuracies)
1. These are all 1997 vintage engines, but according to the U.S.
distributor, new ones are substantially the same engine.
2. They are in their original Rotax packing cases.
3. They are stock engines exactly as Rotax sold them. These are not custom
military versions.
4. These engines are new and have not been run.
5. These engines were just moved last week from Southern California to
Livermore Airport just east of San Francisco where they can be inspected.
He has 2 of the 912 (NOT 912S) models. Current cost new he believes is now
around $12,400. He is offering these at $10,000.
He has 2 of the 914 models. Current cost new he believes is around $23,000.
He is offering these at $18,000.
He has 1 additional 912 that had been modified with some additional parts
and he is in the process of removing those parts and replacing them with the
original items that had been removed from that engine. I don't remember any
other details on that engine but price will probably be about the same as
the other 912.
I have no idea how flexible he is on pricing so contact him directly with
any questions. Please note that Dave did some research on the cost of used
and new Rotax engines and believes his prices are fair and realistic. These
engines just came on the market and have been offered no where else so a
quick cash offer may get you a little bit better deal unless Rotax raises
their prices again. His personal preference is to finalize purchases after
the beginning of the New Year.
You Rotax fans may be interested to know that Dave's triple-stage turbo
charger and the other modifications that his lab created allowed the 914s to
output 80 horsepower at 80,000 feet and 65 horsepower at 90,000 feet.

Hi. I am new to the forum and newish to Europa ownership. Our group brought a second
hand classic and have no build experience. The plane is powered by a Rotax
912 and has flown about 130 hours. We are experiencing great difficulties in
getting it started on these cold days we have had here in southeast England.
Any advise would be appreciated.
Happy Christmas to you all.

Hi Andrew and welcome to the fold,
I've quoted your questions and resent it, it seem that your not on the matronics
email list, so your questions was not rebroadcast out as email.
1) If you would like to be on the Matronics email list go here:
http://www.matronics.com/subscription/
enter your email address ( preferable the same one as you use on EuropaOwners )
Scroll down until you find the Europa list, click subscribe, and hit enter.
2) Click search on EuropaOwners:
http://www.europaowners.org/search.php
enter, "912 cold start" click search all terms, hit enter. you should get 20 to
30 posts on cold starts.
C) Go to Andrews archive and search:
http://www.sarangan.org/europa_forum/2005-12/index.html
(Andrew has more history than me)
d) If you need to see how something on the Europa is put together go to:

Check out some of the history and see if that helps.

Hi Andrew,
Have you checked that the throttle is COMPLETELY closed (and 'choke' out)
before start?
Others, more knowledgable that I, may explain that the 'choke' isn't a
choke but has another action on the carb which means that the throttle must
be in the closed position when starting from cold.

"experiencing great difficulties in getting it started on these cold days"
As mentioned make sure throttle is closed complete.
Chances are "Carb Snot" is culprit.
Search Archives for "Carb Snot":
http://www.sarangan.org/europa_forum/2005-10/index.html
True choke is not a traditional choke, but an enriching circuit. When
float bowl is removed on my BMW R-100GS that uses type 64 carbs, the jet
in the bowl would get clogged, sometimes other places in body. On the bike
anyway, I can get lazy. Just run it till it will not start in cold, and
take off elbow between 1 carb and airbox and hand choke it to get running
in a pinch. It will start on 1 cylinder (it is a 2 cyl bike) and in not
too long other side fires. Then when get home just do a carb maintain.
If a 914 best to have bottom ring gaskets on hand and on all have new
float bowl gaskets on hand.
I will grin tonight thinking of you hand choking behind a big fan in the
cold ;-)
Go over your carbs, get schamatic and chase circuit. Since your carbs will
be off, make sure you incorporate the latest greatest pseudo AD (fo UL) on
the type 64 float pivot mod:
http://www.rotax-owner.com/sdocs.htm search under service bulletins for
your motor
This is for the old sty;e pivot that can flake off plating and do no good.
