The Skydrive Carb Heater kit is a PFA approved mod approved "All of Type".
PFA have approved it at least twice under the numbers 10424 and 10951 (well
it gives them something to do).
In October I put in the application to convert it to a "Standard" mod (with
improved documentation) and received the reply that this "will be considered
over the winter".
If you need a copy of the documentation let me know

Don't they work quickly ! NOT !
Did you make any progress on the water thermostat ? I see
that Franz in Germany (Rotax dealers) actually have a
water thermostat advertised on their web-site.
www.franz-aircraft.de (sorry in German but it is easy to
navigate !)
(The Mocal oil thermostat is already a PFA approved mod
for "All of type" and will be going on in the early New Year).

Is there anything to apply for? I'm sure I'll get shot down in flames but the way
that I (and my inspector) read the PFA document on the use of 'Approved for
all types' (TL3.07) document, the PFA don't need to be involved (though you need
to record it in your permit next permit application)
You just complete the PFA form SF9 from their website, fit the carb heat kit, get
your inspector to sign the form and 'retain the completed form with the aircraft
documentation' (as it says on the form). And note the fitting in the engine
log book.
I included the fitting of the Mod in my very recent permit application together
with a copy of the SF9 - permit was back within about 3 days.

Ian was trying to get the mod "upgraded" from "approved
for all types" to "a standard mod". Both allow the SF9
route as you describe, but the "approved for all types"
were authorised earlier so the documentation is not
necessarily so good.
So the only difference would be that the documentation
would be "better" :-)

Ps I cringed when I addressed the pressing on of the carb
heater (100 each) onto a carb (400 each ?) that I
chickened out and sent the whole lot back to SkyDrive to
do. The best 20 insurance premium I have ever paid ! So
much easier to do when you have done 100 previously - you
know how mcuh to file off and how hard you can squeeze (or
hit with a hammer !)

Gosh isn't the modern world wonderful..!
Please accept with no obligation, implicit or explicit, my best wishes
for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress,
non-addictive, gender neutral celebration of the winter solstice
holiday, practised within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious
persuasion or secular practices of your choice, with total respect for
the religious/secular persuasions and/or traditions of others, and their
choice not to practise religious or secular traditions at all... and a
fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated
recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2006,
but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other
cultures whose contributions to society have helped make Britain great
(not to imply the Britain is necessarily greater than any other country
nor is it the only "BRITAIN" in the northern hemisphere), and without
regard to the race, creed, colour, age, physical ability, religious
faith, sexual orientation and choice of computer platform of the wishee.
By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms. This greeting
is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable
with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by
the wishee actually to implement any of the wishes for her/himself or
others, and is void where prohibited by law and is revocable at the sole
discretion of the wisher.
This wish is warranted to perform as expected within the usual
application of good tidings for a period of one year, or until the
issuance of a subsequent holiday greeting, whichever comes first, and
warranty is limited to replacement of this wish or issuance of a new
wish at the sole discretion of the wisher.
Merry Christmas to everyone

Things could always be worse, here in the great white north I'm now in my
4th month waiting for Transport Canada to get their heads around the
Skydrive system. So far the only progress I've made is the suggestion that
it has moved from being not acceptable to not recommended.
At this point in time any response from TC, in either official language,
would be welcomed, even if it was just telling me to get lost.
Bob's reports on late model kits regularly departing from Zephyrhills
makes me feel most envious ( and a bit sheepish over my slow progress).
I'm a bit out of touch on my English vernacular, William's " putting up a
shelf" means?

Richard,
Do you have details of this approved Mod and the particular model of
thermostat approved.
I spoke to Francis Donaldson earlier in the year about the introduction of
an oil thermostat, he wasn't too encouraging, so I gave up the idea as I
have wasted too many heartbeats trying to overcome the PFA Mod Scheme red
tape.
Perhaps he had a change of heart.

When preparing to install the GA 02 plates, do you cut away the entire top flange
of the close out to allow the GA02 to slide in, or do you attempt to cut a
slot at the in the flange of the close out and twist GA 02 into place? (I have
issue 2 page 7-6 of the manual. Looks like one would cut the flange shown in
Fig 13).
BTW, this same page refers to removing a large part of the leading edge to provide
clearance for the aileron push rod. No where in my manual is the further
mention of the installation of the aileron push rod. Can someone refer me to
a source of this information? I downloaded the MG manual from the Europa US website.
No manual came with my MG kit.
Thanks

Hi! Mike.
If the Swiss Rally is the same weekend as the PFA I'm pleased it's a
case of "no contest," it will be Switzerland for me but what's that to
do with Barkaby and the Swedish event?
I still have to tick Hungary and Romania off my list, now if those would
fit into the week between Barkaby and the Danish Stauning ......but I
also have relatives in Gualivare now (North Sweden)and an invite to a
new mid Summer Finish camp fire event( with BBQ Reindeer)...... That
still leaves the Swiss trip which would be probably better combined with
the Hungary and Romania visit except I will have to coincide a visit to
Straubing for a quick MT Propeller overhaul and the beer festival!
What say you P2 Ivor? Or will G-IVOR be up and running by then?
It really is so difficult to decide on these matters !
Regards
And Best wishes to all over the festive season.

