Hi All,
I know that most have put some sort of rudder trim tab in place. My
questions are these. Should I put a couple of nut plates into the rudder
before I complete the filling and sanding of it? Which side is preferred?
How far up from the bottom? How big should it be? I am envisioning an
aluminum piece that will be bent to adjust later. Probably not as elegant as
it could be if molded in but you can't predict the angle needed in the
future. What to do???

Yes, you read right. Colditz in the former East Germany, home of the
infamous Colditz Castle, World War 2 PoW camp for the Prominenter
(high-profile prisoners) and the Deutchfeindlich ('bad-boys' of the
incarcerated Allied forces).
We're organising a Club trip to visit the Castle. To make this even more
enticing, we're taking Garsham Robertson, Colditz expert and tour guide with
us. There are never any guarantees, but it is possible that Garsh may be
able to get us into parts of the castle one does not normally get to see (in
the past this has included the attic where the glider was built, Douglas
Bader's room, the theatre, the corridor over the gate to the guardhouse, and
the chapel with the famous French tunnel (but not the tunnel itself)).
Dates will be Friday 19th through Monday 21st/Tuesday 22nd May this year,
and will include a full day at the castle. It will be an event not to be
missed, but numbers will be very limited.
If you are interested in joining the trip, please let me know. Please
indicate if you have your own aircraft and if you will be able to take a
passenger. Places will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis, but
I'm afraid I need to reserve the right to prioritise those able to take a
passenger as not everyone involved in organising this has an airworthy
plane.
If you'd like a 'recommended reading' list before you go, please just let me
know.

When my tri gear was first completed a couple of years ago, it weighed
in at what I thought was a creditable 818 lbs. Since then, as most of
us do I guess, I have played about and added a few extra's such as fire
extinguisher, first aid kit, tool roll, Hi viz jackets etc. each of
which I considered would make no significant difference to the W&B
calcs. Whilst my bird is at home at present, and I have just replaced
the tailplane torque tube pins and fitted new tyres, I decided to check
the weight again. I have put on 45lbs! Now two up, with full fuel, I
can carry three whole pounds of baggage before becoming overweight. I
guess I need to go on a diet!

Alan,
The plan is a couple of days in the area. So one day out, one in Colditz,
one in either Dresden or Leipzig (I vote Dresden, they have some superb
steam trains :-), plus I want to see inside the Fraukirsche), and one back.
Cheers,

For those of you with an interest in "things Colditz", you may be interested
to know that the RAF officer responsible for the design and build of the
famous Colditz glider is alive and still very active - despite being well
into his nineties.
Though his flying days are well past, this absolutely charming man spends
his days painstakingly building a self designed single-seat plywood
amphibian in the hangar at Old Sarum. He has recently started covering the
flying surfaces in the same blue gingham cloth that his famous glider
sported. If ever there was an example of dogged determination - this must be
it and he is an inspiration to any kit builder that feels he is losing the
will to continue.
Those (UK based) DOTHers visiting Old Sarum might like to wander in to
admire his work and have a chat.

Hi Troy,
Best bet is to wait 'n see if you actually need one....if you do, then tape
a piece of alloy on, somewhere near the bottom, with Gaffer / Race / Duct
tape, [ call it what you will.....]tweaking between test flights, until you have
the required effect.
Then remove it, paint to match, and stick it onto the painted surface with 5
minute epoxy....which is plenty strong enough for the job, but when some
Muppet walks into it / tugs it to see how firmly attached it is / pushes the
plane around the hanger with it...... it will come off without hurting the
rudder !
Cheers,
Nev.

Hi Cliff,
We are thinking long and hard about in flight adjustable trim
tab, due to the effect of pilot / passenger combinations, but PFA approval
will probably can that idea.
With regard to temps, with the engine on cold oil it feels much harsher and
oil pressure drops, so we are working hard to fix the issue, but I was
interested to see other angles of thought !

Paul,
The stall is extremely benign and the aircraft does absolutely
nothing it
shouldn't, as confirmed by our test pilot (was CAA chief test pilot at the
time I think) and John Brownlow who did our conversions, vastly experienced
on type, so no clues their !!

Bryan Thanks for the comments, interesting autopilot you have !
You are quite correct, when we dial out the wing drop with a trim tab you
need to apply right rudder (just a touch) and the situation is extremely
dependant on pilot / passenger ratio.
However all the trim tabs and a touch of rudder decays all the efficiency we
have tried to obtain !!

As it happens, last weekend I weighed an aircraft using digital load pads
loaned by a certain UK-based microlight association. They came with a
current certificate of calibration, traceable to National Standards and
issued by an ISO9000/1-accredited company.
The scales underread by 7%. Either that or the half stone I'd put on over
Xmas has suddenly vanished.
However, the second load cell in the set seemed to give credible results.
Can't trust anyone!

