Thanks for the offer of assistance at FFF. Details of your move noted.
I want to have a talk with you regarding one of the projects I may take
on over the winter.
Terry Clark (G-IRON) is very unhappy with his high top. The visibility
forward is very poor due to a very distorted screen (E(2004) have
provided a replacement screen) but it has not been fitted.
The present idea, discussed with Andy (in his Europa days), is to lower
the cowl and top of firewall to the original height. Blend this in to
the hightop fuse top and add a new deeper screen. See attached drawing.
The composite work looks as if it will work out well but I know nothing
of the complications of getting a new screen made.
I think we might get away with an existing screen if the existing
curvature is continued to the edge of the blank and we can get at least
1.8 inches of additional material out of the blank. From what I
remember of my screen there was very nearly this much spare.
If we do need a new mould what exactly would be needed?

Hi Ian
I could do a shift for the Europa stand on Saturday or Sunday.

First my thanks to those of you who have volunteered already after Dave
Bosomworth's note. The name I have are Brian Fogg, Rick Wood, Robert
Shaw so they do not need to reply again. If you think you volunteered
but I did not get the message please let me know.
It's that time of year again and I am begging for assistance as usual.
The PFA are pushing me to provide the names of those to receive free
tickets in the next week so I have to get my act together.
As last year we have been asked to organise the Composite Demonstration
area and assist with the joint Factory Club tent.
EUROPA(2004)/ CLUB STAND
We expect the Europa (2004) and Club stand to be a single open area
(rather like last year). The Club would like to provide THREE people
for the period from 11.00 to 17.00 Friday and Saturday and from 11.00 to
16.00 Sunday. So proposed shift are 11.00 - 14.00 and 14.00 - 17.00
(16.00 on Sunday). Your task will be to "muck in" with the Committee
members to talk to Club members and with the Europa staff present to
talk to potential customers.
COMPOSITE CONSTRUCTION DEMONSTRATION AREA
Various experts will be around to help with really tricky questions so
you do not need to be an expert but we need are two people at a time to
man the stand. So why not do it with a co-builder (or friend if you
still have any). If you cannot persuade a friend I will be happy to
pair you up with some other suitably insane aircraft builder. The
proposed slot are 11.00 to 14.00 and 14.00 to 17.00 (16.00 on Sunday) on
each of the three days (but we will try to arrange things to fit your
attendance).
The task will be to talk to those who visit the stand, answer questions
and to demonstrate working in composites. We are not expecting you to
be give a lecture on the subject just to talk to those attending about
you experience. We will provide some example pieces in various states of
construction and we expect to have a composite fuselage (probably a
Bambi) that you can show visitors round. We will have available
suitable moulds to make small items (exactly what has yet to be
decided). Please let me know if you want to make something specific.
This is a perfect opportunity for those of you who want to make
something small but are deterred by having to buy new epoxy, glass etc.
You do not have to make something specific but all the basis material
and equipment will be to hand. We do suggest you bring your own gloves
(for comfort but we will have disposables available if you forget), face
masks, overalls and any favourite mixing sticks etc.
And now the incentive! I will do my best grovelling for free tickets
from the PFA and I expect to have enough for all who work on the
composite demonstration area. You will get free entry to the Rally (all
days + camping if required) for doing a session. You will get to keep
the beautiful demonstration piece you produce. Volunteers for less
hours will be very welcome but PFA largess will not extend to free
tickets.
If you can help us out, please contact me direct. Please give the hours
you would be prefer to work and your home address (needed so tickets can
be sent to you). I will then try and work out a timetable and contact
all who have volunteered.

I think you may need a new mould.
Graham would be able to confirm, but I think the original screens already
came to the edge of the 'blank' to the extent that the bottom of the screen
was optically distorted (presumably by the excess material cantilevering
beyond the blank).
I sneaked-in an extra 1/2" of depth on the lower edge (by lowering the
firewall and 'squashing' the fus. moulding), but it was effectively of no
use because of the optical distortion on that extra 1/2"!

Paul - I'm sorry to hear that Dennis has died. He was a Europa Club
member. If you are in touch with any of his surviving family, please
pass on to them our condolences, and apologies for any distress
caused because we didn't know in time to cancel the delivery of
Europa Flyer #49.
The last info I had from Dennis at renewal in March was that he was
building kit A252, a standard-wing XS monowheel. There was no engine
or prop info, so I guess he was a fairly long way from flying it.
Hope this helps.
regards
Rowland
