Subject: | First Flight - N245E |
Greetings all,
Just wanted to let everyone know that N245E broke the surly bonds of earth
at 6:05 PM EDT on July 7th at Matthews Field (TN89). The duration was 1:06 and
the flight was uneventful. I spent the better part of the flight circling
the field trying to get the piston rings to seat, although I did take a jaunt
up the valley 10 miles or so once I felt comfortable with the engine. I would
have flown longer, but I found it quite uncomfortable with my seat cushion
removed and using my parachute for padding.
It fly's straight and level hands off and the handling is crisp and
predictable. Minor adjustments in the rudder cables are needed, but other than
that
it is a ball to fly! The Jabiru 3300 performed flawlessly and the airplane
jumped off the ground in about 400' on the turf runway. I didn't really record
any performance numbers, but I will in the next few flights and I'll post them
here. I did run it up to 137 knots once, though, and there was plenty of
throttle left. Ground observers said it was very, very quiet.
Many thanks to all here in the Europa family and special thanks to Andy
Silvester for all his assistance and the fine FWF package he's put together. I
also want to thank Neville for his guidance along the way and Andy Draper and
the Europa factory for their assistance as well. Lastly, I want to thank my
wife Susan for her consistent encouragement and support, not to mention her
patience, over the 3.5 year build. She's chomping at the bit for me to get my
40
hours flown off so she can fly it.
The Europa Permagrin has begun.....

our sprayer has used 2K from this lot who also do primer and colour
in cans. Don't know what the quality of the cans is like. Quick mail
order service as well as local distributers.

Well done John - you've beaten me to it. Although mine has passed its

chosen airfield because of Farnborough Airshow - I cannot believe how
many times I have had to wait during my build.

Hi,
Anyone out there know if it's a bad idea to set the wing incidence before the top
is completely bonded on? I have it secured by clecos and tight straps so it's
in precisely the position it'll be in when bonded on.
Anyone that's flying tried this?
Thanks for the input,
Dan

Either terminal will do just fine as long as they are the aviation
double shank type and properly crimped. I used the screw type because I
had them. according to "Electric Bob" the slip on type work just as
well.

Hi all,
I use plastic wrap as a release film when doing various layups and, of course,
it sticks to the layup and not the piece you're molding it against.
But does anyone know of anything that will easily dissolve the wrap from the layup?
I've been sanding it off but that's messy and time consuming. I just need
a way to make sure it is all removed without harming the layup.
Thanks,
Dan

Yes, I did almost all work before bonding on top and had no problems. I did
not install the fuselage stiffener between door sill and seat until
afterwards.

Congratulations! Feels fast, doesn't it! Since I am also installing the
Jab3300 (just received it), I'm very interested in what your flight figures come
up
to be. Which prop did you decide on?
Also a quick question....what size bolts did you use to mount the Jab
mounting frame to the Europa landing gear frame? Do anything special during your
mounting procedure?

It sounds as if your plastic wrap is too thin. I had used visqueen about
.004" thick. Removal involved getting an edge of a razor under a corner to
lift it and then peeling it off by hand.

Congradulations John!
Sounds like your going to have a fast and I know a very fun bird. Keep
us informed on your test. I think you have a winning combo with the Jab
and new prop you are using. Are you going to OSH by any chance?

Dan,
It may be easier to stop the plastic from sticking in the first place. We
generally coat the film (or clear packing tape) with mold release (bought
from Aircraft Spruce, but it looks pretty much like ordinary paste wax for
cars). The layup comes right off after it's set. The wax residue is easily
cleaned off with solvent, if you need to bond or paint the surface later.