This is typical of the PFA. The oil thermostat mod was
approved "for all aircraft of this type" on 26 Feb 1999.
Yes really ! Donaldson gave me all that brush off as well,
as did Beale. Not quite true they gave slight pointers but
didn't actually mention the PFA/Europa type mod. Beale did
tell me about the aircraft he built with the mod (G-MIKI)
which he used without ANY mod from the PFA (Just a "by the
way I have put this on" note with the original permit
application !)
It uses a Mocal OT/1 thermostat which has to have its
connection pipes bored out to 10 mm. It can be done ! The
thermostat is available from Think Auto for about 23 plus
VAT but I got mine from Avonbar at Takeley near Stansted
for 14.95 plus VAT (less 5% for on-line). I collected it
! Less than 10 miles away.
Phone the PFA office and ask the girl there in the
Engineering Section for details of mod 10179 and a form SF9.
Or just ask for the details. The form is available on the
web-site.
There are also two lists on the web site
TL 3.06 which is some guff and a list of "Standard Mods"
TL 3.07 which is some more (similar) guff and a list of
mods "approved for all of type".
Read, I won't say "enjoy" !
Under the scheme, approved for all of type, you can
install, have it inspected by your PFA inspector and then
fill in the form SF9 and sent it to the PFA. No money, no
nothing ! No red tape there once you have cut through the
cr*p and got the information in the first instance.
I would recommend that EVERYBODY list off TL 3.06 and TL
3.07. At least 1/3 of each list is for Europas. The
remainder is for another 15 or so PFA types ! Europas are
prodigious here - and there are more of them !
To be fair to the PFA the information is now available on
the web-site and it can easily be acessed. Donaldson
couldn't be expected to remember all of them, although he
could perhaps have looked it up !
All we need now is a similar approved mod for a water
thermostat (it is available from Franz in Germany) and
Europas will run at 80 - 85 indicated water and oil in all
conditions. A ramp can be built in the lower cowling to
redirect all the air through the coolers and the
thermostats will control the amount of fluids going
through the coolers and thus the amount of cooling
applied. Note I say "indicated' as the temp sensor for the
oil is AFTER the cooler and the actual temperature in the
oil tank will be more. But of course you need the oil to
reach 100 degrees for a bit sometimes to boil off any
water. Job done :-)

Actually, that whole message is called POLITICALLY CORRECT and, although it can

Oh and by the way is it OK to mount an ELT upside down as long as it's
headed in the right direction?
Couldn't find anything in the installation manual that says not to, but
I thought I'd ask people smarter in these ways than me. I would like to
mount it under the rear starboard baggage area access panel.
Thanks,

Why is it that these days we are discouraged from calling it Christmas, but
God forbid we should call Diwali, etc. anything other than Diwali, etc.?
Sorry, but it does my head in!
Anyway, it's a pagan festival really. Jesus was born in the spring.
(Anyone who wants to do holier-than-thou over my political incorrectness is
respectfully requested to bear in mind how the angel is attached to the

Richard,
Thanks for all that. A fresh task when the weather picks up a little.
Incidentally, what I didn't mention was that I also spoke to Nigel Beale,
who was no help at all.
I really despair with some of these people.

Do I understand right? The aircraft was flown without any filling,
profiling and painting? So the control surfaces are just raw glass as
laid-up?
If my understanding is correct I find this very surprising. How did
he get it signed off for flight? Not only are the aerodynamics
compromised with macro & micro roughness on the surfaces, but they
are not protected at all from UV damage. Also, if the ailerons have
been balanced for flight in this condition (and for safety they
should have been), they will need re-balancing after filling,
profiling & painting. I hope Richard intends to get the surfaces
finished and UV-protected as soon as possible.

Rowland

Ok, Ok, I don't want to open a controverters.
It appears easy to me to refex the flaps on a mono permanently and therefore
decrease the flap down angle by the same amount by moving the pivot point of
the flap back about a small amount. This would be a simple matter but if
one changed the angle by say, 5degrees, would the landing takeoff suffer
enough that one would not benefit by greater cruise?
Duane? Others?