After fitting the door and front screens with a 1mm gap in the rebate,
do we then leave the gap or have folk filled it with filler?

Thanks Tony, At last, I feel fulfilled in life!
Don't worry about the efficiency aspect, it is minimal (if you are not too
obsessive).
Cheers Bryan

Richard - my records show 805 lbs at first flight - but maybe that
was before _other_ vital items were fitted. I'll change it to 863
now. Any advance on the 130 hours flown in late 2004?

Tony,
There are at least two PFA approved trim-tab installations in the UK - Mike
Parkin has a cut-out tab and is flying, I have a hinge-type tab behind the
aileron TE but am not flying yet.
They're not 'all of type', but they may help you get your own approval
through.

Hi Cliff,
We are thinking long and hard about in flight adjustable trim
tab, due to the effect of pilot / passenger combinations, but PFA approval
will probably can that idea.
With regard to temps, with the engine on cold oil it feels much harsher and
oil pressure drops, so we are working hard to fix the issue, but I was
interested to see other angles of thought !

aileron. It is adjustable from the cockpit and is very useful. Pictures are
included at europaowners.org . Your low temperature would be normal for
my Rotax. I am not worried about it. Much better than to hot !

Subject: | All New BBS Interface For Matronics List Forums! |
--> Europa-List message posted by: Matt Dralle <dralle@matronics.com>
Dear Listers,
I'm very proud to announce a completely new BBS interface is now available for
all of the Email Lists at Matronics! This is a full-featured system that allows
for viewing, posting, attachments, polls - the works.
But the best part is that it is *completely* integrated with all of the existing
email tools currently available at Matronics! What this means at the most basic
level is that, if you post a message to List from Email in the traditional
way, it will show up on the BBS system *and* get distributed to everyone currently
subscribed to the Email List. By the same token, if you are on the BBS
and post a message to a given List-Forum, the message will not only show up on
the BBS, but also be distributed to everyone on the Email List!!
It is really a very nice implementation and I am very pleased with its operation.
All of the tools you have come to know and love such as the List Search Engine
and List Browse and Download will still be available and contain all of the
latest posts. Think of the new BBS interface as just another method of accessing
the all of the Lists.
You can use the BBS to view all of the latest posts without having to do anything
except use your browser to surf over to the site. You can view and look at
all of the various List's posts. If you want to post a new message or reply
to an existing message from the BBS, you will have to Register on the BBS. This
is a *very* simple process and will only take a couple of minutes. There is
a small icon in the upper righthand side of the main BBS page labeled "Register"
to get you started.
I strongly recommend that you use the exact *same* email address you are subscribed
to the Email Lists with when registering on the BBS. Also, while not an
absolute requirement, I would really appreciate it if people would use their full
name when choosing their Username on the BBS (for example "Matt Dralle").
This just makes it easier for everyone to know who's posting. Also, I have enabled
the ability to upload a small user picture with your profile called an
"avatar". Please use a *real* picture of yourself *with* your cloths on! Thank
you! Maximum size of the bitmap is 120x120.
You can either be subscribed to the BBS, or any number of Email Lists, or both.
Registering on the BBS will allow you to email directly to all of the various
Lists. However, to receive direct List Email, you will need to be *subscribed*
to the various Lists as you have in the past. No changes here in operation.
I have added numerous links on the BBS pointing to the Email List subscription
page.
I've had the BBS connected to the Lists for about a week now, so its already loaded
up with a fair number of messages. You can post photos and other documents
directly to the BBS and links to them will appear in the List Email distributions.
Also, when any messages posted to the BBS are viewed in the List Email
distribution, there will be a URL link at the bottom of the message pointing
back to the BBS.
And here's what you've been waiting for -- the main URL for the new Matronics Email
List BBS is:
http://forums.matronics.com
Please surf on over, Register, and have a great time! I think this will be the
dawn of a whole new era for the Lists at Matronics!
Best regards,
Matt Dralle

This is a test post to see what happens when I post on MatronicsForum shadowed
by the Listserver imported to EuropaOwners.
Hopefully the internet won't imploded in a ball of cold fusion. [Shocked]
Just to poke the bear with a pointy stick, I think I'll add an attachment...
Hopefully this will all work out.

Paul:
I filled all gaps. Prior to installing the screens I beveled all the
edges in the airstream as they are proud of the window frames. The
filler then tapered up nicely to the profile of the window. Per
suggestion of the Phoenix composits guys the interface between the plexi
and the fiberglass door frame was covered with 2 layers of the lightest
fiberglass cloth available. They noted that this prevents the appearance
of a small crack in the paint at this interface after extended time in
service.
