Post Script to previous mesasge. Just received my fuel drain mod from

When my tri gear was first completed a couple of years ago, it weighed
in at what I thought was a creditable 818 lbs. Since then, as most of
us do I guess, I have played about and added a few extra's such as fire
extinguisher, first aid kit, tool roll, Hi viz jackets etc. each of
which I considered would make no significant difference to the W&B
calcs. Whilst my bird is at home at present, and I have just replaced
the tailplane torque tube pins and fitted new tyres, I decided to check
the weight again. I have put on 45lbs! Now two up, with full fuel, I
can carry three whole pounds of baggage before becoming overweight. I
guess I need to go on a diet!

Yes, you read right. Colditz in the former East Germany, home of the
infamous Colditz Castle, World War 2 PoW camp for the Prominenter
(high-profile prisoners) and the Deutchfeindlich ('bad-boys' of the
incarcerated Allied forces).
We're organising a Club trip to visit the Castle. To make this even more
enticing, we're taking Garsham Robertson, Colditz expert and tour guide with
us. There are never any guarantees, but it is possible that Garsh may be
able to get us into parts of the castle one does not normally get to see (in
the past this has included the attic where the glider was built, Douglas
Bader's room, the theatre, the corridor over the gate to the guardhouse, and
the chapel with the famous French tunnel (but not the tunnel itself)).
Dates will be Friday 19th through Monday 21st/Tuesday 22nd May this year,
and will include a full day at the castle. It will be an event not to be
missed, but numbers will be very limited.
If you are interested in joining the trip, please let me know. Please
indicate if you have your own aircraft and if you will be able to take a
passenger. Places will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis, but
I'm afraid I need to reserve the right to prioritise those able to take a

Steve,
Do mean that (per Phoenix composites) you wet out and apply two layers of
"the lightest
fiberglass cloth available" and then, while still wet, set in the plexi? Or
am I getting this wrong? And this prevents a crack in the paint from developing
at the joint between the paint and the plexi?
Just looking for clarification.
I was getting close to doing this when I read your post.
Also, did you paint your doors before installing the plexi?

Mike,
Don't paint anything until everything is done. Install the plexi as per
instructions. I filled in the gaps with quick-cell. Some have laid up
a 2 inch tape of bid around the windshield at this point, but I did
not. Then continue filling to sand smooth later, so the transition from
glass to fuselage is even. I used PVC tape on the plexi all the way
around the edges to protect it from the quick cell and later from
sanding. Then re-taped it for priming and painting. When it's done the
paint ends where the tape was and creates a perfect edge.

I would like to replace the main tires of my Trigear with smaller ones. Was wondering
whether the same size tires as the nosewheel uses can be installed on the
mains, too ?
(I need the additional clearance for an enlarged prop - and would not mind the
less drag).
Anybody has a suggestion where to obtain fairings for those smaller tires then
?
be well,

I was reading on a Flight test of a Diamond HK 36 Super Dimona with a Rotax 914.
Literature states a 27 to 1 L/D
Article says it can tow a 1323 pound glider provided you keep gross weight of Diamond
below 1587 pounds.
If anyone wants, I can E-Mail you a 3 Meg PDF with article.

Have you thought of putting a larger tyre (tire) on the
front instead ! Same effect !
Only one tyre to buy !
Also smaller main wheels might be a problem on grass
surfaces !

The nosewheel fork will not accomadate a larger tyre, but smaller ones [
same size as nosewheel] will fit on the main gear, [ with smaller tubes, of
course] This was standard fit on the pre XS Trigear.
Long grass / soft ground will create more rolling resistance with the
smaller tyres.
Cheers,
Nev.

This is slightly off topic- just finished the conversion from mono wheel to tri
gear and have the Matco wheels/brakes. Anyone know the tire size for the front
and mains? Thanks

Have you thought of putting a larger tyre (tire) on the
front instead ! Same effect !
Only one tyre to buy !
Also smaller main wheels might be a problem on grass
surfaces !

Not looking at the plane or the book, but I believe they are listed as
500-5 for the mains and 400-11(?) for the nose...

Attention Paul Boulet.
Further to Ivors message below :- Your main gear wheels could be either
4" or 5" depending on the wheel centres you have been delivered or
specified. At least when I was supplied my conversion kit I was given
the option of 4" the same as the nose gear or 5" depending if I would be
using soft grass air strips or not ?
Better look what wheel centres you have ? and or check with Europa .
Regards
Bob Harrison G-PTAG Europa MKI/Jabiru 3300 c/w 5" main gear wheels.

Mike,
Once you get the glass bonded in then apply 2 layers of light weight glass
over the seam. It only has to be about 1 inch wide to cover the joint
between the glass and fuselage or your paint will eventually crack due to
dissimilar materials.

Steve,
Do mean that (per Phoenix composites) you wet out and apply two layers of
"the lightest
fiberglass cloth available" and then, while still wet, set in the plexi? Or
am I getting this wrong? And this prevents a crack in the paint from
developing
at the joint between the paint and the plexi?
Just looking for clarification.
I was getting close to doing this when I read your post.
Also, did you paint your doors before installing the plexi?

In the photo gallery Jos Wrote:
"First filling. Some advice: First sand the gloss off. Then apply epoxy as thin
as possible. Then mix resin in a small bucket. We used 400 gram batches at a
time. Add 3 handfulls of expancel. Mix, first with a solid stick, then use your
hands and hit it until it is a nice thick dough. Apply thick enough to cover
the highest tops, and as evenly as possible. If it shines it was too wet. If
it comes up after the knife, it may be to dry. Too wet makes it hard to sand and
it is heavy on the plane."
This paragraph made my life very easy, and I had a great laugh. I don't know what
it was, the temp, humidity, I don't know. But when I put my hands in the bucket
the mix just stuck, fronts, backs, I think it tried to run up my arms.
I couldn't get or touch anything, I had to get new gloves just to clean off the
old ones.
Then I pictured Jos chucking to himself "I wonder if anyone is really going to
stick his hands in this stuff."
Other than a good laugh this procedure worked perfectly.

No the fiberglass was lain up after the bonding is complete, over the
interface between the edge of the lexan and the window frame. Peel ply
over this to get a smoother surface then fill and paint. I believe my
layup strip was only about 3/4" wide.

Thanks for the files from Lockwood. I read a couple and found them very good.
I recommend that every one read all of the articles. There would be fewer questions
and less worried builder if more of us had read all the files.

Hi Ralph,
I'm sure you have that figured out by no on the rivets but I just had the
same problem last night. Needed a couple of TLPD429BS's for the flap control
rod. A/S was indecipherable but Wicks made some sense after I converted
Europa's lingo from mm to in. I always order a few sizes larger and smaller
when it's cheap stuff like that (9 cents).
Anyway, hope your building is coming along. I got my engine today so I'm
stoked again. Happy building.

A riveting question for all...
I'm trying to buy some extra rivets from A/C spruce, but am having
problems with the coding. TLPD 435BS is equal to ???? what in Spruce talk?
I'd be happy to purchase them from Europa, but was trying to reduce the
shipping time.
Thanks in advance,

Dan,
Thanks for the info, I will find a Wicks cat and start figure'n ;)
Hung my engine two weeks ago, it really makes it look like some progress
is taking place. And, I really did need a booster.
Still working on getting the angles set. BTW, don't hang the oil can
until you've got the air box in place ;). I really must read further ahead.
Good to hear from you.
