After 200 hours, mine was found to be under reading by 300 rpm, which meant I had been taking off regularly at 6,100 without knowing! Fortunately, I never cruised at 5,500. Apparently it is not unusual for Rotax tachos to be out of calibration to that extent. Best wishes, William Thanks for that William. Fortunately, the Airmaster prop controller takes its RPM reading from the prop and constrains the engine according to that reading. Or so I've been told. So far (at 150hrs) the tach coincides with the factory set numbers (5700, 5400, 5000) set up in the prop controller. I've also heard that improper adjustment of the ignition/tach pickups can cause errant tach readings... Jeff - N55XS 150 hrs, and now on autopilot... :) BEBERRY@aol.com wrote: > --> Europa-List message posted by: BEBERRY@aol.com > > > > > In a message dated 23/03/2006 07:00:29 GMT Standard Time, > william@wrmills.plus.com writes: > > Hi Patrick and all, > May I suggest you do not rely on the accuracy of the Rotax tachometer. > After 200 hours, mine was found to be under reading by 300 rpm, which meant > I had been taking off regularly at 6,100 without knowing! Thanks. If you are not planning on operating out of very short strips there are no problems with the 912S/fixed pitch combo. You will have plenty of power, and you will not have the cost, weight, and maintainance issues to worry about. You can set the pitch to give optimum cruise performance, and your wife will be able to bring lots more hair driers and things on trips. Try it first. Go to variable pitch if you have to! Or so I've been told. That's correct. There is a rotational sensor built into the Airmaster prop and that is used to provide feedback to the the prop speed controller. Karl My MT CS 3 blade Prop has a diameter of 157cm (61.81") and the pitch of 106mm. However I believe a) the spinner diameter is impeding my ram air cooling and b)I believe that the climb and cruise capability is restricted by the propeller limit of 3,000RPM. TBO is coming up and I'm thinking of trying a bog standard Sensenitch or GT. I see that OSLD has an Arplast of 66". And BVJN has a Hoffmann, but the diameter is not clear (maybe 1700mm). Then there is Bob H's MT of unspecified diameter. Going down the list of other 9xx powered aircraft I see that Ikarus and Zenair have primarily 68" props. I wonder if they have more ground clearance than the Europa. do not archive >From: "Duncan McFadyean" >To: >Subject: Re: Europa-List: Propeller length >Date: Mon, 20 Mar 2006 23:05:51 -0000 > >--> Europa-List message posted by: "Duncan McFadyean" > > >See: >http://www.pfa.org.uk/Engineering%20pdfs/Mods%20and%20Repairs/TL%203.12 %20ENGINES%20AND%20PROPELLER%20FITTED%20TO%20PFA%20AIRCRAFT.pdf >page 14 et seq. > >Numerous props at 64" dia. >65" seems to be the largest. > >Duncan McF. >----- Original Message ----- >From: "KARL HEINDL" >To: >Sent: Monday, March 20, 2006 8:44 PM >Subject: Europa-List: Propeller length > > > > --> Europa-List message posted by: "KARL HEINDL" > > > > > > Is anyone out there using longer propeller blades than the standard 62" >WD > > on a trigear ? > > What is a safe limit, assuming the safety wire on the nose wheel > > suspension > > is adjusted if necessary, and assuming that the possibly soft bungee is > > replaced with the steel springs ? > > > > Cheers, Karl
