Hi Nigel,
Certainly sounds right, BMW motorcycles always used Bing Carbs.

We changed ours about 6 months ago - I read an article about how someones
split due to ageing - the split put the carbs way out of balance and it could
have got pretty nasty. Lockwood in the US recommend (from memory) and absolute
maximum service life of 5 years.
I looked around because, as you say, they're really expensive over here -
you can get them cheaper in the US but you can't buy directly as Rotax limit
where dealers are allowed to send good. By the time they've been posted to
a friendly rotax user in the US and then posted on with the risk of the tax
man putting his hand out on the way into the country, it just wasn't worth
it - we just paid skydrive the silly amount of money (about 45gbp each plus
the vat mans share) and they were here next day - really didn't seem worth
lots of effort to save 20 or so.

I think its pretty hard for a fan's brush noise at a couple of kHz to
reach up to the Av band.
Here's another possibility:
Over time your ground connections are oxidizing and increasing
resistance. The noise may well
be due to normal radiation of digital circuit clock and switching. Check
to see if there is a voltage greater
than a few millivolse between both your radio and GPS ground pins to the
main battery negative terminal.
If there is, improve the connections, protect them and add copper to
reduce path resistance.
No oxidizing connections would include FastOns or solder, but ring
terminals often rot.

All attending Osh Kosh,
In case you are interested the Woodcomp Constant Speed Propeller is
exhibiting this year on the SPORTAIR USA LC, Display stands 5 and 12.
This propeller is a very good alternative to the Airmaster and Arplast CSPs
and is commercially very attractive. Several are now flying on UK Europas
with good results and the after-sales service is excellent.
I hope you all enjoy the event.

Cheers,
I am looking at a square cutting on three sides with the usual
crack control drill hole at each end. This +/-2inch cutting carries no
infromation in the manual that I can find - but perhaps I've missed the
reference.
It would appear to permit access to the turbo control area
further back OR provide cooling air to a certain facility.
If you know of its purpose, or have divined same from superior
research - and are able to take a moment to explain - I would appreciate the
knowledge, as am about to finalise the fitting of the engine and its
accessories.
Much obliged in advance,
Ferg Kyle

Ferg,
If you are refering to the bendable flap about 6" down the cooling duct and
on the lefthand side (looking rearwards), It should be bent down into the
airflow to direct air up and around the turbocharger.
The pictures on page 4-4 of the 914 manual(
http://www.europa-aircraft.biz/pdfs/xs914%20may%2006.vp.pdf ) actually show
a 912s hence the lack of the flap. If you look VERY carefully at the
pictures on 4-6 & 4-7 you can just see the flap.
Cheers
Simon

Ferg,
On my 914 the only hole in the turbo box cover is to provide for a 2"
cooling pipe for the voltage control unit. This is not square.

The Rotax manual recommends replacement of all rubber components at 5 years.

Watch Ebay. Someone sells a version of the conectors for $39US. Look
like they are better quality than the much higher priced Rotax part.

Hi Duncan
The lockwood article was pretty strong in its recommendation to change them
at 5 year intervals - especially the older types (like the ones we had)
which don't have the sleeve over the tightening screw to prevent you from
over tightening it. If you do this, it weakens the wall - If this cracks,
you could loose all power from one side of the engine while the other side
is generating full power - sounds like a good way to rip the engine from the
mount and subsequent total loss of control - therefore sounded like 100
well spent as our engine is about 8 years + old and sat most of that time in
unused.
Changing all rubber parts - carb sockets, oil hoses, water hoses and fuel
hoses cost us about 250 - do that every 5 years and you're looking at 1 a
week.
exclusive distribution rights in the UK which can only be good news (except
for skydrive!).
