Do you have any info on the sprag clutch circlip that needs replacing at 1200 hours. I have just had one break at 600 hours and go through the engine which is devastating, far worse than the sprag clutch just wearing out. I emailed Cliff and Betty last week to say I was arriving in town at the weekend and did they want to get together for lunch? Betty told me they'd be off to Oshkosh, and sorry we couldn't meet up, and we had a lovely chat about Liza and my plans for the barn we're converting. I'm sat in my hotel room in Seattle in the wee hours with the usual jetlag, and DaveBuzz just called to let me know the awful news. I have no idea how I'm going to tell Liza - she was desperately fond of Cliff and Betty who were two of the kindest, most generous, most interesting and fundamentally decent people I've ever met. I met them through this Forum, and Liza did likewise when we got engaged over here - when Betty knew perfectly well what was planned for the next day. She enjoyed that little secret enormously. That they took the time and expense to travel to England last year, visit us, and be special guests at our wedding meant so much to us both. The Wile E Coyote was a lovely plane, too, and Cliff and I had a wonderful weekend earlier this year checking out the local volcanos, both dormant and active, from the air in her. She flew beautifully and was a huge credit to Cliff. My trips to Seattle will never be the same. No more looking for opportunities to go over and see them. My heart goes out to Mike and Paul and the rest of their family, who were all so close to them. This is indeed very sad news...I can't find the words... Cliff was always up beat, hi energy, creative problem solver, thoughtful, knowledgeable, and always willing to share his experiences and expertise...the epitome of an aircraft home-builder. My ship will be the better for his innovations and advice. To Bob J.: My most sincere condolences to you and your family as you grapple with the loss of dear friends, your building buddy, and pal. Thank you for volunteering to pass along information on this tragic loss as it becomes available. It looks like it will be a few weeks before a memorial service. The e-mails you are all sending are appreciated and I will save them for the family. Cliff's plane impacted about 500 feet short of runway 27. Preliminary information was a stall-spin. Even though I never had the occasion to meet him, but we mailed each other about small mods to personalise the aircraft. I hope that he is still flying in heaven with Betty on his side. Can you bring over my condolences to the family while I dry my tears? As I went through my day, I often found a lump in my throat and wiping tears away. I met the Shaws here on the forum and we exchanged emails, photos, and ideas. Just the other day my wife said she might have to go to Washington State. Oh good, I said - I have friends there we can visit. All this for two people I've never met, never spoken to. My heart truly goes out to their friends and family. Anyone who knew them on a personal level, must be completely devastated. That=92s how I=92ll remember the best Europa building buddy a guy could want. Cliff Shaw. Wonderful Man. Wonderful generosity of heart. Led a wondrous life that was cut short while doing what he loved to do. Cliff never lost his wonder for life; it was that sense of wonder, that incredible and insatiable curiosity that he left as his legacy to this world-wide group of friends ' many of whom only knew Cliff from his participation on the Europa Builders E-mail list. I only had a handful of face-to-face meetings with Cliff (including a Barbeque at his home co-hosted by his wonderful wife Betty), but like many of you, we shared dozens of e-mails and phone conversations where Cliff was always so willing to share his expertise and his brilliant solutions to vexing problems. Cliff Shaw ' a wonderful guy who put down roots in the Europa Community and cultivated a long list of friends who admired him and cherished him so. He will be missed. I was stunned this morning when I first read Bob Jacobsen's posting. I'm still stunned this evening. Like most of you, I have traded e-mail with Cliff but have never had the opportunity to meet him and his wife. Now I never will. Such a sad time. A couple months ago Richard Collins wrote about the loss of friends to the avocation he and they loved so much. This is the first for me. Via con Dios Cliff and Betty. My most sincere condolences to their family and friends. As I prepare my Europa for its first flight it is a salutary reminder that flying is risky, but their sons reflect that it was a part of Cliff and Betty's life that they shared and enjoyed together. I do not know whether I had met the couple at Sun'n'Fun over the last couple of years but like many in the Europa family I got to know Cliff through his e-mails and contributions to the dissemination of information. They will be missed by many, and I send my family's condolences to his family and all that knew Cliff and Betty. Steve Pitt #403 G-SMDH
