Jim et al, All internal combustion engines will spit out a certain amount of oil in tiny droplets. Try holding a bit of white paper behiond your car exhaust!. As the rotax exhaust does not extend to the rear of the a/c but spits its bits on to the nice clean white cowling - coupled with the slipstream effect from forward motion and prop, you are bound to get the effect you mention. I too have something similar with my 914 but it does not worry me. Patrick

--> Europa-List message posted by: "Steve Hagar" <hagargs@earthlink.net> Craig: I had first started up my 914 awhile ago and had the same issue with the oil. Servicing was to the proper level. It has been started seveal times in the driveway now and the excess oil was only observed during the first two startups. Note however that I have been checking oil level on successive startups by rotating the prop until the oil is returned fully to the tank ( about 12 prop turns). That may have something to do with the lack of oil blowing out. Mostly small black spray spots. Is this normal?" Yes. When the engine has sat for some time oil weeps past the check valve on top of the turbo and into both halves (combustion air side / exhaust side) of the turbo. Upon engine start the oil is picked up by the exhaust gases and then spews out of the exhaust system onto the aircraft. I got some more Ampreg 20 ( we cannot use the new 22) in November from Marineware Ltd Southampton. Call Tim on 023 8033 0208 He only had the slow hardener unfortunatly. Cost 80.07 inc post and vat. --> Europa-List message posted by: "Steve Hagar" <hagargs@earthlink.net> Depending on how your material has been stored it may be very well acceptable even though it is out of date. Make a lap shear test coupon out of fiberglass layups of the same thickness or strength you are going to use the resin on the aircraft and do a pull test. If the fiberglass breaks before the bond you can reasonably be assured that your adhesive is still suitable. From: "R\351mi Guerner" <ai... --> Europa-List message posted by: "Rmi Guerner" <air.guerner@wanadoo.fr> Craig Ellison wrote =E2=80=9D I was unable to get the oil temp up in the green before the CHT went into the yellow and had to shut down. Aprox time .25hr/OAT 45F. Also when done there was oil from the exhaust down the port side of the aircraft. Mostly small black spray spots. Is this normal?=E2=80=9D Craig, Cooling is a recurrent problem with the Rotax / Europa cowl combination. On the ground the coolant warms up a lot faster than the oil, and the coolant can boil over if you cannot take off quickly . In flight there is too much cooling especially in winter. The possible fixes are: cowl flaps, thermostatic valves, Evans coolant. The Evans coolant definitely solves the boil over issue. I have tested different cowl flap solutions and am still working to improve them. Regarding the black spray spots on the port side of the aircraft, coming out of the exhaust stack: I got just that when I was using the 914 and I was concerned about it. Now I am using a new 912S and I am still getting some black deposits. I believe this comes from a too rich mixture on some cylinders. However, as it seems that some cylinders are running a lot leaner than the others, I believe it would be very risky to adjust the carbs to a leaner average mixture. This is a weakness of the Rotaxes and I think we have to live with it. Remi Guerner F-PGKL, XS S/N395 monowheel, 288 hours on a 914 + 89 hours since upgrade to the 912S.

--> Europa-List message posted by: "karelvranken" <karelvranken@hotmail.com> Craig, I am sorry for you that I can't answer your questions because I have the same problem even if it is with a 912ULS. Not about the oil drops. Therefore was sufficient reply. I mean the CHT that is too high when the aircraft is turning in stationary position. Evans coolant may be a salve on the wound but is not realy controlling the temperature even when it is not overboiling anymore. Honestly I think this is due to bad cowling design. I hope that Cliff Shaw will react on this mail because he was perhaps the first to redesign the cowling together with the location of the radiators. What have all those flying found for solution? Best wishes for happy landings in 2006 to all of you on the list. Meaning should you have a batch that is faulty or fails on you prior to the exp date they will respond." I have tested like specimens made in syringes for insulin injecting and found little deterioration in breading strength and recently made a test piece of A420 purchased with my kit in 1997. I bonded two pieces of aluminium strip about 1" square at 90 degrees, warmed to about 80 deg C for 4 hrs and could not break it in shear while holding one arm in a vice and pulling upward with my hand(s) at about 8-9 inches from the the corner. I concluded it would be suitable to join my fuselage halves when I bond the top on soon. --> Europa-List message posted by: "Paul McAllister" <paul.mcallister@qia.net> Mike, Well to be honest I thought you did mean an electric ASI. If you want a digital device in 2.25, then Stratomaster make a line of instruments. The US representative is http://www.aerialadventure.net/ For a mechincal device try a "Winter" They are made for sailplanes. They are non linear so the resolution at low air speeds (where you really care) is very good. I have one in 3.25 and I like it lot. Take a look at http://store.williamssoaring.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Co de=WSP&Product_Code=01ASI57160W Winder also does a really nice 3 pointer Altimeter in 2.25, but it is very expensive. Regards, Paul

    Subject: Fuel Filler hose
--> Europa-List message posted by: "Peter Rees" <peter.rees05@ntlworld.com> I seem to recall that someone had devised an aluminium replacement for the classic filler hose which Europa can no longer supply - Can anyone shed any light on this? I guess the only alternative (other than Europas suggestion to install the XS filler) is to build a filler from parts from a 'boy racer' car shop. Happy new year to everyone on the forum and thanks to everyone for their help over the last year.

Subject: 914 fuel return plumbing options...???
--> Europa-List message posted by: D Wysong <hdwysong@gmail.com> I saw Erich Trombley's name and remembered that I had a question you folks regarding fuel return plumbing/routing for the 914... Erich, is it true that you plumbed your 914 fuel return to a "T" fitting inserted upstream of the fuel pumps? Did it work? Still working? Any pics? Any comments/gripes/griefs/recommendations associated with such a setup? Any feedback from the rest of you that ride around behind a 914 is welcomed, too. Thanks!! Subject: Re: ROTAX CHT + oil temp
--> Europa-List message posted by: "Cliff Shaw" <flyinggpa@comcast.net> All I see that Karel brought my name into this discussion. Thank :) . I did make changes to the XS lower cowling that helped in cooling . I will have to post some pictures of the work in an album. (not right now, too busy at Galaxy Hobby) What I did was to contour the inside of the large air scoop so there was a smooth flow for the air. I relocated the oil cooler so it got a direct shot of air and that air exited over the muffler and helped to cool it a bit. There are other changes I did in this aria that were not done for cooling, so when you look at my pictures your will see a mod to the muffler and new exhaust exit portals on the cowling. Come to think of it, those exit ports would help a lot ! :) I will try to get an album put together this Sunday. PS: Evens does not make the Rotax run cooler. Quit the opposite, it runs hotter. Water is the best heat transfer fluid. BUT, Evens will not boil over !!!!! Happy New Year ! Cliff Shaw 1041 Euclid ave. Edmonds, WA 98020 425 776 5555 http://www.europaowners.org/WileE
